Colorado Rockies

This is why we bundle up, put on heavy, clunky ski boots, and gasp for oxygen at 11,000+ feet. Aside from the sheer fun of skiing, bien sur.

First lift ride of the day…
First run of the day

Notice anything missing? There were several times yesterday when le monsieur and I had the entire run to ourselves. It will get more crowded as the week progresses, but what a way to start the week!
Scenery aside, I had a great day skiing. My body picked up the rhythm of it almost immediately and it felt like dancing. I worked on my turns a bit in the morning, and by the afternoon was cruising down the blue (intermediate) runs with ease.

Jeune homme had a fabulous first day. He was grinning from ear to ear and even did a happy dance in his ski boots at the end of the day. Needless to say, we were breathing a big sigh of relief.

Rose Bowl

This is my favorite run on the mountain.

Action shot.

Hope you’re having a lovely week!

  1. Beautiful! Your favorite slope looks like the kind I loved back in my skiing days: wide open, not too bumpy, great for cruising. We used to ski at Purgatory in Colorado, when I lived in New Mexico. After we moved to TX, we would fly up to Park City where we had friends who welcomed visitors. But after the kids came along, we gave up the ski trips; too expensive, too complicated.

Next year both will be in college and I’m thinking about scheduling a post-New Year’s ski trip, since they don’t go back to school till mid-January. Youngest one has never skiied, older one skiied at Vail at age 3 1/2, so I’m thinking it’s time they tried it out. Husband is not too excited about the idea, and I for one would have to start all over with lessons (plus do a lot of conditioning beforehand). But when I look at that vista, oh, I would love to be up there again!

  2. Hoping you have a grand time. The landscape is breathtaking. That sky!

Keep those bindings tight and those knees loose!

    Cheers,

    April

  3. I haven’t been up there since my honeymoon which was in Keystone. Thanks for reminding me how beautiful it is! Enjoy!!

  4. Looks like you’re having a blast!
I only like skiing when it’s sunny out like it is for you.
    Don’t forget your sunscreen!

  5. You’re there! And it looks amazing! We always like to go at off peak times as well….there is something so wonderful about having the place to yourself….enjoy!

  6. How gorgeous! Luxurious to have all that glorious space to yourselves, and good for the heart. May the great times continue!

  7. I am so glad you are having a wonderful time, that conditions are great, that the bod is in gear and that le petit monsieur is enjoying himself (when he’s happy, everyone is happy!). When I am skiing I am unfailingly grateful for the physical and financial wherewithall that allows me to be up there and experience those views and to dance down the slopes. And being grateful makes all kinds of other wonderful things happen both on and off the slopes. To skiing! — Effie May

  8. Wow! The view, the weather and the sheer luxury of having the slope to yourself. Heaven. And how you manage to look chic even in full ski gear is beyond me

    1. sophisticatedlady66, yes they are still incredibly comfortable. And I was SO glad to have them last night as it was snowing and soles provided a lot of traction.

  9. Where did you ski? It looks amazing, love the lack of crowds! Can’t wait for our trip at the end of the month, you have just whet my appetite!

    1. Lisa, we’re at Beaver Creek, which is just a few miles west of Vail. Have a wonderful trip…if you’re coming to Colorado, at least they’re getting a bit of snow now.

  10. Both you and the view are gorgeous and inspiring, but even better is hearing that your son (and thus you all) had only good in his day. Hope that lasted!
