A Hint Of Spring

slim cargo pants + heels, waxed anorak jacket

If you’re not familiar with Madewell, I’ve heard the brand described as “J.Crew’s cooler sister.” (It’s owned by J.Crew.) The styles have a bit of the J.Crew preppy vibe, but without the precious or twee (mostly). This brand reads to me as a little more laid-back, rough-around-the-edges, slightly bohemian and definitely tomboy-friendly. The prices are mostly a little below Crew’s, though they do have some “collaboration” items with other brands that run a bit higher. I’ve had two pieces from Madewell in the last couple of years; both seemed to be of good quality for the price.

I popped into the local Madewell store over the weekend to check out the new stuff, and saw a lot of fun, easy-to-style pieces, many that you can wear now and into Spring and summer. I especially like their take on color…a little “washed” or earthy, and not quite as primary or neon-in-your-face as J.Crew.

Here are some of my favorites from the current collection (use arrow keys to scroll through):

  1. Mildly frustrated with J. Crew (all brands). The quality seems to sink each year; I was in one of their stores recently, took my time looking. Thought the fabrics, finishings and overall feel of the merchandise was poor. The jeweled and donegal-fleck wool sweater I bought last winter, though pretty, pills appallingly, and a t-shirt I just returned had lumpy seams. Maybe just bad luck?

  2. I have a couple of cotton casual scarves from Madewell and have purchased a few as gifts. I was delighted with them. I pop in to Madewell whenever I am in Boston. It doesn’t hurt that my favorite restaurant, Sonsie, is right next door. I guess I am a little tired of J. Crew and find it overpriced.

  3. There is a Madewell shop in our local mall. I’ll have to pop in and take a look. Meanwhile, I am enjoying an Everlane cashmere v neck sweater as it is 25 degrees in Dallas today!

  4. Thank you for the showcase! I’d not heard of Madewell, but have already been on their site (thanks to you). I’m always looking for a website where I can get accessories or statement pieces that set off my current wardrobe, and better yet my friends don’t know about!

  5. I enjoy “window shopping” at JCrew and similar sites as well as some of the sites where pieces cost $300+ just for a simple shirt for inspiration only. At JCrew the bottoms fit but none of the tops do. I simply can’t wear clothes designed for women without breasts as clearly defined in their models and fashions…

  6. I get ideas from Madewell, J. Crew, etc, and then order nice fabric and make them myself. (And they’re made much better!) If you want good quality without paying outrageous prices, learn to sew.
