Go Bold Or Stay Home

That’s what the voices were telling me as I was getting dressed to go out with le monsieur for sushi a few nights ago.

Despite the funky pose (mis-calculated the shutter delay) this is one of my favorite outfit pictures ever; I love how the scarf caught the light.

I started off the shoot with my favorite fleur-de-lis pinky ring from Beladora II, but decided that something bolder and tougher was called for, so switched out for these leather bracelets.

Here comes Lars again to photobomb.

Showing the camera his best side…
“Oh alright, here’s a back scratch.”
I am powerless over the kittehs.
Head to toe…
Earrings: Pearl Paradise, here. I absolutely adore these and wear them frequently. Big stonking keshis in a color that glows like sunset.
Scarf: J.Crew. Here’s something similar in Liberty print.
Cardigan: Eileen Fisher, few years old.  Similar shape.
Sweater: J.Crew Leopard Tippi from last year.  Other Tippi sweaters here (print) and here (solid).
Leather Wrap Bracelets: Stella and Dot, here and here.
Jeans: NYDJ “Jade” leggings, here. (Available in Petite and Plus too.)
Boots: Stuart Weitzman, several years old.  Similar shape.
We started off the evening with a drink at the historic Culver Hotel, where the cast of Wizard of Oz (the original, not the recent Disney pre-quel) stayed during filming, and where the actors playing the Munchkins allegedly had orgies and trashed hotel rooms! I hadn’t been there in years, and really enjoyed the ambience in the lobby bar.
That lighted case in the background is a wonderfully cheesy Wizard of Oz diorama.
Our favorite local spot for sushi is K-Zo. We grab a seat at the sushi bar and go with chef’s recommendations for the night.  This has led us to become rather bold with our sushi choices too!
Live scallop sushi…wonderfully delicate texture and flavor. This has become a favorite of ours.
Sweet shrimp
These were delicious washed down with cold sake!
Are there any fun spots near you with a notorious past?

  1. I wholeheartedly support your idea, bold is the way to go… as you will see from my last two posts, love the bright red – vibrancy- worn with my favourite leopard print! Lars also seems to like it!

  2. First, I too am powerless over Lars – he is magnificent! Second, your scarf is just gorgeous (as is the Liberty print one). You look chic head to toes.
And the hotel lobby looks truly like an event to be experienced (history of orgies!). We had a great Mexican restaurant, now defunct, that was allegedly haunted. Made for good convo over margaritas : >

  3. Such a witty, happy going-out ensemble and… those tempura prawns!

I used to visit a bar that had been a speakeasy with a fake library wall that led to a gambling den. Supposedly my parents were busted there (along with other town fathers) during prohibition. My mother turned to my father and said, “Bill, what are all these policemen doing here? You would think they would go home and change their uniforms before having a drink.”

  4. Your series of photos is superb. I’m sure that the colorful scarf with leopard print turned heads throughout your festive evening.

I’m thinking of searching for a Lars of my own.

  5. I love the Culver hotel! I was the construction manager that oversaw the reconfiguration of downtown in the mid 90’s and we found pedestrian tunnels underground to/from the hotel. I checked around and heard that they were thought to be the secret way ladies of ill repute were snuck into the hotel back in the day. It’s a very interesting place!!

  6. I love the shot of color coming from the scarf- and the pattern play of its floral with the animal print top. You look “effortlessly” chic, which is one of my highest compliments. Kitty looks pretty effortless cute, too.

  7. The pop of colour from your gorgeous scarf really makes your outfit sing. There is a feeling of movement and you look so relaxed and natural in front of the camera. I see there is a vintage vehicle in the background. Is it yours by any chance?
That sushi looks delicious. Mr HB and I love to go out for sushi.

    1. I live in London, England and I hope you have a great time when you come over 🙂 Fingers crossed that the weather is good for your vacation. I’ve spent many vacations in Southern California specifically for the guaranteed sunshine 🙂 Kind Regards, Cynthia

  8. love the post…I would wear this…I would eat there…and I love the leather bracelets!! Spring IS the time to go bold or go home! You look great!

  9. How fun, you outfit is perfect, I love a bright interesting scarf. And I love a photobombing cat every time!

  10. You look “put together” for the evening. The bracelets, the earrings and the scarf make your outfit interesting. It really is all in the details. In my packing piles, I was considering a red scarf. I think that I will take it. It will add impact to my neutrals. Your photos are fabulous. Your blog is so rich that I keep finding new features like Les scènes de Paris. Less than one week before I leave! Bonne journée.

  11. I am now encouraged to go bolder with my own scarves. See what thou hast wrought???

Unfortunately, we live in a sedate part of town where nothing much happens in the way of orgies….to my knowledge, that is. But then, I’m always the last to know anything.

By the way, our Sweetie (who had been sitting on my lap while I read your post) now has a crush on your Lars. He’s a charmer, that’s for sure.

  12. This coral-red is gorgeous on you, the funky pose is a favourite here as well, and Lars is a wondrous creature! I love storied locations.

  13. That scarf looks very pretty on you, I think Lars approves. I love sushi, but I have to travel quite a long distance to get it.

  14. You have such classic pieces in your wardrobe, yet they always look new. I agree with you about the photo where the light catches the color of the scarf – so pretty!

That sushi looks so yummy, and what fun stories about the hotel. I’m not aware of any like that here, but maybe I should start asking around.

  15. I choose the shrimp then sushi if you ask me. And about your outfit. I love your style with red scarf and look amaze. You also look great with those kind of bracelet. 10 point from ten I give you.

  16. Love that pop of color the scarf brings, and I adore the leather bracelets! Those are the jeans uou were telling me about. I’m definitely going to have a look at those first chance I get. They look terrific on you!

  17. Such a fun mix of patterns. The scarf is utterly brilliant in every way.

    I’m a fool for photo-bombing four-leggeds 🙂 Lars is a real looker.

  18. It was the leopard print calling to the kitteh! Really, really like the combined neutrals, the shape of your boots (so flattering for your petit-ness)and the bracelets. And of course the scarf!
