put on some lipstick and pull yourself together

Estée Lauder Lips

Post sponsored by Nordstrom. All opinions are my own.

I’ve always been a lipstick girl. I grew up watching glamorous women deftly apply a splash of color, and have worn some form of lipstick almost non-stop since the age of 12, when I would dash to the girls lavatory at Middle School before my first class, lean into the cloudy mirror and hastily apply a contraband pale frosty pink to my lips. (Fourteen was considered the minimum age for obvious cosmetic use in my family.) Some of my favorite lipsticks over the years have been from Estée Lauder (All Day Lipstick in Cinnamon, I still miss you!) and the line continues to offer a variety of formulas and colors that will boost your mettle during trying times.

Unlike so many designer spinoff cosmetics lines, Estée Lauder has always been first and foremost about beauty. Estée Lauder herself got her start working for her uncle, a chemist who created and sold lotions and beauty products, and in an era when women were not prominent in business, turned a high-school job into an empire. And now her granddaughter, Aerin Lauder has added a modern spin to this classic beauty line with a range of cosmetics and fragrances. I really like the colors in this Aerin “weekend” palette which would work well for those of us who like a more natural “no-makeup” look.

Right now Nordstrom is offering a gift-with-purchase with any Estée Lauder purchase of $45.00 or more.

Estée Lauder Gift With Purchase

This is one of the better GWP’s I’ve seen lately, as it includes four travel-size skincare products, as well as two lip colors. Nordstrom carries the full line of Estée Lauder skincare, beauty and fragrance products, including the Aerin line. I love shopping the Nordstrom cosmetics department; the Sales Associates are always so helpful. Shipping is free, as are returns.

  1. I had the privilege to work for the Estee Lauder company itself in the seventies when Mrs. Lauder launched her Apple colors collection to help promote the roll-out of New York City’s “Big Apple” slogan. Not only was Estee Lauder a genius in the beauty industry, she was also very civic minded and extremely loyal to those who helped her along the way. The Apple color collection was a huge event / promotion all across the country. New York City Major Abraham Beame & Houston’s Mayor Fred Hofheinz were among those at the gala event Mrs. Lauder held in Houston that year. She was a very forward thinker and Aerin has done an outstanding job of filling some very big shoes. This is probably THE best gift with purchase I’ve seen this year in any of the beauty lines. I haven’t worked for the company for many years, but I can say with confidence that you can never go wrong with Estee Lauder.
    Sam .

    1. Sam, I still have an Estee Lauder lipliner pencil in Candy Apple Red, it’s just a little stub now. I’ve searched for a comparable replacement, but so far, no luck.

  2. The image of a woman applying lipstick is iconic. You see it in movies and advertising. A lovely symbol of femininity.

Estee, her company and family have deep roots in New York with a major headquarters right near my house.

  3. Bring back Estee Lauder Garnet Ribbon — the best color and best lipstick. I’m still searching for a replacement after, oh, 12+ years.

  4. “Aerin “weekend” palette” – wonderful colours!!! Pity I can’t wear it, for I sweat a lot when it’s Summer … (typing from Brazil)

  5. That is a good gift…and $45.00 is not hard to spend. I think a lot of companies are doing better gifts now. I remember back in the 80’s when the lipstick in gift-with-purchase was usually orange…or some shade that never suited me. I always save my cosmetic shopping for promotion time. I haven’t bought a cosmetic bag in years as a result.

  6. I simply cannot get lipstick to stay on my lips and have tried every technique out there. So when I really need it to stay put, I wear CoverGirl Outlast. You would not wear it every day, it can be drying- but for a restaurant meal or half-day meeting when you don’t want to jump up and re-do lipstick, it is the only one that stays on. Otherwise I share the love for Lauder lipsticks, and they smell wonderful. What I really miss is the beautiful non-plastic lipstick case, so hard to find these days. They used to be accessories in themselves.

  7. Thanks for the tip re CoverGirl Outlast– sometimes it is just so necessary to keep your lipstick on. You’ve probably tried the old trick of filling in the entire lip with your favorite lip pencil, then putting your lipstick on over that. You can get extra hours of color out of that, but it also can be a bit drying.

Since I have that tricky, extremely pale, transparent skin, a lot of lipsticks look too garish and have that little-girl-wearing-her-mother’s-make-up look. The best color I’ve ever found for me is Revlon’s “Pink in the Afternoon”. It hits the sweet spot of providing enough color to be enhancing, but not enough to be harsh. And even though it’s an ever so slightly “warm” pink, it looks good on people with cool, “blue-y” undertones to their complexions! A bit of a chameleon…

  8. I never leave the house without lipstick. Even when working out. It makes me feel prettier, and puts color into my face that I rather fancy. I’m heading to Nordstrom’s for this special TODAY!

  9. I’ve worn the same color on my lips for years, the brand has changed but not the color.I’m currently wearing Carolina, by Bobby Brown. I’m attracked to the same color, so no matter which brand I buy it ends up being the same color, even whenI try to go for something new!

  10. My lips absorb lipstick like a magic trick. Fifteen minutes and it’s completely disappeared. Even lip stains that other women claim last for days top out at maybe an hour on me. I wish it did work out as it is such a lady thing to me.

  11. If I were stranded on a desert island with only one cosmetic it would definitely be lipstick!! Any shade will do! Not only does it instantly brighten my face but it keeps my lips youthful, conditioned and protected from the elements…..Love your blog – thanks for sharing this offer!

  12. I remember the days when you could buy lipstick in a very nice case (metal) and then purchase refills when you ran out. Wish they did this nowadays. I am addicted to lipstick and have way too many. Only yesterday I “had” to buy Autumn Leaves (Nars), being inspired by all the beautiful short-lived foliage here.

  13. I made life simple by tossing the expensive overdone lipsticks- chemicals, animal testing, and more chemicals…- and picked up Burts Bees lip balm in Hibiscus.. Use it on lips. and swipe across cheeks!!! Done and quite lovely. The money I saved I use to have facial massages to help my skin be healthy so I wont need foundation!! So far so good. IMHO nothing looks worse than a mature lady all caked up and overdone.

    1. I love Burt’s Bees too, but use a much darker shade, as my lips are quite dark naturally. Mine is the plum or the fig. I haven’t needed a really “dressy” lipstick of late; forget the “natural”, European brand I used for that.

  14. Definitely a lipstick girl (and before that, balm, and gloss– it’s always been about the lip product where make-up is concerned!). If I find two shades (which I switch up seasonally) I feel suit me I stick to those rather than “play the field”. I’ve spent too much money doing the latter. When I grow to love a particular shade it is always discontinued! So I grieve. And move on!

  15. another thing I forgot to say about the Burts Bees- I can get it ANYWHERE and practically so cheap I can buy it all the time!! I really do think alot of the cosmetics industry is pompous and way overpriced and hyped just to part folks with their money. Sure I can hear everyone say how much pigment is in their 40 dollar stick, but it wears off the same as my 6 dollar one!!

  16. My go to summer lip color for several years now from Estee Lauder is “Stay Coral”… it’s not too orange, not too bright; it’s kind of a perfect nectarine shade. I only wear it from spring to summer, usually along with a tan hand bag. On the rare occasion that I am wearing pink or purple clothing, I will go to a cool hued lip color. In the fall, I go to deeper, richer hues. This is what works for me.
