Dans le jardin…

The upside of our current heat wave is that it’s triggered our Night Blooming Jasmine bush to flower. The fragrance at night outside our bedroom is heavenly. This is an heirloom plant, grown from a cutting of a cutting from a 100+-year-old plant from the garden of the home where my father lived as a child in San Diego.

My father and his grandmother (my great-grandmother). He was 11 years old when this picture was taken.

  1. I love the photo of your father. When I see something like this the first thing I notice is what people are wearing and compare it in my mind to what people would wear if that photo were taken today. No doubt you would see some baggy falling down jeans, tacky sweatsuits, and most of the subjects would be glued to a cell phone texting. In this photo, everyone is dressed impeccably, probably regardless of income or social status. Look at the coat hem to skirt hemline ratio, it’s perfect. Everyone has a proper outer coat. The women are carrying clutches, not oversize hobo bags with logos or bling. It’s such an interesting contrast to today. I hope I didn’t go off on a tangent there!

    1. Well said, indeed! When I first read the post, my thoughts were taking the same train. Your father was quite the young man and great-grandmother Is stylish and chic. I’ve been watching Poirot on Netflix, not only for the engaging storylines, but the fashions, decor and deportment. Stephanie has stated so eloquently my own thoughts. Excellent post (and comments)!

    2. I too shared the same thoughts as Stephanie. It’s so rare these days to see anyone really well dressed (but when you do see them, they really stand out!). I have similar pictures of my parents and grandparents….they were far from wealthy, but always well turned out, at least in the pictures! I especially regret the demise of hat-wearing; so stylish! Although I am not a hat wearer, at least partly because I have a very large head. But I admire hats on others.

  2. Wonderful! Jasmine is such an evocative smell — I’ve had it in pots here before but it doesn’t make it through the winter.
What a great photo of your father and great-grandmother — easy to see where your sartorial instincts come from!

  3. Awesome bloom – and totally awesome photo! I love the full circle nature of the flower. That gorgeous aroma is one that generations of family members have also experienced.

  4. Such a wonderful photo! We just crossed over Treasure Island about a week ago! I love the idea of having a plant that comes from an heirloom.

  5. What a great picture of your pops and his Oma! He is a dapper young gent!

I love the smell of night blooming jasmine- it is poetry spoken by the moon whispered at midnight to every beautiful woman.

  6. What a wonderful picture. Those were the days when people dressed up to go out in public. I think that people in those days treasured what they owned more than we do today. They had much less and appreciated it much more.

  7. You have a live treasure in your garden, an heirloom indeed, to be well taken care of.
A lovely picture. You have your father´s features. This is a compliment: ).

  8. Beautiful floral heirloom – truly a treasure – I have climbing jasmine on a side fence and know that wonderful fragrance. I love the family photo – such flair and confidence in dress and attitude – reminds me of the une femme! Stay cool!

  9. Everyone in the photo is wearing a hat! I long for the return of that fashion. Great photo. And I love all scented plants, esp. jasmine. Lucky you!
