Blame it on (the) Manhattan

Our first night in Las Vegas, we stopped into the Sinatra bar for a cocktail. I decided to try their special Manhattan, which includes among other ingredients, a black tea liqueur. It was fantastic. It was also about three times as much alcohol as I normally drink in one sitting.

Afterward we went wandering through the shops (which howdy-do are open LATE) and bien sur I wanted to stop at the Chanel boutique. I was idly perusing the shoes, when le monsieur pointed to one pair I’d been eyeing and said, “those are nice.” (He’d had a Manhattan too, and has even less alcohol tolerance than I do.) I tried them on, and was surprised and delighted to find them quite comfortable.

Without further ado…

May I present the utterly classic ballet flats. I am so loving these shoes.

And at least I walked out without the jacket. Yes, jacket. It was blue and white classic tweed, cut like a blazer (narrow lapels, nipped in at the waist) and the sales associate insisted I try one on. It fit like it was Made. For. Me. Not boxy in the least. I almost swooned, it was that gorgeous and looked that good on. I still had enough brain cells functioning to remind myself that it was completely out of the question.

  1. Good hubby!!! You will get tons of mileage out of those babies. Congrats on finding shoe luv. Hopefully your affair turns into permanent relationship, as my own fickle heart tends to wander (doesn’t outright stray, but it certainly does alot of suspect flirting).

  2. My guess is that a good 75 percent of the shopping done in Vegas is done under the influence. If you have time, do get to the outlets in Primm. The Last Call had a great shoe selection last time I was there. Bring a flask.

  3. Lucky girl! My 15 year old niece told me her ultimate gift would be a pair of Chanel ballet flats tucked inside a Chanel handbag! How funny is that; I mean, she’s 15! After all, one must be a certain age to appreciate such lovelies!

  4. Well, I love spectators and those are CLOSE ENOUGH to spectators to make me feel fondly about them. Glad you are in lust and love with them, though! They’re very flattering on you.

[And given what one *could* end up doing while under the influence in Vegas I’d say you skewed the right direction….]

    Happy wearing!

  5. LOL, been there, done that, and I hadn’t had any alcohol, either! But I did have two enabling friends with me. Ended up with a suit (on sale -yeah, right.) The shoes are gorgeous, enjoy them!

  6. I love the ballet flats on you. My only quibble is I dislike wearing things with logos on them, but the Chanel logo there is quite discreet.

May we ask about the reason not to get the jacket? Price? Is there a way to find a (cough cough) knock-off that would do? Vintage?

I own not a single item of Chanel except a small vial of No. 5. But I wish I could….

  7. aaonce – yes, he is a good one. He didn’t even flinch when he caught a glimpse of the price on the box. I can see wearing these for *decades* (and will try to take care of them so they’ll hold up) as they’re such classics.

    downthegardenpath – thank you!

Good Life in Virginia – thanks! We tend to splurge when we travel but try to be a bit more frugal in our daily lives.

  8. That’s Not My Age – thanks so much!

sarahn – I think we’ll definitely do that next time we visit. We didn’t have a car this time, so didn’t roam very far. SUI, I call it (Shopping Under the Influence).

SMR – thank you! The design of these is very flattering and graceful.

  9. Frugal Scholar – exactly! I don’t spend big bucks on anything trendy, save it for those items that will never go out of style. I was honestly surprised that these were so comfortable.

Town and Country Mom – I do feel lucky, thanks. Your niece has sophisticated taste, I guess!
    😉

Carrie – Thanks! Actually my feet are a little on the wide side, but these have enough room in the toe box. You might want to try them just for grins. (But don’t say I didn’t warn you…you might not want to take them off!)

  10. LPC – exactly! I mean, I have to keep him happy, yes? 😉

Sue – thanks, and yes he is but not just because he is a shopping enabler. 😀

hostess of the humble bungalow – oh, the Manhattan was sublime. I never would’ve finished it if it hadn’t tasted so darn good, a little sweet, a little smoky. And thank you, they feel quite divine.

  11. Parisienne Farmgirl – yes he is but also for all of the right reasons. He’s kind and caring, with good values and a good heart.

Mardel – thanks! I’ve been looking at these longingly for a while now, and can’t believe they’re actually mine!

Vix – thanks! Yes they are spectator-esque. And considering how quickly we could’ve lost the same amount at the blackjack table, at least I’ll have these for years.

