Une Femme Économe: Karen’s Picks

Yon-Ka Lotion PS

Karen is a woman with her ear to the ground when it comes to style and beauty, and always has some fabulous products on her radar. She also has a thrifty nature, and looks for the most bang for her beauty buck. The first product she shared (and gifted me with a full-sized bottle!) was this Yon-Ka Paris Dry Skin Toner. I can’t believe I wasn’t familiar with this brand, as judging by this toner, it’s wonderful. The formula is alcohol-free, contains essential oils, and has a wonderful invigorating fragrance. Spray it on after cleansing and before the rest of your skin care routine. You can also use to freshen makeup and add a bit of glow. I like to spritz on a bit when I get home from work just to recharge my batteries and soothe skin that’s been in air-conditioning all day.

Revision Intellishade matte

She gave me some samples of this Revision Intellishade SPF 45 Matte
tinted moisturizer recommended by her dermatologist, which I liked very much. It has a decent percentage of barrier sunscreens, and goes on very nicely. If you need more coverage, it also works well under foundation. The finish isn’t shiny, but it isn’t what I think of as “matte” either… just very natural looking. The color blends right in to skin and avoids that ashy look that barrier sunscreens sometimes cause.

L'Oreal Glow Renewal Oil
LOVE this stuff!!

Another product she pulled out of her bag of tricks was this wonderful facial oil from L’Oreal. After trying this I went right out and bought some! It’s very lightly fragranced, wonderfully moisturizing, and really does make your skin glow (not an oily gleam). Use instead of or in addition to your regular moisturizer. I’m tempted to try the eye cream from the same line when my current bit runs out.

Maybelline 14 Hour Lipstick

I haven’t tried this yet, but Karen loves Maybelline 14-Hour Lipstick. It looked very nice on her, very satiny.

Have you tried any of these? Do you have a reliable source for the latest news on beauty products?

  1. I have just started using the LÓreal facial oil, which is an excellent product – especially for its price compared to similar facial oils! I really like the sound of the Yon-ka toner, which doesn’t appear to be available in Spain at the moment, however we are going to Toulouse and Bordeaux for my birthday at the beginning of September, so I’ll look out for it then!

  2. Hi Susan: I love the Revision. For me it’s so easy to use: it’s just enough of a ‘foundation’ for me; I don’t have to fuss with layers of different products (first the serum, then the moisturizer or sunscreen and then foundation/concealer). I can just put on my vitamin C serum, then Revision and go! I love it. So far I feel like it looks the most natural on me than any other tinted sunscreen, tinted moisturizer or foundation.
I make my own facial oil 😉
    I’m intrigued by the Yon-ka toner…..
    thanks for these tips! Sally

    1. LOVE Yonka. My esthetician, trained in France, introduced me to Yonka 22 years ago. She and Yonka have kept my skin glowing and healthy.

  3. Last week, I purchased a tube of Bobbi Brown’s latest sunscreen (spf 50) face base. I really like it–it disappears into my skin with no greasy feel at all. It is a perfect base for my light foundation. 4. haven’t tried any but have been curious about facial oil for a while. it sounds really nice. my hesitation is, I’ve always had oily skin. Today at 62, my T-zone is still oily. I love using Argan or Moroccan oil on my hair after shampooing but my face…? Tell me more.

  5. I love the Maybeline 14-hr lipstick. First heard of it in one of Lisa Eldridge’s tutorials. Densely pigmented, I really rub it into my lips when applying, lasts a long time wighout being drying. Also just bought Revlon’s Colorbrust lipstick in Watermelon you mentioned a few days ago & like it, too (although a first glance the color is shockingly bright). But, one swipe gives a nice sheen on color. Thanks for the tip !

  6. I love the Maybelline 14-hr, too. It is the only one-application long wearing lip color that stays on my lips after multiple cups of coffee and water. It is not too drying, although sometimes I use a gloss over it. I like the color Pout on Pink.

  7. Love the Intellishade. Great coversge and SPF. It has a yellow tint so it’s great for reducing redness.
