You don’t have to be Ned Stark to know that “Winter Is Coming.” 😉 And with this week’s Polar Vortex, for many of you it’s already here. If “winter” where you live means being bundled up to set foot outdoors day after day for weeks or months, a coat that’s stylish as well as practical makes that prospect just a little more bearable. I was so impressed with Nordstrom’s selection of coats; city elegant, country casual or something in between, it’s a great time to shop for the best choices.
Several years ago, I was periodically required to travel for my job on very short notice. One of those trips was to New York in early December, and I had no winter coat and no one to borrow from. With just a few days until departure, I dashed over to Nordstrom and was able to find a warm, gorgeous black camel-hair coat; Nordstrom even altered the sleeves for me in time. Walking between my hotel and the office during that cold New York week, I was SO glad to have that coat!

November 11 was a balmy +10 degrees here in Ottawa. But it snowed out west and we don’t get above zero here on the weekend. Daily power walk will be a speedy one! And please, please let me NOT have to take out my down coat yet! I love it but not if I have to wear it for five months!

You forgot the hats …and gloves, and boots. The coat is only half the battle!
I live in Montréal (Sue B in Ottawa is not far from me). Have one wool coat (a classic duffle) for early winter and our super-short spring, but real cold requires a down “puffer”, and the big advantage is, they can be washed.Your picks are appealing for late fall, but not for our conditions. By December, everyone looks pneumatically alike- but it is a necessity. Sold my cashmere coat, which though pretty, was neither washable nor warm enough.
Love that Loro Piana long coat so much…wish I had the funds…it is gorgeous! It’s even cold in South Texas!!
It was 30 degrees at our farm in East Texas when I got up this morning. I came from somewhere other than home and wish I had warmer clothing out here! Fortunately, I do have a light coat and a sweater. I agree that the Loro Piana coat is lovely.
Does anyone have any suggestions for warm coats (wool or maybe even a puffer type) suitable for busty women? I tried on a few coats at NYC’s Century 21 discount store the other day, and the only one that fit my chest was a size 12. I am not a size 12 normally! More like a 6. It was traumatizing. (And the rest of the coat was too big.)

The cut is slim, so it’s flattering even for a puffer, and it is WARM. The neck zips up high, the hood is detachable, it has soft, fleecy inner cuffs to keep the wind from blowing up your sleeve, it reaches below the knee. I hope this helps you.
Wow, this is so funny! Since I wrote my post, I saw another Eddie Bauer coat in a comment on another blog (Girls of a Certain Age), ordered it and am wearing it! It is the Sun Valley parka, also a slim cut, and the Medium fits me fine–I called customer service for advice because the bust would have dictated a large but a large would have been too big elsewhere. So now we are both Eddie Bauer fans!

I heartily agree with Duchesse. Toronto gets pretty cold, the wind can really whip off the lake, and a down puffer is the way to go. In addition to the warmth, they’re lightweight and help to mitigate the overall heaviness of boots, hats, earmuffs, mitts, scarves, longjohns, etc.
I’ve been shopping for a fall/raincoat for some time and finding the current shorter styles really annoying, especially if you’re on the taller side (5’8″). Not enough coverage at all! At or just below the knee would be perfect. Guess I’ll have to wait until the style dictators change their ideas.

Although it is ridiculously cold today here in Houston TX, I still can’t justify buying a coat…probably ever. I have a leather short coat that is warm enough for nearly everything here, plus it’s a car-centric city so we don’t walk outside much. Having said that, I have been seriously coveting beautiful wool winter coats in the stores. Fleurette at Nordstrom, in particular, are beautiful and just FEEL so wonderful (and not ridiculously expensive). Dillards also has had a brand called Katharine Kelly, which last year had a beautiful full length cashmere coat with a fox fur shawl collar. ***swoon***
But I don’t NEED a coat! Wish I lived where I could justify buying a pretty coat, but didn’t need a heavy-duty utilitarian puffer coat. Oh well……
