Seashells by the seashore

Photo from here. Will have some of our own to post soon.

Wednesday afternoon we threw the kid and the dogs into the car, plopped The Pogues into the CD player and headed north up the coast. We spent one night in Pismo Beach, and had dinner at the famous Alex B-B-Q, then continued north to Carmel-by-the-sea (yes, that’s the official name) where we’ve planted ourselves for a couple of days before continuing north to the bay area. Carmel is quite lovely, but what I’m enjoying most is the weather: highs in the 60’s F, lows in the 50’s.

  1. Glad you are all in Dog Heaven! Where else can the pooches stop at Tiffany on the way to the leash-free beach, and then end the day sprawled under heaters at an outdoor table while the humans have a fine meal?

  2. So pretty! By the way, any recommendations on where to stay with dog in tow? I have an elderly larger dog who can’t stay at home with a sitter…and she loves the beach (lab).

    Many thanks 🙂

  3. anon – yes, this is the most dog-friendly town I’ve ever encountered!

mater and wendyb – it was sunny when we woke up today, so we may break 70F. 🙂

hollarback – as anon mentioned above, the beach here is leash-free, and many shops, inns and restaurants welcome the pooches. A lot of hotels/motels/inns allow dogs. You can probably check with the Chamber of Commerce or search online. Accommodations nearer to the beach aren’t cheap, but it’s lovely to be able to park the car once when you arrive and walk everyhwere. We’re staying at the Lamp Lighter Inn; I’m going to wander about with my camera today and post more info tomorrow.

  4. Last year my husband, dog and I stayed at the Carmel Garden Court http://www.carmelgardencourtinn.com/rooms.htm
at the top of the hill. Price was reasonable and the room included a fenced front patio, breakfast brought to the door and a kitchenette. If she can walk about 8 scenic blocks to the beach it would be fine. Doris Day’s famous Cypress Inn is pretty too and closer to the beach. Many, many dog friendly inns. Have fun!

  5. Will you go to San Francisco? V. good for clothes and shoes, especially neighborhood boutiques. And there’s a branch of Jigsaw, which I suspect you’d like. I’d finally got the hang of dressing for my life there – chill/fog in July/ August etc – and it was time to move to boiling Texas…
Anyhoo, good to hear you’re all having fun.

  6. I’m so happy the sun has come out for your visit — but I have to confess that my motivations are more selfish — I live next door in Pacific Grove, and it’s been a pretty miserable, cold, foggy summer!
