the moto jacket, refined

Eileen Fisher long moto jacket, French Kande necklaces

A few of you asked to see how the Eileen Fisher long moto jacket looks open, so here it is. I’m wearing the Petite Small, which is my usual Eileen Fisher size. I’m very happy with this jacket; in addition to being a travel-friendly knit, it has such nice shaping and details! I love the subtle dark zippers that don’t compete visually with jewelry.

I’ve styled it casually here but have also worn as an office jacket and will show you that styling next week. Are jackets an important part of your wardrobe? What jacket styles do you prefer?

  1. That is great take on a moto jacket and I love the length. I often wear jackets when I teach or to meetings and conferences. During the spring and fall mildler weather I have one on all the time. I have various lengths, fabrics and textures ranging from cropped to my Y’s heavy cotton jacket that goes right to my toes. I like having the variety. Sometimes when wearing a a shorter jacket I will wear it over a longer white shirt so there is a kind of layering effect. I also have jackets with a range of silhouettes from boxy to very fitted. They are such a versatile piece that can be worn with various lengths skirts as well as many types of pants.

  2. Love the necklaces and the white tee under—love how the waist is defined even though the jacket is somewhat boxy.
We also love a jacket over a dress to pull things together please check out our alternative neutrals post on

    1. Patti, thank you! I’ve really come to rely on jackets to pull a look together, and this one’s definitely a keeper.

  3. Very nice! The panel to the right of the zipper makes the jacket hang properly when it’s worn open. And, I love the way you’ve styled it.

  4. Saw this in the original post, loved it and ran to Nordstrom to try it on. It looks fabulous from the front, which is a nice sturdy ponte knit, but the back is that very thin, clingy jersey. What’s up with that? Designers/manufacturers have been doing this with tops for a while now (again – why? Is it cheaper to make?) , but this is the first time I’ve seen it in a jacket. So unflattering.

    1. Hi Lynn, yes the fabric on the back and sleeves is a lighter weight than the front panels but I would not describe it as flimsy or clingy. To me these lighter panels are “a feature not a bug” as they keep the jacket from being heavy, stiff and boxy, and IMO help it to drape nicely. We all have our preferences, though, and I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you.

    2. This jacket did not work for me either, alas. I ordered it in Small and the back bunched weirdly and gave me bulges–and I am not big in the back. Then I tried a Medium, and same thing. Really, really unflattering. Weirdly, the front (and I am much bigger in the front) was fine in both sizes. A friend thought the jacket was too long for me and maybe that accounted for it. I never order Petite sizes (I am about 5’4″) but maybe I should in Eileen Fisher? Because I am short-waisted and have longer legs, so maybe the jacket just hit me at the wrong places?? Dommage because I really loved the style.

  5. I really liked this jacket but in the UK the price is the same as in the US but pounds not dollars . It isn’t that I wouldn’t pay that amount for that kind of jacket but I feel as if I am being exploited . So not for me .

    1. Wendy, I’ve heard this about US lines that become available in the UK. (J.Crew, for one.) It would seem to be short-sighted, as I imagine they’re losing out on sales there.

  6. I think you always look so terrific and would love to interpret your looks for a mildly elegant 70 year old. Any suggestions? I don’t have an affinity for jeans.

    1. Carol, thank you. I’ve been playing with this jacket in some work outfits (no jeans), and will have something up next week.

  7. It is such a lovely jacket! I really like unlined jackets of medium weight material, especially for work trips. I’ll bring (wear) a black suit but pack in a couple of light weight sweater/unlined jackets. Maybe a jacket in black/cream hounds tooth plaid, a second one in green/black speckle. That can take me through a week of “suits” especially if I intersperse the black suit with scarves and colored tops.

  8. I am smiling EAR-TO-EAR right now… I stumbled onto your “Scarf Videos” — You are too cute to watch! Gave me some really good ideas how to wear my scarfs. Thank You!!

  9. Very nice jacket shape, and I too love how you’ve accented with jewelry! I tend to wear jackets that have a variation on a jeans jacket “cut”, while not being an actual jeans jacket. I’m about 5’3″ and have small shoulders and wider hips, so these work for me. I love blazers too, but for some reason, many look too stuffy on me, esp. if they are heavily “lapel-ed” or have very angular lapels. Have a few in twill, at least one in a cobalt blue knit that I love. Other colors are stone, blush, pale blue, olive, orchid. They go over almost everything I own!

  10. The proportions and fabric of this jacket are much more wearable than the classic black leather moto.Really enjoy how you have softened yours with the jewelry and light shoes.

  11. This jacket looks beautiful on you! I love its understated elegance and fit. I must say that your hair is looking fabulous, so whatever you’re doing is working.

  12. Love the jacket and will be buying it (by the way, Nordstroms does have it in white) – I notice the tee is a crew neck (I think) – I thought you mentioned you had given up that style. I looked at it and thought it was quite a tight, high neck – thoughts?

And of course, you look fabulous – love it!

    1. Hi Kristi, Thanks! Actually this tee is a shallow, wide scoop neck. It’s more open than a crew, not as deep as a V. For me a “crew neck” is one that covers the collarbones completely.

  13. You look great, head to toe! Can you please specifiy the brand & specifics of the lipstick you are wearing? It gives a nice glow.

  14. Well, now you’ve done it; I just received the Eileen Fisher waxed cotton moto jacket this week, and you show up in the longer length rendition, which I also love! Just when I thought I’d completed my ‘capsule” jacket wardrobe you share another winner with us. Grrrr. You look fabulous (of course). Merci, I think.

  15. Hi Sue,

I’m a longtime reader and love your style! Your posts on travel outfits and making the most of a suitcase capsule have inspired me to make the most of not just my travel clothes, but my wardrobe in general. (I hope you’ll document your Amsterdam plans soon!)

Also, the first picture in this post is a keeper — you look great!

  16. My jacket just arrived in the mail today. It is so comfortable! I often wear cardigan/waterfall sweaters for the comfort value, but this will definitely add more polish. I love how you styled it with jeans and I look forward to your post next week for additional ideas. Thank you so much for introducing me to Eileen Fisher.

Also….would you mind giving your height for a reference so that I know the sizing is right? You mentioned that you wear a petite and I ordered it in regular (I’m 5’7″). I’m not usually considered a “petite”, but I’m still trying to understand how Eileen Fisher sizing works. Thanks! : )

    1. Hi Virginia, I’m so glad to hear you like the jacket! I’m 5’1″. “Petite” sizing usually means shorter length, shorter sleeves, and (sometimes, not always) narrower shoulders.

  17. Imogen, I love your style and look forward to your pictures with what you are wearing. I wear jackets a lot. They cover up midriff bulges for me. However they can look very formal so am needing other more casual styles to suit a 70+ age. I want to get out of my
style rut and the recent 31 day change your look was motivating. Margaret Elizabeth

  18. Sorry about the wrong name – was looking at Imogen Lamport’s page and must have gone to your link. Une femme d’un certain age. You look a little like her. Wondered why everything was in French but went ahead anyway!!! Maybe it is my age! I enjoy your posts and pictures too. Margaret Elizabeth

  19. I have this long moto jacket and love it–sort of. I’m having terrible trouble with the zipper. I’ve been wearing it unzipped because only one track of the upper zipper moves. The other stays put. Since it will be getting chillier here in NYC, I’d like to wear it zipped at times. Have you had any issues with the zipper? Any tips on how to make it work? Thanks!

    1. Hi Mary, I’ve heard that rubbing a bit of bar soap or even a graphite pencil rubbed along the teeth can sometimes help unstick a zipper. I haven’t had this issue with mine.
