Falling in love again…

Celine, from Style.com

…with  c o l o r… rich, saturated, autumn color.

Lately I’ve absolutely been craving some color in my wardrobe, and I hope that once the fall clothing starts hitting the racks, I’m not as disappointed as I was last year. (“Camel! Camel will be everywhere for Fall 2010!” the Fashion Mavens declared, yet though I searched from high[end] to low[end], hardly a whit of it was to be found.)

Some of these J.Crew pieces look promising (though maybe not all together in the same outfit as styled here)…
I’d wear the trench with the pants, but not the shoes too.
Love the melon/red combo!

Again, it’s the combination of colors, not necessarily these particular pieces that inspire.

J.Crew Fall 2011 Lookbook.

My palate/palette has felt parched for color lately, and I find myself drinking in images like the ones above like a tall cold glass of water on a sweltering day. I’m not abandoning my neutrals, but lately my wardrobe has felt drab and uninspiring. (I’ve been sensing a broader style shift, more on this to come.) I’ve found myself reaching for the few pieces in my closet with some color (and/or structure) more often in recent weeks and will be keeping an eye out for the ochres, russets, olives, purples that we’ve been promised for fall.

What about you? Are you inspired by color? Are there any colors or styles for fall you’re looking forward to adding to your wardrobe?

  1. Can’t live without the color. In fact, I am wearing an red linen suit with a patterned blouse in red, purple, beige and white today. I love the purple and green color combo, but I’m not ready for fall colors yet.

  2. That deep purple sweater is heavenly with the muted green – although not with those particular pants, I agree. I picture it with a long olive skirt and boots. Thanks for sharing, these are lovely ideas.

  3. These are gorgeous. J. Crew does so well with color, no matter how far astray they wander with silhouette etc. My current fantasies involve aubergine and pale blue:).

  4. I am having a love affair with orange!

It adds a much needed punch of colour to my basic black and white wardrobe.
I do not think that I will be straying away from my go to colours….
well maybe the occasional flirtation but I am pretty faithful:)

  5. I am definitely a color person. In fact I am working with a decorator right now in remodeling my bathroom/bedroom, and I had to gently steer her away from wanting to paint my bathroom walls grey…we are now going for a nice seafoam, and I just found a lovely toile fabric in seafoam (with white and beige.)

In my clothing I am the same. While I couldn’t live without black pants, and I love the grey Eileen Fisher sweater I bought last year, beiges wash me out; and I just get bored with neutrals all the time. I look good in turquoise, pinks, pale blue, and beautiful colors make me happy. I also love the burgundies and plums in fall. My challenge is to wear the colors in a sophisticated way.

  6. Notice these models are tall with typical matchstick figures, While I like colour- and you have shown us some gorgeous colours- a column of colour (not necessarily matching, but complementary tones) does not cut the figure in two like these bold stylings.

Or, a coat like that luscious melon over grey- probably much kinder for those of us with hips and bust.

  7. Hello:
We are certain that our wardrobes would have you heading quickly for the hills! Black and white are the order of the day although we are not averse to the flash of deepest fuchsia or Habsburg yellow if fancy flies!!

  8. I love all of these looks because of the shade of the colors…just like you. I lean more toward autumn shades than pastels (don’t like pastels any longer)…I want a deep, saturated color and fall looks very promising…but I just might wear them past fall!!

  9. Moi aussi. I just pulled out clothes to go on vacation and the sea of black made me want to hit my head on the wall. I added some red so that I would totally go crazy. I love color but sometimes I get stuck – last year, I seemed to only want to wear turquoise. For some reason, I want burgundy this fall. But neutrals do nothing for me in terms of making me feel energized and happy.

  10. I love these looks from Jcrew! But where did you find them? Are they from a past season? I can’t seem to find any of these items on the web site…Would love to get that trench!

  11. I can’t tell ahead of time because I like to change my mind and my colors. Since I have to hide a few extra pounds, I like to keep it simple and not too flashy.. my colors are in the accesoires..shoes, scarfs, handbag, earrings, jewelry in general

  12. Pseu, your choices of color for punch remind me of the accent pieces your stylist helped you put together for the Paris trip before last. Non? I think these shades are great for your coloring. As you are, I’m petite, size 6 or 4 sometimes, and don’t do well with the color blocking that divides my top and bottom halves. But I do like some color somewhere, mostly.
This summer it’s been dark navy everything with white, turquoise, and coral.

  13. I love the rich warm autumn colours too. So luxurious and sophisticated, the epitome of chic and polished. Unfortunately I look like I’m dying of consumption every time I try to wear camel, chestnut or burnt orange 🙁

  14. I love color too, but I always revert back to neutrals for my basic clothing. Now I satisfy my kodachrome cravings with accessories like an apple green leather bag, red ballet flats or turquoise pashmina. Baby steps to be sure, but I have to start someplace.

