Traveler’s Little Helpers

As many people asked yesterday about the packing cubes, I’m re-posting this recommendation from September of last year.

Several weeks back, I posted about needing to upgrade our luggage, and that I was considering this Eagle Creek bag, or ultimately, a pair of those bags, as neither mon mari or I could ever be considered light packers. So we purchased the one bag, it’s now been on two trips, and I will indeed be purchasing a second prior to our upcoming Paris/New York trip in October.
But what have really won my heart are the Pack-It® Cubes

and Folders.

These are the real magic of the system. The cubes come in a variety of sizes and are great for organizing any clothes that can be rolled (jeans, t-shirts, knits, underwear, sleepwear). No more scrambling around the night before your trip looking for clean-ish gallon-size Ziploc bags to spare your unmentionables from TSA/Customs riffling!

The folders are for larger items, and any garments that are prone to wrinkle. On this last trip we packed several of mon mari’s cotton button down shirts and slacks according to the easy directions, and even after 24 hours, two flights, and some serious humidity, they emerged from the folder looking as if they’d just been picked up at the laundry. He decided I wasn’t nuts after all.
The cubes and folders are designed to fit the Eagle Creek luggage, but would probably work well with any luggage you already have. Oh, and these are great for bringing home dirty laundry, conveniently compacted to make more room in your luggage for souvenirs!

  1. I use these (mesh zip bags that you wash sweaters in also work well). As baggage restrictions continue to shrink I’m going to have to get even tighter about packing.

  2. Let’s see, I’m trying to expand my vocabulary, but truly: Your little packages and envelopes are “brilliant.”

I’ve never packed well. It must be thrilling to open a suitcase upon arrival and see everything perfectly arranged.

    Bon Voyage & A bientôt

  3. Those would have been handy, sending my son to camp this week. I did roll everything, but he said he didn’t know how he was going to get it all back in the suitcase to come home. So sent him with extra garbage bags just in case, to take the overload.

  4. As much as G and I have traveled in our short marriage thus far, these would have been a Godsend! Seriously, he loves button downs more than anything, but they always end up horribly wrinkled, and who wants to have to iron before getting a bite to eat when they land?

    Thanks for the recommendation!

  5. Brilliant! I am not a great packer and so I need all the help I can get. These seem like a fantastic way to organize what can easily turn into chaos.

  6. Quite clever! Do you know if they come in different colors too? Well, it seems that you are all packed and ready to go. I wish you a very happy vacation in Paris. Sunny, crispy days!

  7. I bought packing cubes from Rick Steves for my 6 weeks sojourn to Europe and etc. They were brilliant. I was really able to stay organized. We also used those “vacuum bags” that you squeeze the air out of for dirty laundry.