  12. materfamilias – merci, and yes they’ll be perfect for some venues in Paris, but for all-day walking, I’ll want more sturdy soles.

    Lorrie – thank you!

SewingLibrarian – enabling friends are about the equivalent of two Manhattans! A Chanel suit though…excellent!

  13. Congratulations on your fantastic purchase. Selfishly though I do wish you had had a bit more to drink and brought home the jacket as well. Would love to see it on you.

  14. Heck, Pseu, I saw shoes just like that at Payless last week. On the BOGO sale table. (THAT WAS A FUNNY) Lovely, classic AND comfortable. You will wear them over and over, for years, so price-per-wear will make them not-so-expensive in the end. Wish you had a photo of the jacket. I love to see your clothes! Just rounded up all of my vintage and new scarves, they were in boxes and drawers everywhere, and I thought, “Pseu would never treat her scarves this way!” So now I can wear them, with you as inspiration. Your posts really do encourage me to go that little bit extra and finish the look, even though I live in scrubs 60 hours a week, and wearing real clothes sometimes feels like too much effort. Your words and pictures are appreciated!

  15. “Une” – this is soooo weird – I tried on those EXACT shoes last week in Chanel in Melbourne and Mr SE was with me saying…. “Yes, they are great, – I like them!!”
(He is off to Paris for business next week and hopefully will purchase them there for me!)
They look beautiful on you – just gorgeous – don’t you just love all the packaging and the box and the little dust bag for them too?

  16. oh my…i am so envious of your lovelies. you live the “grand” life. travel and goodies galore.

  17. Believe it or not, I have a pair of Chanel shoes also. They are without a doubt the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. Sadly, mine are just plain old loafers.

If you have to splurge, get something iconic!

  18. Love the shoes and the story… still, I’m speculating on what might have happened with 2 of those Manhattans under your belt. I confess to having bought a couple things under a similar set of circumstances but I’m not revealing the details 🙂

  19. Lisa – two of those Manhattans and I’d probably have a new jacket and a second mortgage…

LaurieAnn – maybe I can find one at one of the So Cal boutiques and try it on and get someone to snap a pic. It was divine.

Arabella – well, I wouldn’t encourage such a thing, but…..if you were to come home with one of those knits… 😉

  20. So next time I’m In NY, I’ll perambulate the husband past Missoni, after afternoon cocktails.

    Aren’t treats nice!?

  21. La Belette Rouge – well, they’re *almost* as fabulous as your red Viviers…

Maravonda – I’m so glad you’re enjoying your scarves! Thanks for letting me know. I actually store most of my silk squares folded in a plastic storage thingy. I need to be able to see them to get inspired. The bigger stole type scarves are kept folded over hangers during the cooler months, then stored in a box for summer.

Semi Expat – oh, I really hope you get them! We’ll be shoe twins!

  22. Julianne – they have about a 1/2″ heel, but I think they have similar “spectator” styles in pumps and slingbacks. I’ll bet you could find a style that works for you.

Faux Fuschia – thank you! I feel quite lucky indeed.

  23. I love, love, love your shoes. If I weren’t so rough on my shoes I would love to own a pair one day. Enjoy them.

Loving your pictures of LV. The Bellagio is a beautiful hotel. It’s bringing back some great memories.

  24. They look beautiful on you. Twice I talked myself into buying a pair, and twice, when I tried them on, they were too narrow or too *something* in the fit. If I recall, I was secretly relieved, but that desire has come rushing back seeing how terrific the shoes look on you!

  25. Bianca – it’s definitely a fun place and full of opportunities for instant gratification!

Duchesse – yes, the fact that I *know* I’ll wear there plenty kept the Post-Shopping Guilt Monster mostly at bay…

Lulu – I can be rough on shoes too but I’m making a point to take good care of these, will be taking them to the cobbler tomorrow to add a rubber half-sole, and no wearing for dog walking! The Bellagio really is stunning, isn’t it?

  26. WendyB – no jacket this year, I’m afraid, but it’s something to add to the save-up-for and monitor ebay list…

Bonjour Madame, Imogen and Milijana – thanks so much!

Miss Cavendish – you might see if they think the toe box can be stretched out a little bit. My feet run on the wide side of normal, so I hadn’t expected these to be comfortable and was pleasantly surprised.