  15. I like orange, but that’s not my absolute favorite.

I love the teal/rust, although I agree about the shoes being too much. I might also switch out the different colored t-shirt for something that flows with the pants. J Crew models are always un-godly tall and slim. Shorter gals like myself benefit from stronger verticals.

  16. Sadly I keep getting drawn to black. I really must move on and try to wear a few more colours. You have a lovely selection of outfits and I love the red bag in image three. Fifi

  17. These color combos are wonderful, especially the red and melon pairing, but I have to agree with Duchesse that a column of color works better if you’re not a matchstick.

  18. Jane and Lance Hattatt – actually, I love the crisp, chic look of a black and white ensemble. But for some reason, I’m also craving the spice of variety.

    Bourbon & Pearls – but you’re such a lovely latte…

Pam – I’ve never been drawn to pastels, and always have loved fall colors. I wear them year round.

Eva – your suit sounds vibrant and cheerful!

Sal – and you combine and wear color so well!

Amanda – they’re on the website, from the Fall 2011 Lookbook. I’ve added a link.

coffeeaddict – it sounds like you may favor cooler colors then, maybe some purples, burgundy’s, cobalt blues?

Patti – ooh, yes, it would look great with a long skirt!

  19. LPC – oh yes, aubergine and pale blue. That would be a wonderful combo on you!

hostess – orange is such a great color, isn’t it? A little can go a long way.

Jill Ann – I think beige can be tricky, yes. Turquoise goes nicely with so many other colors.

RoseAG – me too with the verticals. I’ll have something up tomorrow to address that.

FifiB – I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with black. I’ve been drawn to and wearing a predominantly black and grey wardrobe for a few years now. It’s only recently that I’ve really *wanted* to add color as opposed to feeling that I *should.*

  20. Duchesse – I agree and will try to address that a bit tomorrow.

Susan Tiner – it’s true, and requires a bit more planning, but it can be done.

Toby Wollin – I don’t know if it was living with an almost all-black wardrobe while on vacation or just seeing so many colors coming out for fall that I really love, but I’m really wanting to strike out into color territory a bit more now.

    t – thanks.

this is Belgium – using accessories for color is a good way to go too. Color it tricky to get right with clothing but there are ways to use it to create a flattering effect.

  21. Swissy – actually yes, those were also predominantly fall colors. I’m a recent convert to navy, and LOVE how beautifully it pairs with other colors.

Tiffany – yellow and orange always cheer me up too. I’m really liking a lot of J.Crew’s colors these days.

Deb – neutrals with accessories for color are a great way to go too.

  22. Love the deep autumn colours – I don’t tend to wear a lot of bright colours, but I have to admit that I’ve bought a yellow (!) shirt and an orange linen top from J Crew recently. They’re for spring/summer here, and I can’t wait to wear them! I probably won’t be doing any daring pairing – just with denim or khakis – but having the shot of colour in my wardrobe to look at through winter cheers me up.

  23. Thank you for this review. I am quite shy with colors, but I like the fourth picture ( olive green pants ), even though that green does not belong in my summer color palette. The top ( color ) looks good with it.
I really have not thought about adding some specific color to my wardrobe. It depends so much on what piece of clothing is in question, the shape, the model and last, but not least on my mood.

  24. Hmmmm…this will be very interesting to watch, as you do tend to enjoy your neutrals — and these are some bold shades! And now you’re throwing in a “new style direction” teaser, too.

As a recovering blacktextile-a-holic who has embraced color with the fervor of a born-again, I admit I am excited to see where you go with this!

[And I’m living proof that one can go without one item of black/substitute neutral on one’s body and still survive for at least a day, ha.]

Are your orange sandals still in good shape and getting lots of playtime this summer? Hope so!

  25. I like a bit of color too. Eileen Fisher’s colors are usually just right for me. They are quite toned down and sedate while still adding variety to my wardrobe when I need it.

  26. metscan – you’re very particular about what colors you allow in; I didn’t expect you to be gung-ho on this one.
    😉

Style Crone – I could so see you in that orange coat (with just the right hat, of course!).

Couture Allure – Eileen Fisher colors I find very easy to wear and coordinate. And I think their colors keep getting better too.

Vix – I don’t think I’ll achieve your level of wardrobe color saturation quite yet, but I do feel ready to take some baby steps. Yes, I’m still wearing and loving the orange Fluevogs (though they’re slingbacks, not sandals).

  27. Belle – are you back from the Mosquito Coast? I don’t think you’re missing anything. While I’m drawn to some of the individual pieces, the styling is just a bit too wackadoo for my taste.
