YSL Glossy Stain, long-wear lip color
YSL “Rebel Nudes” Glossy Stain

Recently I snuck away for a couple of hours to do some Retail Reconaissance in the maquillage department. This is the first of my finds from that expedition.

I’ve never been a fan of long-wear lipcolor. I like the idea well enough, but the execution has always fallen short of the hype. I have never found one that didn’t flake or dry out my lips (which tend to be dry anyway). This was yet another of those products I was strong-armed into trying by a very insistent Sales Associate when all I wanted was to replenish my Touche Éclat.

Some long wear lip products have two steps: the color and then the gloss. This one is a single step, and goes from barely-there sheer color with a hint of sheen, to a very laquered look, depending on how much is applied. It stays on….and on….and doesn’t wind up on the rim of my coffee cup either. And here’s the kicker: my lips feel moisturized for hours, never dried out. The color (I’m wearing #103 here) is bright but not overwhelming. As with other long-wear lip colors I’ve tried, the trick is to apply and then let it dry…don’t blot or rub your lips together to blend. For more dramatic looks, use liner and a second coat. The sponge applicator helps it go on evenly. And rather that getting blotchy or flaking off it just fades slowly over time. To fully remove, use makeup remover.

YSL “Rebel Nudes” Glossy Stain has become my favorite lip color, as much for how it feels and lasts as how it looks.

Do you use long-wear lip color? What’s your favorite?

  1. I too have never liked long wearing lipsticks either for the same reasons you stated. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain is my go-to for long wear. It’s very light, gives just a hint of color (including “Crush”, which is the only red I’ve ever liked on me)and stays on darn near forever. I only have to touch up the darker color afer lunch.

  3. Thank you for reviweing this. I have been secretly stalking the ysl gloss stains and hoping one of my blog reads will review, and you did and sold me on it :). Thank you. Have a great weekend.

  4. Looks like we have all had previous unhappy experiences with long wear products. Glad there is a new offering, and thanks for the tip, Femme. Bon weekend!

  5. I wear CoverGirl Outlast in one of the nudes, “Naturalast”, when dining out. Also, I use Clinique All About Lips to condition my lips before and after, and find this prevents dryness, but then, have normal skin, not dry. I also apply a thin coat of the colour; it’s not a gloss, you only need a little.

  6. L’Oreal for me. It is not moist, I like that it stays put all day. Sometimes I have to use petroleum jelly to take it off at night. I’m a sucker for lip glosses so I reapply those. I look so much better with lip color, I like knowing that even if the gloss is in need of help I’ve got something there. I too go for a nude and then layer a colored gloss.

  7. Rebel Nudes – how apropos for the Moto-Jacket post! I threw out all my long-wear and just use Clarins and Laura Mercier glosses. I might give the YSL a try next time I’m at Nordstrom.

  8. As there are SO many brands to choose from, I have slowly turned over to the Chanel counter, as I like their colors and quality and I´m a snob ; ).
I have yet to find the long lasting lipstick. Nowadays what I wear is a mix of three colors the last one being a matte göoss.

  9. The cute sales gal at Nordstroms talked me into trying Glossy Stain last April, so glad she did. It’s definitely the best lipstick I’ve ever owned. Just purchased the “Rebel Nudes” Saturday and can’t wait to wear it.

  10. I stay away from long wearing just for the reasons you name – it’s just too drying, but I’ll have to try this. I’m currently in love with Dior Addict Lipsticks which are just lip butters, but they are my favorite formula to wear.
