crushing on blue

While Marsala may be Pantone’s “Color Of the Year” for 2015, I’m predicting that variations on these blues will be the more popular choices when it comes to clothing because they are so wearable.

Blue plays well with neutrals as well as many other colors, and there’s a shade out there that will look gorgeous with just about every skin tone. From soft and subtle to deep and bold, there are some crush-worthy hues now hitting the racks for Spring. Because blue is so compatible, it’s a good choice for accessories like bags and shoes, and of course, scarves.

I don’t remember when blue dropped off my radar as a preferred (or even much considered) color my wardrobe. I had to have been pretty young, because I remember as early as age 8 declaring green to be my favorite color, and cannot remember having much at all that was blue in my closet anytime after that. (I’m not counting denim, which made its appearance as anything other than equestrian wear only once I was in my teens.) With only a slight deviation for a few neon brights in the 80’s, I’ve mostly been a Neutrals And Earth Tones gal.

But like the quiet boy next door, who you never really noticed until one day you saw him walking by and realized he was “OMG so cute”, blue suddenly has my attention.

(And speaking of boys-next-door, I was always on #teamBrian.)

Does blue play a major role in your wardrobe? What are your favorite shades?

  1. I love the classic blue…for me I really prefer the richer, saturated tones. I like to pull out the turquoise in my accessories.

  2. I am with you on this one, marsala is not my cup of tea. Blue is one color, i will wear when I want to step outside my usual black and white. In fact recently it has become “ok” to wear blue with black. I absolutely love navy and midnight blue. In fact if they made as many pieces of clothing in midnight blue as they do in black I would probably wear that color all the time. I love the video!!!

  3. You have such beautiful taste! The only missteps in any of your posts always involve the Covered Perfectly tops, which don’t look like anything you would actually wear. (sorry)

  4. I’ve always worn blue, and as my hair is becoming more silvery, I’ll probably depend on it more since some of my other neutrals like oatmeal, beige, camel, no longer look good. Blue is such a great year round color too.

  5. pastels wash me out but i love the more saturated blue tones, especially cobalt and navy. there is a blue i’ve been seeing for spring that is bright and deep but has no green in it and i’ve already bought a blouse in this color. not sure what the name of this color is but it’s lovely.

  6. I love chambray blue (whether the actual fabric is chambray or not). The challenge for me if finding the right articles of clothing for me in this color! I think blue is flattering on most people. I’m not a huge fan of the saturated blues. I do have a jersey EF dress in a saturated blue and it is not my favorite. I also love navy.

  7. Blue is a gorgeous hue. So reminiscent of nature (e.g., oceans) and attractive. Your metaphor of the boy-next-door is funny!

  8. OMG Susan, I’m crushing on blues also! I’m favoring the teals and aquas but I also look the pastel blues and navy. Oh jeez, I love them all actually: the blues and blue-greens. Absolutely love them. Like Shybiker, I’m reminded of the sea….

  9. hahahaha! the only blue in my wardrobe is a cobalt blue leather bag by Brahmin which I adore. I don’t wear blue.

Green is also my favorite color. I wish Pantone would pick a color I like…

  10. Blue is my favorite color and I wear it regularly. My tastes range from midnight to sky. I wear all hues except baby blue – to girly for me. I love the Eileen Fisher pieces in your blog, especially the stripe scarf. I think it needs me!

  11. I see blue everywhere in the stores right now. I bought a navy trench last fall and three navy knits this past weekend for a trip to Amsterdam in May. It does perk up my complexion more than my (favorite) black staples. I’ll never give up black, but it’s nice to have some variety. Love your posts and taste! P.S. also bought two Lipault carry ons for us – thanks for bringing them to my attention.

  12. I’ve always loved blue in many shades and it plays a large role in my wardrobe, along with grey, white, and black. I never did get the memo of not pairing blue and black and have always done it. So glad I’m not committing any current fashion faux pas. You’ve chosen some beautiful things here.

  13. I have some blue shoes and Hermes scarves with blues which pair together easily with my core black and great basics. I love the Breton tops in navy blue stripes too. Green is my favourite colour too but I don’t have much of it in my wardrobe. You are such an inspiration Pseu!

  14. I’ve always loved blue. Baby blue was a favourite but now I find that too much of it washes me out. – or I should really say, my enigmatic personality washes out the blue! Ha. I’ll be glad when blue is the Official Colour. Too much oxblood and marsala for my taste. I think they chose marsala so retailers could keep on selling on the oxblood they had left.

  15. I wear blue a lot–especially French blue, steel blue and periwinkle. I used to tease my Dad that powder blue was his best color, and have found that, oddly enough, powdery and baby blues are the colors I get the most compliments on when worn near the face. Most people with “blue” undertones to their skin look good in a number of blues.

Favorite color combo is blue and green. Which leads me to the aquas and turquoises, more favorite shades and very complexion-friendly!

  16. Sometimes I wear something in a bright turquoise, but that’s the closest I’ll EVER get to blue. Except jeans, even then, I much prefer a very dark, muted blue. I would feel terribly uncomfortable wearing anything in a clear blue, just thinking of it makes me shiver.

  17. I’m like Rita, except for denim (which is quite green), I dislike blue, especially baby blue, turquoise and navy (find the latter the colour of stuffy). I love deep greens, and they are so hard to find. Funny, I love plum and wine to cherry reds, but there is something about the “marsala” colour I dislike.

On the other hand, I LOVE that Munro slingback bootie sandal. It looks very comfy to walk in, despite having a bit of a heel – and perfect for urban cycling. I would plump for the red, though, or if not the violet. Wonderful that it comes in all widths.

  18. I have NEVER liked blue. I’m a brunette with brown eyes, and I am most comfortable wearing & filling my home with warm reds, golds, even burgundy or olive. Having said that, I just painted my front door a dark gray-blue, and I LOVE IT!!

  19. As a former brunette with brown eyes I avoided the baby blues, too. Now with my silver hair most blues – cobalt, icy pale blue, blue has become a go-to for me. Navy is replacing much of the black in my wardrobe as black is looking pretty harsh against white skin with blue undertones and very silvery (okay, almost white hair).

  20. Have replaced much of the black in my wardrobe with navy over the last 12 months, and lighter blues to accessorise. Navy looks smart but not as plain as black, IMHO. Green is my fave colour, but more for homewares.
