casual chic

diagonal hem sweater, leopard scarf Well, that’s what I was aiming for, anyway. 😉

Sweater: Alexander Wang, no longer available, same style in Navy // Jeans: Eileen Fisher // Scarf: J.Crew from last year, similar // Boots: Etienne Aigner, several years old, similar // Earrings: Argento Vivo, similar // Bag: Balenciaga // Watch: Michael Kors

If this outfit looks familiar, it was actually inspired by this collage:

asymmetrical hem sweater, riding boots, leopard scarf

Slouchy sweaters are everywhere these days. But when one is short and curvy, “slouchy” can too easily read as “sloppy.” I think this sweater avoids that trap, mostly with a good cut and drape. Keeping the rest of the outfit more streamlined also helps.

Accessories for casual chic look

I love how this bag works to “un-fuss” an outfit.

Are there current styles you’ve hesitated to try because of your body shape? Have you found a way to make them work for you?

  1. Casual chic? You hit it…I love this look. I think it is important to get a slouchy sweater which is not too baggy and fits as much as possible. You did this hear. The sweater fits and the design of the garment is very flattering…I love it with the leopard scarf! This is something I would wear in a heart beat!

  2. I love slouchy jumpers but have to be careful, my big bust can make me look pregnant if I wear a loose top, so I have to have it slouchy but yet somewhat sleek through the middle – what Pam said!
I wish my winter wardrobe could be like yours, still the rain has stopped today – small triumph!

  3. You just gave me a way to wear a sweater I received for Christmas ! The neckline is a bit to open for my taste. A scarf ! Thank You !

  4. voluminous tunic tops are a bad look on my short frame so I try to find shapes that are closer to the body with no added detail. The scarf elongates your look too and draws the eye upwards and skinny jeans balance the look. You have got another great outfit working for you here.

  5. Lovely look! How did you tie the scarf? (I saw your recent scarf tutorials but this one seems to be different than those. Or is that because of the way it’s been photographed?) Thank you!

  6. What a great look on you. With a short waist and 8 shape (a rather abrupt transition from waist to hip with almost 10″ difference between), I find most tops are far too long on me, hitting at just the wrong spots. I deal with this by wearing more structured shirt-style tops for warmer weather. Sweaters and cardigans for cooler temperatures remain a challenge for sure.

  7. love this look, i too have to be careful with too baggy tops as i’m busty and short (5′ 2″). Love the boots, any suggestions on what boot styles are must haves for a versatile wardrobe?

  8. Très beau look! Jeune et décontracté – La touche de léopard est parfaite
I like slouchy but i would prefer to wear a belt if too slouchy –

  9. Well done! You’ve hit the casual chic beautifully! Yes indeed I’ve still been hesitating on the slouchy sweaters as I’ve mentioned before but now I’m sold. Thank you.

  10. This is a wonderful outfit! you look chic and beautiful. I too am inspired by your sweater….am short waisted and have to be careful or I will look round. Can be challenging to find a looser/casual fit that works.

  11. Definitely casual chic! My aim is to look casual chic rather than just casual – and I would love an outfit like this one. I think I’m slowly getting there, thanks to bloggers like you and Janice.

I tried on a peplum top in October, thinking it would look wrong on me, and absolutely loved it. I wear it with straight leg trousers (I don’t have any skinny legged ones) or a pencil skirt.

I must check out slouchy sweaters when I visit London later this month……!

  12. I love this outfit and could wear it to my casual workplace and not feel sloppy. Love the leopard scarf. Do you have any suggestions for affordable look-alikes? Would love to see a high-low of some of your great ensembles!

  13. I think this outfit looks right on and comfortable. The scarf pulls it all together with style. Beautiful bag and boots. i think you have done slouchy in a current manner. It works because all of your pieces are great quality. When clothes are poorly made slouchy can be iffy.

  14. Hi – just wanted to let you know that I love your posts although I don’t think I’ve ever commented because I receive it via email each day. You have great styles and ideas, thanks! Keep ’em coming.

  15. Yup, you did it. Just right. You really have become my effortless chic guru this year. I wish I had your understated coolness, but you just have to be born with it, I think! I’m trying fuller, more midi-ish skirts with shorter sweaters … which I love in the mags, but find them hard to wear, of course. Hard to find at all actually. I’m going to be doing some sewing this spring I think, and lots of alterations!
