Foolproof
No, it wasn’t actually raining when I snapped these shots, though it had been, and by the time you read this, will be again. I was being dripped on from the still-wet trees, however. No complaints, we need the rain!!
Weekday mornings, getting dressed is more often than not a grab-n-go process. I feel as though I’m finally reaping the rewards of building a simpler, cohesive wardrobe. Thanks to sticking mostly with a long-over-lean silhouette in mostly neutral colors, most of my tops go with most of my bottoms, and then it’s just a matter of choosing accessories.
Earrings: Pearlparadise.com // Scarf: Burberry, similar // Sweater: Alexander Wang, no longer available, similar // Tank (not visible): Eileen Fisher // Watch: Burberry, similar // Skirt: Eileen Fisher // Tights: Wolford (these really are all they’re cracked up to be) // Boots: Aquatalia by Marvin K (waterproof!!) // Bag: Saint Laurent
Do you have some foolproof outfits or silhouettes in your wardrobe arsenal?

I’m working toward having all my outfits be perfect and easy to grab…still got a whole closet of things that don’t fit the mold or that I need to make a decision about, though. I wish I’d known how oppressive the accumulation was going to feel, and just not spent all the money. Hindsight is 20/20!
I love this sort of casual style, it’s harder to get away with in our climate, I do it in spring summer then veer into my more formal clothes for autumn/winter.
Lovely boots.
Everything about this outfit is lovely-it all works so well together. Great inspiration…
Love this so much…the flow of the fabrics…the whole look. You are a great model for Eileen Fisher and the scarf is excellent.
Yes, I am getting there too – sometimes I start with a top, sometimes with a skirt, but it’s getting so easy. This look is lovely and the waterproof boots are both cool and practical. xox
Very pretty outfit and smart to have all your pieces coordinating. The asymmetric top looks great on you! I’ve been trying long in the back tops but I can’t get it right yet. You are inspiring me to keep trying. Outstanding bag and the boot looks great with your skirt.
blue hue wonderland
You look great! I don’t hear the rain outside now but the wind is howling! Stay dry and warm!
I love this outfit on you and I still crazy for that Saint Laurent bag! Have a good weekend and fun watching the Oscars (if you are)! XO, Jill
I love how you have mixed up the textures here, very subtle but effective. Great boots for wearing with tights and a skirt as they are not too chunky. Your handbag is tres chic….enjoy the rain I heard that California has been quite dry this season.
Great waterproof boots. And stellar usage of that Burberry plaid!
I admire how the wispy scarf softens and adds grace to the clothes. Beautiful bag; I can no longer carry those for more than an hour, if that- so ogle them on others.
I am a huge fan of the tights, narrow skirt and big loose up top. I feel sexy and put together in this type of look. Thanks for showcasing this and helping me decide what to wear today!
Love this look, i’m short too at 5′ 2″ how do you make this look work on the top without it making you look dumpy?
Love the Burberry scarf .. so light and pretty. I have a heavier Burberry scarf and find the thing a bit too warm for San Diego.
No rain, but super windy downtown San Diego
Monica.
BCBG makes these faux-wrap tops and dresses in a knit jersey with great colorful prints that seem to be my go-to summer wear.
I’ve been testing out the drape-y, asymmetrical hem styles during the colder months and am finding them comfortable and versatile. Thanks for the inspiration.
Here is another alternative to your fabulous A. Wang sweater….

It pays to keep it neutral. Nice boots!
Wish I could hire you as my stylist and wardrobe consultant !
Franchement vous ete tres eleguante vous avez du talon ……vous avez un gout et un styl tres superbe que je le trouve rare chez des femmes de votre age..paris
Lovely, lovely, lovely. Thanks so much for sharing this outfit.
You look fabulous and your efforts to build the right wardrobe for you are definitely paying off.
Well done!
Yeah, I really need to just copy you and I’d have such a better wardrobe!
I hope you’re not getting any damage where you are. I’m watching the news right now about all the mud and flash flooding.
You look sharp! I’m still having trouble not grabbing tops that I don’t tuck in. Or white with grey or black, BORING! Love the top with the skirt. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love this concept. fabulousafter40 talks about how capsules can reinvent your wardrobe. I’m trying to do this, but it’s tough to change my mindset.
Thanks for the inspiration.

Hi – I don’t leave comments usually, but just wanted to let you know how much I love your blog. I follow it so get it in my email everyday and read it each morning but rarely leave comments however, LOVE your outfits. You have such a great style sense for the 40- 50+ ish woman. There’s a bit of a cool vibe, to your outfits, but they all look like they’re comfortable and actually can be lived in. I love this grey outfit, I wear a lot of black, blue and grey and this look is great. And, by the way, I love your blond hair style. Thanks!
Big fan of Wolford tights, one of the few makes that don’t drive my legs mad with itching. However, this year M&S have brought out a range of tights very similar and in great colours. Wolford are still my go to tights.
I love the idea of easy grab and go pieces. I’ve always shopped and worn a steady range of neutral colours – black, brown, navy, white etc. However this year especially for Spring/Summer I found have I have purchased Prints, especially in dresses. Is this not a good way to go?
Jennifer, see Vivienne Files today. She illustrates beautifully how that neutral capsule actually makes it easier to incorporate color and prints.
Hi… just found your site and I really am enjoying it. I love the short boots and would like to try a pair. I’m a little afraid… I’m 64… but I’m going to be brave. I look forward to seeing more.

I second everything that Claudia said!
Beautiful outfit. I too find a neutral palette of garments that drape mixed with garments of structure works with ease and makes my mornings much more ‘enjoyable’.
You look very elegant, The scarf seems to be the cheery on top.
I can’t say I have a capsule cohesive wardrobe, I have quite a few brights. I like to play with colours.
Thank you for your nice comment and for linking with Très Chic Style Bits!
This burberry scarf is such a great touch to the outfit. I would say I do not have a cohesive wardrobe but my go to is always a pencil skirt, a top with a blazer.

Lookin’ good! I love the asymmetry of your sweater. I always give the local Wolford shop the long eye when I pass by. Maybe some day I’ll go in!
Thank you for linking up! You have a fabulous blog and style. Have a wonderful day!

I envy this sensibility of yours. You always put together beautiful outfits, and grab and go must be so satisfying when you look as consistently great as you do. Every piece a winner, and you just look brilliant.
You personify classic elegance! This is such a clean, lovely look! Beautiful!
So happy to have discovered your blog!
