Working It Out

Our weather took a definite turn toward Spring yesterday, with temperatures in the high 70’s F.  I had to scramble a bit in the morning, and decided to go with my jeans-and-jacket formula. Not my most brilliant look (probably should have added some color with the scarf), but serviceable.

The Eileen Fisher tuxedo jacket I mentioned last week didn’t quite do it for me. The styling is nice, the fabric is lovely, but I didn’t love it on me. When I returned it to the store, I was browsing the sale rack and noticed the jacket I’m wearing above. It’s a very lightweight viscose rayon knit, with 3/4 sleeves and nice seamed shaping that flatters. It was marked down by half, and though I wasn’t specifically looking for another black jacket, this one’s light enough to wear during warmer months, helps to dress up the jeans a bit, and should pack nicely for travel if needed.

Jacket and tee: Eileen Fisher
Jeans: 7 for All Mankind
Scarf: Talbot’s “Paris” scarf (from a couple of years ago, I think) worn knotted as a necklace
Bracelet: enamel hinged bangle from Nordstrom (can’t remember brand)
The shoes are favorites, from a German Austrian brand called Think! that’s not easy to find here. You can see them better in this Polyvore I created last year:

More about this brand of shoes next week….

  1. A lightweight jacket is an essential, you look much more polished than in just a tee or sweater. Whenever I see a woman standing like that I want to escort her to the nearest bathroom.

  2. LOL, Duchesse! But, Bill Cunningham says that’s the stance for this age, and it’s much better than the pigeon-toed pose we’ve been seeing.

Pseu, I’m not liking the scarf, color would have helped, and the knots seem too contrived.

I’m not surprised the tuxedo jacket didn’t work, I thought that might be the case because the shawl collars often don’t drape properly. Anyway, the lightweight jacket you ended up with will be very useful, and looks nice.

  3. Actually, I think you were wise to keep your other colors neutral: cream, taupe, gray make plain black–especially lightweight black–look richer. That “pop of color” advised to brighten up black basics so often just looks gauche or cheap, don’t you think? especially reds, hot pinks or bright blues. Your jacket looks very wearable, useful and packable. ( Sorry–I’m so weary of black, it’s hard to muster lots of enthusiasm for one more item!) I’d seriously consider adding more interesting buttons…as I am thinking of doing to my own, very similar, BLACK knit jacket…

  4. That jacket looks great — and great on you!

I recently discovered that I am more comfortable wearing tailored shapes when they’re made out of knit, not woven fabric. That’s why I now have three jjill collared blouses in my wardrobe made of slubby knit cotton — with princess seams, they’re really flattering.

May have to add a knit blazer to my wishlist!

  5. Great score on the jacket Pseu! I like your outfit today. Polished, pulled together and subtle. Thanks for posting.

  6. Tres chic! I’m with Sal on the knotted scarf–you pull it off beautifully.

Love the scalloped vamp peeking out from your hem, too!

  7. I love the look, especially those cute shoes. I would love to see a video on how to tie a scarf like that.

  8. I have been observing your fashion evolution and watching you go from chic to tres tres chic! Your look is sophisticated, hip and AGELESS! Thank you for modeling wonderful, ageless style!

  9. A very polished work look — great way to make jeans look professional.
I, too, love the way you’ve knotted that scarf, but know I couldn’t carry it off — although I’m even more motivated to try after seeing this. Have you covered this one in a video?

I remember those Think shoes and covet them — there are a few places in Vanc’r that do carry them, but a limited selection compared to Europe.

  10. Duchesse – a lightweight jacket is definitely an essential here, and it’s surprisingly hard to find good ones. Re the pose: I have a hard time finding a stance that works head on and still provides enough stability to snap a reasonably clear photo. Surprisingly, this is a more stable pose than many. But if it’s bothering people, I’ll try to find something else to do with my feet. 😉

Rita – I do have some other scarves that perhaps work better with the knotting. It’s a way to incorporate a scarf on warmer days that minimizes fabric and bulk around the neck.

Sal – thanks! Some scarves take to this knot better than others.

Marguerite – thank you so much!

Jane W – thanks! The scalloped vamp is one of my favorite things about these shoes.

hostess – thanks! yes, those crazy mornings underscore the importance of a good core wardrobe.

    K-Line – thank you!

  11. C – thank you. I think the “pop of color” is a tricky thing. I find very vivid colors paired with black a bit jarring. But a soft pink or a plum might work. I have trouble mustering enthusiasm for black too, but dang if I don’t always find it to be a reliable fallback.

Susan Tiner – thanks! I’m re-posting a video tomorrow with the scarf tie.

That’s Not My Age – thanks, and your wish is my command… 😉

Rubiatonta – thank you, and me too! I’m finding that knit jackets are the way to go, just the right balance of softness and structure.

coffeeaddict – thanks! I love reading the differing opinions. It would be a dull world if we all liked the same things!

Terri – thank you! I’m very pleased with the fit on this one myself.

Tiffany – thanks so much! Yes, and will repost it.

Anonymous – you are very kind, thank you so much.

materfamilias – thank you! I’ve had these shoes for a couple of years now, and they are definitely among my favorites; comfortable with with that bit of attitude I look for in footwear. On our last trip to Paris, we walked daily past a shoe store on Rue Beaubourg that carried many styles from this brand. I’m sorry now I didn’t pick up another pair.

  12. Though I’m the first to advocate for a pop of colour, I think this outfit is perfect just as it is. Refined, put together and not at all ‘thrown together in a rush’.
But I do agree with Duchesse, there is something unnatural in the crossed legs pose.
After reasding what others wrote, I was surprised to see how much opinions vary on today’s post.

  13. You look great! I’ve been reading your blog regularly for a while now and I really enjoy your thoughts on this and that, so I guess, it’s time to say “Thank you!”. Think! is more of a niche brand over here in Germany, too (they are actually Austrian), their shoes are durable and I also like the fact that their dye is eco-friendly. Good choice!

  14. I guess Duchesse would be escorting me to the bathroom night and day…that’s my trademark pose!

And when I had a pose-off on my blog, I thought everyone looked great doing it!

  15. Pseu – if you are looking once again for Think shoes, you can visit the homepage of “Schuhpaket.com”. The site isn’t very inspiring, but they have a lot of brands and they will ship all over Europe.
