La Détox

Sometimes after we’ve been on vacation, it takes a while to re-set eating (and drinking) habits back into healthy territory. In France especially, it’s easy to get into the routine of lovely bread with each meal, a second glass of wine, some cheese after dinner. It’s fine for a couple of weeks, but when those habits linger once we’re back home, not so good. I’ve begun visiting the local Sunday farmers’ market weekly for fresh fruits and veggies, and cutting back on the cheese, bread and wine.

When we were in Paris last month, one of my first stops was the Kusmi tea store. Tish is always recommending their teas, and I wanted to try some for myself. They were handing out samples of this “BB Detox” tea and I liked it quite a lot. So now I’ve replaced my late afternoon coffee with a mug or two of this brew. I don’t know if it really “improves your skin’s appearance by boosting toxin removal” but it’s delicious and refreshing, and helps me feel virtuous enough that I’m motivated to keep working on my other healthy habits.

Do you find it hard to get back into routines after a vacation?

  1. Although I resume my exercise routine upon my return, I do miss the walking walking walking EVERYWHERE ! It just seems so much easier when there are sights to see and interesting way points along the way! I think this is why we can eat as we do on holidays, and must adjust when we return!

  2. Not only after vacation, but after a stressful or chaotic week. I just experienced a topsy turvy two week period and realized this morning that I hadn’t done any yoga, ate on the run (including fast food) and generally paid no attention to what I was doing.. I was happily reminded by the large number of cars parked near the town park last night that the Monday Farmer’s Market has begun. When routines are broken, I tend to stray from mindfulness which usually keeps me pretty grounded.

I will look for some detox tea at our health food store. Seems like a pretty good and tasty way to get back on track.

  3. We recently returned to the UK from a short break in Paris. We stayed in an amazing apartment near marche d’aligre which is a truly great market for both food and ‘fleas’! Check out Onefinestay for some gorgeous homes in Paris, usually owned by artists, musicians, photographers in which you can stay when they’re out of town. One of the welcome gifts was a tin of Kusmi Earl Grey tea which was very refreshing after pounding the avenues of Paris. I totally agree that it’s hard to get back on a healthy eating track after such fabulous French food, so the BBDetox would be a welcome help.
Thanks for all your recommendations btw, I am now also the proud owner of a bracelet from Metal Pointus, bought after a stroll round the Marais on a beautiful Sunday afternoon!

  4. Oh gosh…the deadly trio..bread, wine and cheese. Love them all but they don’t love me back. How easy it is to sip just that one more glass with that last sliver of …whatever. My husband and I say that we are each a bad influence on the other! The worst for us is getting away from the regular exercise routine as well!
Good to have that break from the norm though…as you say…it makes the norm feel “virtuous.”

  5. Story of my life! I find myself in an everlasting cycle of “detox” after vacations, and find it ever so difficult recovering from bad eating habits while travelling and creating distance with “banned” food like bread from my every day diet. I do however admire your ability to grab the bull by it’s horns and doing the “detox” tea. I am suffering post long weekend diet disorder…. :):) and will follow your example!

  6. I think it is a little tough to get back into the swing of things after either a vacation/trip or just endless hectic weeks, like I’ve been having here! I try to be gentle with myself and take a few extra days to get back on track.

  7. I find that I actually don’t tend to gain wait on vacation, even though I indulge in tasty food & drinks; I think it’s a combination of the extra walking, and less snacking, that offsets the meals. You would think, then, that when I got home I’d cut back my snacks and increase my walking……..but……..

  8. I find it extremely difficult to get back into routines after vacation. I love my job but I find that I’m always depressed upon return. The better the vacation is, the harder it is for me to get back into the routine. After about a week of being back, I’m fine. But that first week is really hard for me.

  9. You must have heard me as I just walked in the door from over two weeks in Italy and France, commenting to my husband that I may not remember how to cook. We began with lots of fresh seafood in Venice, and finished with waaaay too much duck and foie gras in the Dordogne. Salads, here we come!

    1. I always feel the same after not having to cook while on vacation. I have found it easier to go very simplistic for at least a few days and even do take out or go out to eat to ease the withdrawal of no work.

  10. On Tish’s recommendation I have been trying various Kusmi teas – which I found at Surfas (in LA) – a restaurant supply store.

  11. I thought I had been overly indulgent on my trip to Italy – gelato, wine, pasta – but actually lost 2 pounds. It must have been the walking. I do find it difficult to go back to my more spartan diet but it is a must.

  12. There’s also a Kusmi shop in London (Marylebone high street). Bought a sampler pack there and Detox is the one I’ll buy a full size of. Love the fragrance of it as much as the taste.

  13. Do I find it hard to get back into routines after a vacation? I’ve worked at this ever since, as an international flight attendant and purser, I realized that I had to find ways to lessen the quantum disconnect between my flying life and my life at home. Now, 30 years later, when I return from a vacation (whether it was travelling abroad or backpacking in my state’s mountains), I try to retain the happy, healthy, and energized but relaxed feelings generated during the vacation’s explorations. Among other things, that means minimizing the “routines” involved in my daily life and continuing to do (with necessary modifications) what (or that which evokes what) I most enjoyed during the vacation. Doing this is by no means easy…it takes planning and imagination, as well as (for me) the freedom to work in the setting I chose, but it’s worth it, as it allows me to integrate much of the best (or the spirit of the best) of my vacation into the best of my daily life.

  14. Yes, I find it hard, and also I feel very deprived for the first few days back. I don’t usually gain weight in Europe, but for me it’s not all the walking because I exercise much harder here, and eat and drink more there. I think there’s something weird in the food here, even if it’s organic etc. Maybe the soil? Everyone who comes to this country gains weight – it’s a mystery that’s still not solved.
