  1. Great post. I’ve been thinking about this, too. I know a couple of well-dressed women who are a different person every day. No signature. I find it jarring to see them walk in every day almost as a different character.

I think maybe some people have felt that about me sometimes as I attempt to evolve my style past the simplest unaccessorized basics. But I am definitely shooting for a signature style, and also working on my mantra!–adelfa

  2. Great article, Une Femme. I like your mantra of Simple Chic, and your question “would I wear this in Paris”? Wonderful qualifiers!

  3. My taste is so eclectic
there are days I’d wear dresses and accessorize a lot
and there are days I just feel like wearing ripped jeans and shirt
no accessories nor make up at all… I guess I go by my mood and how I feel.
But I seriously need to develop my own style. Great post over there.

  4. What a great well thought out essay. I’ve never much thought about my style but I must have one because since high school I’ve been known for my style..even tho I’m not sure what it is. My husband says it’s bohemian prep. Okay. Whatever. I do know that I love clothes and I love to see people wear wonderful things that are so obviously perfect for them. I worked for a while at a very posh high end boutique and as beautiful as the clothes were, they were just not me and I felt very strange having to wear these clothes every day. Even though I was getting a huge discount on very expensive stuff! Love your blog so much. We classic girls in our 50’s need to stick together!

  5. I´ve never sought for a certain ” style “. I just buy ( very much less these days ) clothes and accessories which
please my eye. Usually they fit with the little I already have.
Comfort, good quality and some edge with the article fill my criteria.

    1. Mette, you just described your personal style! WHen one can pick something out and have it work well with what already exists in the wardrobe, one has developed an eye for personal style. And that is a signature look, for it all works together and says “you” just as much as anything verbal. Brava!

  6. Your thoughts about signature style is right on. My style icon in my late teens was the Great Audrey. (Having that as a middle name also helped!) I would ask myself when considering something…”Would Audrey wear this?” and then go from there. It involved some hits and misses, but eventually I stopped questioning things and just went on instinct.

My personal style hasn’t changed much in over…well, a LOT of years! Simple shapes and solid colors in mostly knits, a great piece of jewelry, quality shoes and handbags. At 5’3″, I almost never wear prints, and seldom plaids, maybe stripes like a black and white tee. Trends have never interested me although I will venture into new colors now and then. This happened more because my gray hair allows me to wear colors I couldn’t before.

And one other thing: I started wearing Chanel No. 5 at age twenty-two and never stopped. It’s my fragrance morn, noon and night. A blind person would know it was me approaching as it’s probably permeated my skin!
