Friday’s Assortment

From the marché in Aix en Provence, April 2012

We’re having some crazy Santa Ana wind here in LA, and hot, dry conditions again. 🙁

I just wanted to thank everyone for your comments on Monday’s and Wednesday’s posts. I’m going to respond to them individually over the weekend.

Choppers.

From “Sons of Anarchy.” I haven’t watched it, though I hear it’s good.

No, not that kind. (Though I thought no one would mind a little gratuitous Man Candy.) I’m talking teeth.  I may have mentioned over the summer that I’d broken one of my lower back molars, sheared it in two right down to the roots. Fortunately (?) it was my only tooth with a root canal, so I wasn’t in any pain. It had to be extracted, and I elected to go forward with an implant. Both my regular dentist and the oral surgeon made the case that it was the best way to prevent shifting of my remaining teeth and probable further tooth loss. I was a bit nervous, but on Monday had the actual implant done (the crown will come later after a few weeks of healing and making sure the implant is well anchored).

It looks rather gruesome in the picture at left, but the actual procedure to do the implant itself was a piece of cake. Local anasthesia, less than 45 minutes from start to finish, no pain at all, and only a little swelling at the jawline for a few days. If you’ve considered implants but are squeamish about the process, don’t worry! As I told the oral surgeon, I’ve had routine dental cleanings that were more uncomfortable. In a few weeks, they’ll add the post above the gum line, and then my dentist will take impressions and get a crown made. The biggest drawback is the cost…this isn’t cheap and isn’t covered on a lot of dental plans. But it seemed to be the better option than a partial denture or risking further tooth loss.

Lips.

On to more pleasant topics, I’m still crazy about my Dior Rouge de Serum lip color. It’s one of the few lip color products I’ve used all the way up, and multiple times. The colors are sheer, and the formula feels and works like a lip balm, but with MUCH more staying power. I just picked up a new color, #730 (Coral Serum) which coordinates nicely with my recently redder hair and fall clothing colors.

Dior Beauty Serum de Rouge.

Pears.

It’s pear season again!  I’ve ordered our first box of Harry and David Royal Riviera Pears, which to date are the very best pears I’ve ever had, short of picking them ripe right off the tree.

Have a very bon weekend!

  1. Thank you for the implant review! I am facing my first implant soon, and rather anxious about it, so your post is timely and reassuring. I shall reward myself afterward with a new Dior Beauty Serum de Rouge : >

  2. The Dior lipsticks look lovely, but I have a dreadful time with quasi-allergic reactions to so many lip products. (Even worse since that nasty sting on my lip last summer; some of the products that used to be fine no longer are since then.)

Oddly enough, Dior Addict gloss works (soothing) wonders. Whatever its ingredients, they’re very soothing. (How do these sheer colors feel on the lips? Are they moisturizing?)

  3. I had to have a root canal last week due to a cracked tooth whose root had become inflamed. It was not difficult except for the fact that I accidentally bit my lip a few hours later while it was still numb. I’ll be getting a crown on the tooth next.

Interesting commentary on implants in case that is in my future someday.

  4. My dentist is into implants in a big way, and they may well be in my future. Really, I often think that teeth are a huge design flaw. . . .
love Sons of Anarchy by the way.

  5. Harry & David pears are beyond awesome! My brother used to send us a box of pears and apples at Christmas. Last year he decided to change it up, and send a lovely cheese assortment instead. I love cheese, but I really missed those pears! Here’s hoping he switches back to pears this year. Not that I’m being greedy or anything.

  6. I had my first dental implant in 2000 and my second in 2010. They are the best – you don’t worry about them – once they are in – they are just like regular teeth and treated just the same. I don’t have any experience with removable bridges, etc. – but I figure they must be more work!

Only drawback is the cost – I rationalized by putting the charge on my credit card and getting miles the first time and cash back the second…..

  7. My husband just went through the same tooth issue and I know it is not fun! I am trying to focus on the pears and not the motorcycle!!

  8. Thanks for the reminder to order my Harry and David pears – I agree they are the best (and the perfect ripeness). Enjoy your weekend!

  9. I completely agree on taking care of one’s teeth and doing whatever needs to be done, if one can afford it. I had a root canal and crown done a few years ago, and insurance paid only a small part of it. I put the rest on a medical card and paid it off, interest-free, over the course of the year.

  10. Thank you for the great eye candy. No better accessory for a man than a big black motorcycle!!

Unfortunately the other meaning of ‘choppers’ also applies to me – one of my upper molars self destructed a week ago. I’ve got a regular cleaning appointment coming up early in November and it isn’t bothering me so I’m waiting to see what my dentist says. Sadly tooth brittleness seems to be one of the falling apart effects of getting older.

On a happier note, at lunch I went and got myself one of the Dior lipsticks on your recommendation. I like the idea of sheer colour, it sounds very wearable, not too thick and drying. I got Violet. Hope I’m as happy with this product as you are!

  11. Oh, I watch Sons of Anarchy! Well, my hubby’s show but I’ve kinda am hooked now. Yes, he IS quite the handsome fella! 😀
As for the implant, it’s the best option for a tooth replacement. It’s worth the investment…next best thing to your natural tooth. I’ve had one placed several years ago and it’s been great!
    I love Harry & David!

  12. How curious these implants are. I wonder if they are in my future too–as i have a crown on nearly every molar by this point. I started my year with a similar tooth–in fact, it fell apart in my mouth on New Years.

  13. Wow, thanks for this first hand experience on getting an implant. I’ve often wondered and considered this possibility if sometime in the future a similar thing happened to me.
    Happy weekend!

  14. Hello, I have just discovered your blog today, it has many personality…in brief, I like it a lot !!!

    Excuse my english…

  15. Wow, quite an assortment, Susan! Beautiful image of the sectioned squash. Best wishes for the remainder of your implant procedure, and I hope you too are having a lovely weekend.
