Rise Of The Burgundian Empire

Source

From the look of things at the mall and online, there’s a new color on the horizon that’s poised to reign this fall. Call it Burgundy, Bordeaux, Wine, Oxblood, Deep Red, Russet…it’s everywhere. More sophisticated and elegant than the orange (excuse me, Tangerine Tango) that was declared the Supreme Ruler of Spring 2012, this hue plays well with neutrals (black, brown, navy, grey, taupe) and other colors, and has real staying power.

For the most part, I think this color trend translates well to accessories, and when you pair this color with classic designs, you’ll have pieces that can span not only seasons but years.

Marc Jacobs
Yves Saint Laurent
Ralph Lauren (yes, these are women’s)

Lanvin
Frye
Miu Miu

Vaneli
Valentino
Miu Miu (had to throw these in just for fun)
Marc Jacobs

J.Crew (color is a bit softer IRL than it looks here)
Marc Jacobs (be still my beating heart…)
Longchamp

What do you think? Is there a taste of Burgundy in your future?

  1. Love this color as long as it doesn’t drift to the blue/purple end of burgundy. It has been difficult to impossible to find for many seasons. I’m looking forward to replacing a few worn out favorites.

  2. I agree with most of the other commenters – I love this color and have loved it, especially for shoes, since I was a kid. So versatile, especially when travelling. I can’t wait to see what I can find. YAY!

On the other hand, I am reminded of that fabulous scene in Devil Wear Prada when Meryl Streep tells Ann Hathaway about cerulean blue and why she is wearing it…

  3. OH my! I’m going to love dressing for fall. This color looks good on everyone.
Every piece you feature is GORGEOUS but the Miu Miu bag is on my want list and the Ralpy Lauren Shoes and the Marc Jacobs shoes are making me melt!!

  4. This is a lovely color and I can certainly work with it. In fact, I have a vintage pair of Charles Jourdan shoes in burgundy suede (new when I purchased them 30 years ago), that can be called back into action. They were too big for me when I purchased them (youthful days), but now I have had them stretched as they became 1/2 size too small. These shoes were actually made in Paris and not China! The shoemaker was successful in stretching them. They survived because they were to large for my smaller feet back in the day and hardly saw any wear. THey were so beautiful I could not part with them. Now, I have a beautiful pair of shoes in BURGUNDY (small silver wings embroiders on side add a little flair). The heels are not too high!

  5. Bag, you bet. I couldn’t wear this color, it’d be almost as horrific as yellow:). But the bags are classic. Love that Lanvin. Nice trend-spotting!

  6. When I was younger it seems I could wear all of the red wine shades. Now older I need more of the bright jewel tones. I think a velvet blazer in the color of the J.Crew sweater or the color of the Miu Miu shoes may work well.

  7. Yes! I bought a pair of deep red patent pumps just last evening. I’m trying to keep my eyes averted from the new syrah-colored Prada pumps at the same store. Wish me luck!!!

  8. Jewel tones are my favorite…deep saturated colors like this! I love the Vaneli shoe! One of the reasons I love fall fashion is wine….and eggplant…and browns…and rust…and deep greens…navy blues…burnt orange…can’t wait!!

  9. I’ve always been partial to burgundy leather items. If merchants have good choices at my price points I’m likely to update/replace belts, shoes, maybe even a bag.

Given the anemic state of the economy it’s probably a good thing for retailers. They can sell accessories in a classic color. A new belt, scarf, shoe is easier to swing than a full wardrobe.

  10. This is one color that looks dreadful against my skin — it really does wretched things to my complexion. Burgundy tries to be the bridge between ruby and chocolate and fails miserably. Count me out.

  11. OMG! I do love these Burgundy colors much more than orange.
Even though it is fun to wear it on my toe- and fingernails this Summer.

  12. Yay! For once I’m ahead of the curve!

Bought a pair of “Bozen Marone” Josef Seibel boots on sale at the end of last winter. Love the way the color looks with black, navy, olive and grey. Doesn’t get any more versatile than that, and I’ve been waiting for the burgundy family to come back into vogue for years.

  13. Love these items! I am not a big fan of red, but love the claret/burgundy tones. Burgundy with navy or camel, lovely!

  14. Bien sur! On my feet, on my arm, on my body, and in my glass (though not all at once)! It reminded me too of that iconic Aigner color — I had an Aigner bag this color when I first got out of college, 34 years ago. I’m glad it’s back.

Burgundy, cordovan, maroon — I think they’re all pretty close to each other, if not interchangeable.

  15. Those bags are beautiful, and their shapes are terrific-let’s hear it for simplicity without the ridiculous gewgaws we’ve seen for too long. I’m iffy about the color, however-I’ll drink burgundy but wearing it, with my light hair and ruddy skin? No way.

    1. I am with Gretchen. Love the bags. Hate the hardware and bling that some designers feel the need to ornament an otherwise beautiful bag.

  16. Personally I love orange, although as a warm-pale-skinned deep-golden-blonde, it’s easier for me maybe. (However, the two colors *together* would be gorgeous. I just may try it…!)

Just wanted to note though that (as DocP has recognized) there is a whole range of these deep reds and just as with red lipstick, there are blue-based versions and yellow-based versions and on some of us only one of those works. To me, “wine” and “russet” are quite different, not equivalent at all.

Jumping on the bandwagon, I too bought a pair of beautiful suede pumps with some metallic-y patent trim in burgundy (they called it Crimson and, yes, it pretty much is the Harvard color), but they’ve been waiting since 2010 for the right moment to make their debut. Looks like this is it! I knew they would come in handy one day.

  17. That Valentino bag is incredible. I remember these shades being everywhere in 1976-77. I had Aigner boots that I adored with a not-quite-YSL Russian peasant outfit. Wish I had a pic of me in that…

  18. Yes, this will be a great color to add to my core pieces of black, navy, and gray. I agree with some of the others that there is likely a color in this family right for almost everyone. I lean toward the warm skin tone side, so I’ll be looking for the right shade in a blouse or cardigan. But there are so many choices – a bag or shoe would really brighten up the black. And how about a lipstick or scarf? Fun stuff.

  19. Our school blazer and cardigan were burgundy and, although it suited me with my dark hair, I remember that it didn’t look good on my blonde friend nor on red-heads. I think I will settle for accessories – as I don’t particularly want to be reminded of my school days!

  20. The color on the Marc Jacobs shoe has ” just the right hue” ” of the burgundy color. I have used it a lot in our interiors- here and there -, but for clothes, accessories, I am doubtful, extremely picky.
Now, if this color really starts to fill the shop shelves, I´ll certainly step aside.
You saw a lot of trouble selecting all the articles for us to view, thank you.

  21. I agree burgundy makes a good accessory colour I have not seen it around for a few years so it is welcome back.

  22. Hmmm, it still has connotations from the early 90s attached to it for me – particularly those burgundy flats pictured above. I must have had a pair that I’ve blocked out of conscious thought!
