Coastal Eddy and The Marine Layer

It almost sounds like the name of a beach bar house band, doesn’t it? What it means is that we’re in that familiar weather pattern known as June Gloom: days on end that skew cool and cloudy, with even a bit of drizzle now and then. But Eddy Say Why The Long Face, Ace? The upside is being able to wear boots, lightweight sweaters and scarves for a few weeks longer.

This is one of my Weekend WIWarrior outfits. I decided with warmer weather on the way, if not in the immediate forecast, I needed a pair of jeans that are lighter in both weight and color. Darker washes are “safe” (e.g. slimming, not trendy) but since changing my hair color, the urge to add more light neutrals to my wardrobe has intensified.

I tried these boots on when we were in London and loved them, but dithered too long and missed the opportunity to purchase there (and get the VAT refund). Of course this elevated them to “One That Got Away” status, so I hunted them down online once we were back home. They’re very comfortable, and before wearing the first time I treated with Apple Garde’ to keep that grey suede looking good. Here in LA, I’ll wear these almost year-round.

Stepping out of my comfort zone with light wash jeans.

Have you stepped out of your style comfort zone lately? How did it feel?

Head to toe:

Earrings: kate spade, no longer available.  Similar.

  1. It does sound like a band, ah so that’s what causes the June gloom, for years I was shocked that JUne in LA could be such a damp squib. Great boots, suede and that colour would be trashed in our rain.

  3. I think this outfit looks great on you. I love the sweater. I’m too conservative to invest in trends, so I’m just enjoying the asymmetrical hemlines vicariously. I also like the lighter wash jeans. I had a surprising experience at the upscale resale shop where I deposit some of my clothes after cleaning out my closet. Among a large number of things, I took them a pair of my lighter wash jeans last week. (They had become too short for me.). They told me that they are not taking any lighter wash jeans! I was surprised. I’ve always liked them for summer. Once again, I agree with everyone else about your hair color–it looks great.

  4. You look great.

And I too circled the Dickers for a while, before settling on some black suede ones. I am now tempted to go back for the light ones.

  5. Great look on you! I think you were right to track those boots down. You clearly love them enough to drive the cost-per-wear right down.

Lord how I hated June Gloom when I lived in Pacific Gr(a)ve. Our nonsummers were a deciding factor in my getting out of there. I’ve never lived anywhere that I needed to always have a fleece jacket in my trunk 365 days a year.

  6. You look so very fabulous! I don’t want to look at those Dickers, since I own the Acne Pistols which, really, tick a similar box. But the Dickers look just a bit more everyday wearable with that slightly lower heel. Chic AND practical! Envy . . . 😉

  7. Loving this lighter palette with your blonde (fabulous) hair, Une Femme. The boots are divine. Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday!

  8. This palette is gorgeous on you – the jeans look great and I love the asymmetrical hem of your sweater.

  9. As you know, I’m way behind on my blog-reading, so will catch up on events, er, backwards 😛 I love your hair, and that sweater is brilliant.

Inspired by Vix, I’m trying to enjoy my clothes more and am wearing items I haven’t worn in a long while, including heirloom brooches. I’m wearing a cloisonne fish that belonged to my maternal grandmother, and am lovin’ all the good memories it invokes.

  10. The lighter color look very nice on you, I especially like the sweater. I envie your June doom, as all we have down here is high heat coupled with lots of humidity. Your clothes remind me of what I often wear in Northern Europe, and I enjoy wearing these ‘cool summerday outfits’.

  11. The sweater is perfect on you. I really like the lighter, brighter you. I would never have thought of lighter wash jeans. I am working on my closet too and I have vowed not to buy anything right now. I tend to wear beige or khaki pants in the summer. Hope that Coastal Eddy passes soon.

  12. Love the boots on you and so glad you got them. Yes, you’ll wear them year round here, I rarely change shoes!

  13. This sweater is a great design and looks fabulous on you! Attractive casual outfit!

  14. I love this whole outfit so much…it is fun and youthful. The sweater is an amazing fit! Great job!

  15. What a great outfit for June Gloom! I like the lighter wash on you. I ordered a pair of lighter wash jeans myself last week and although I liked the color of the wash the fit was wrong. I need to try again with a different pair.
Those boots are great – I was just in San Francisco recently and saw boots just like them everywhere. In SF, you can definitely wear boots year round. Where I live it gets too warm in the summer.

  16. I really love your style. I envy your wonderful weather. Still able to wear a light-weight sweater and scarf, 🙁

  17. what a great outfit, and I also like your turn to the blonde. I’d love to see the sweater and scarf with NYDJ pants in a terra cotta/ light rusty/ or mustard color.

  18. I have always been more of a fan of light jeans than dark. The whole colour palette, hair, sweater, jeans, boots and all, looks seriously brilliant on you.

  19. I stepped out of my comfort zone in a major way by wearing harem pants as well as leggings with a tunic. Both the pants and leggings were fairly recent acquisitions. Such ubiquitous items that terrified me, mostly because they looked horrible on 90% of women who wore them but looked awesome on the 10% that knew how to work the trend. After initial reluctance I’ve found a few interesting ways to incorporate them into my wardrobe and I’m very happy with that.

  20. Your instincts are so in tune – you look awesome in the lighter wash jeans. This whole look suits you perfectly. The blonde or the attitude that came with it, something, who cares what, is certainly agreeing with you.

  21. I like these clothes on you for casual wear.
No, I seldom hop off my comfort zone, because what I want is comfort.

  22. Love this outfit.

I have never understood the complaints about June Gloom. I adore it. And one of the overlooked positives about life in LA is the ability to wear suede without fear (of weather damage)

  23. I’ve never commented before, but I’ve read your blog for a few years now. I just wanted to say that you look SPECTACULAR with your blonde hair. And the jeans…really, I just want this whole outfit. I would love to look like you look in this outfit. As a 27 year old, I don’t know what that says about me, but holy cow do you look great.

  24. Susan, first of all, you look wonderful. Youthful, happy, svelte. I love the symmetrical sweater design and what’s not to love about jeans and boots? Love the blurry effect in the 3rd photo.
