A Taste Of Burgundy

Burgundy accents

Whether you call it Burgundy, Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet, Oxblood, Maroon…it’s a color that seems to make a fresh splash every Autumn, and is hailed under whatever moniker the fashion editors (or Pantone) have chosen for that year. There’s a reason for that: it’s a great color that works well with almost any neutral, and its earthiness can ground a colorful outfit (I especially love seeing it paired with bright pink). But it can be a hard color to wear, especially near the face where it can turn harsh and unflattering. Adding Burgundy as an accessory or accent is one way to incorporate this sumptuous color without angst.

Do you have any burgundy in your wardrobe? How do you wear it?

  1. Talbots is showing a bit of burgundy and red together in their fall catalog. It’s a striking combination. This is the first of their catalogs that has inspired me in a long time.

  2. When I was in high school and the “collegiate look” became popular in the middle 60’s, we called it CRANBERRY. I had a John Meyer of Norwich heather CRANBERRY matching wool A-line skirt and cardigan which I wore with a pink oxford shirt. Now I never wear the color because it is not flattering on me at all. However, I do have ONE piece in the color which is the down Lands’ End vest that I’ve had for years and keep in our camper. I DO love that piece and feel OH-SO outdoorsy when I pair it with my plaid flannel shirt, jeans and boots!

  3. Not a color I like in clothing (for me anyway) but I like it for shoes and bags. Will get a wine lipstick for the winter as well.

  4. It is a favorite of mine. Perfect with gray, black and ivory. One of my best nail color shades as well. Very flattering. It does depend on the undertones either reddish or brown.
And….one of my best loved regions in France!

  5. Oh I adore this color. Probably the only shade in the red family that is flattering to me. I recall oxblood penny loafers in high school with a wool wrap skirt and burgundy cable knit turtleneck sweater. Looking forward to wearing this lovely color soon! Cool weather, please!

  6. I noticed that Celia in Last Tango in Halifax was costumed in a burgundy crew neck sweater or top underneath her basic khaki trench coat. That was not a terrible combination for her, less harsh than a black top would have been. Since studying the color seasons, I can’t help but analyze the wardrobe choices for everyone on that show. Now when Celia wears her lovely light aqua cardigan, it’s perfect for her, but I think she can handle a bit of burgundy too. Blacks and browns just wash her out.

Sorry, I’m on a tangent. Does anyone else do this while watching shows?

  7. I do love burgundy (I hate the word oxblood). I have fond memories of a handbag I had in high school that was burgundy suede with a burgundy leather cutout. I have a burgundy suede jacket now (secondhand) that looks great with denim or any blue. And those Clarks booties are like my TOMS. I just wish the heel was lower, but they look so cool!

  8. Great post on a great color. I usually use burgundy as an accent color and really love it for nail polish. Once the temperature drops a bit more I will be getting all my burgundy polishes out. Let the autumn manicures begin!

  9. Having whittled down wardrobe, no, I don’t wear this color any more. But I have owned some nice oxblood shoes, once or twice, over the years. Very versatile they were too.

  10. I just call it wine-coloured and everyone understands! Love this neutral and always have at least one pair in my shoe wardrobe for the winter months because it goes with everything. I’ve been eyeing a new wine-coloured bootie and wish the shoes I want i.e. those which combine classic style with comfort. weren’t so expensive. But they will last! Currently I have a pair of very low-heeled wine-coloured pump, very basic and so well-made they have been serving me since the fall of 1998 when I bought them at the beginning of a new teaching year in Italy. Regular application of neutral shoe polish is their friend.

  11. I have a pair of burgundy (wine) cords and they are great for the color without it being near the face. My winter work bag is also same color, patent leather. I like it with camel, pink, black, grey, navy and it is AMAZING with leopard!!! 🙂

  12. I love that family of colours. It suits me beautifully unless there is too much brown in it, as in maroon. If you don’t think you look good in it, do try one that has more blue undertones or simply a dark red. I have at least two bérets in wine-cherry shades.

  13. Burgundy leather has been a favorite thing of mine since the 70’s. I’d love to own more of it if finances allowed. Shoes, jackets, handbags, etc..But I also love it in accessories, like tights and scarves. It is a neutral to me. A special neutral. 😉 If I’m going to wear it near my face, and my glasses are this color, I prefer it to have a touch of brown in it, rather than a bluish wine color. That to me is more harsh for my complexion but looks fantastic on dark haired ladies..

  14. I love this color and have already started wearing it this year. I found two great pieces at Ann Taylor Loft. A longer, silky blouse and a short sleeved lace tee. Love the watch and nail polish!
