Some Things Old, Some Things New

White jacket + light wash jeans

One of the things I love about Pinterest and style blogs is finding great outfit ideas that I can re-create with items already in my closet. These pumps are 8 or 9 years old, the tee is a couple of years old, and the jeans are from last year. The jacket is a few weeks new. After I bought the Eileen Fisher linen jacket in navy and have been loving (and wearing) it so much, I picked up the same style in white. I’m finding that it works best and avoids that “catering staff” look when I wear with something lighter on the bottom.

Earrings: Beladora (similar style but with emeralds here) // Jacket: Eileen Fisher // Tee: Eileen Fisher // Jeans: NYDJ, similar // Shoes: Ferragamo, similar

These shoes pre-date even this blog. They’re Ferragamo’s. At the time my goal to invest in a pair of classic black pumps, with not too crazy of a heel and that weren’t too narrow. These are a “C” width. I hadn’t worn them in quite a while, and had forgotten that they’re actually quite comfortable. Not walk-all-day-in-Paris comfortable, but wear-all-work-day-including-running-errands-on-lunch-hour comfortable.

Do you have a white jacket in your wardrobe? How do you style it?

  1. Love your white jacket with the light jeans. I wish I still had my Ferragamas and Bruno Magli’s. Both were great shoes and very comfortable. Makes me wonder why I parted with them in the first place.

  2. I used to love Bruno Magli…when I was in my twenties and thirties! I wish I had kept one pair. I have seen many great Eileen Fisher jackets on sale lately. You look great in your black and white!

  3. Love the wood watch with the black and white. So interesting that a natural material actually makes the outfit edgier.

  4. Wow, I really like this! Usually not a fan of faded jeans (I wear mine when doing yard work and on the most casual days) but with the white jacket and the black tee – perfect. I have all the components except the black tee, so I think I might pick one up today and put this together to wear out to (casual) dinner tonight. Thanks for the idea!

  5. I love the outfit, but also like the idea of using Pinterest for outfit ideas. I was wondering if you could explain how you use Pinterest for inspiration. Do you search for a specific thing, like white linen jacket? Or do you just have certain people you follow, and look at a lot of photos? Since I find your blog so much more useful and relevant than a fashion magazine, I assume that Pinterest could also be useful…. somehow!
    Thanks!

  6. Yes I had a white jacket, would wear it over all black outfit .. I felt very EDGY which amused me
I’m sort of fresh scrubbed all-American looking so “edgy” amuses!.

  7. That outfit is cool, casual and classy! Like the shoes, that jacket is going to be a timeless piece that you’ll wear for years.

  8. I never know what to wear with a white blazer and always end up feeling like I’m wearing a lab coat. Your outfit does look great on you, and white should be really versatile, but I think I only like it over black? Love the faded jeans, have never been a dark rinse fan.

  9. I have a couple of short white linen jackets, both of which are styled more like jean jackets than they are like blazers. For some reason, jean jackets suit me better. White linen allows you to wear a jacket even when it’s pretty warm, because visually it looks light, wispy, often translucent.

Let’s see. Today I wore one of them over a tissue thin button down shirt, which is light teal with a white “squiggle” print. With it wore a shortish dark rinse denim skirt, slightly A line. Brown flats, blush colored bag. White watch, white Judith Ripka carved mother of pearl pendant. Italian twisted steel link bracelet, slim sterling snake chain bracelet.

I love white jackets in unexpected color combos. Sometimes wear mine with a rustic dark green cotton skirt and olive and white tiny flower print cotton shirt. Load on the pearls in the form of Honora chunky pearl charm bracelet, etc. Olive or bottle green and white mixed together feel oddly fresh to me in the summer…

  10. Brava! Gorgeous! I have the same EF jacket and love it, it also washes well. But I do relate to the “catering staff” or “lab coat” issue — and I have the additional problem of needing to not to look like an MD (I’m a PhD, not MD!). To solve this I have found that the vertical color column look is best: light jeans with grey or very light blue drapey linen tee. I also have the worn light jeans with a halter top or cold shoulder top b/c the white jacket makes it possible to wear a very informal top like that and still look polished enough to wear to work. For shoes I’ve found that all of these white jacket/jean outfits look good with a camel or light cognac shoe.

  11. A white jean jacket has been a favorite of mine for years, and I had a short white cotton trench coat that I wore till it fell in tatters. I have mostly white hair and wear big silver jewelry, both of which seem to do well with white outerwear. White shirts, on the other hand, seem to be a disaster. Your wooden watch is spectacular! How wonderful to see a wind-up watch in which you can see the workings.

  12. Yes, madame, that’s how to do it. Doesn’t get any better than this outfit for casual elegance.
