inspired by flowers

This month’s By Invitation Only topic is “Flower Power,” and how our style is inspired by flowers. I think of my Grandmother every time I see camellias; they were her favorites. She also loved her scarves. You probably see where I’m going with this…

LOVE that scarf!

If the Fashion Weeks street style sightings were a hint, Harper’s Bazaar (March issue, above) and WhoWhatWear have gone on the record: you can safely pull your printed silk scarves out of storage and begin wearing them again.

If you’re a little hesitant, my suggestion would be to start with a sheer or soft, lightweight scarf in a floral pattern. Square or oblong, small or large, it’s all good. I’m always drawn to floral prints, and find that scarves are the easiest way to add florals to an outfit.

Keep the arrangement simple, not too fussy. A just-threw-it-on look keeps a silk scarf looking modern.

  1. Just love flowers – in my home and in my closet. My scarves never went into storage! I hunt for vintage ones whenever I’m in Paris and my favorite is covered with peonies. Can’t imagine spring without them – or camellias. Such a lovely bloom. Happy Spring to you! XO

  2. It’s so lovely how flowers remind us of loved ones…my Mum’s favourite flower was the daffodil and I can’t see a bunch of daffodils without thinking of her…the camelia is so pretty and who doesn’t love a silk scarf 😉
    Have a great week!

  3. I’m usually not much for prints, but I spotted some Stuart Weitzman heels in a flower print (and then saw an ad for some even more expensive brand with something similar), and now I covet them.

  4. Susan, spot on as usual. I love scarves, wear one almost all the time. I think they are so versatile and add such interest to our ensembles. Especially when we’re casual. So happy you were able to join us this time.

  5. Spring has sprung here and the sight of green shoots pushing their way through the earth brings a smile to my face as do flowers in the home. Flowers on my body though, do not !!!! …. pas bon !!! But, I don’t mind introducing the floral trend on a scarf or a bag. There is always a way to be on trend ! XXXX

  6. My printed silk scarves have never been in storage – please, please tell me that nobody imagines that a beautiful scarf should not be worn because of some completely arbitrary fashion trend . . . I wear my scarves because they are pretty and because they compliment the rest of my outfit, and I fail to understand how their prettiness or complimentarity (I hope that’s a word) can lessen or increase with the prevailing fashion winds. They are accessories, folks, and their basic shape and function does not change over time, as do shoes, pants, dresses, etc. Does anyone really chose against wearing a beautiful scarf because someone has deemed it unfashionable?

    1. Marsha, my references to the winds of fashion were meant to be tongue-in-cheek. Of course we should wear what we love and what makes us happy!

  7. Was just looking at the Lands’ End catalog. Maybe they are not known for stylishness, bit there are several prints I fell in love with….now need to decide whether I want the shorts, pants, tees, or sheaths!

  8. Thanks for reminding me! I actually DO have a box of scarves put away! What fun… Some of them are springy florals that appeal to me again. And yes, scarves do go out of fashion– I can attest to that after looking through this box. I have some gaudy bright ones from the 80s, some little squares that must be tied tightly at the neck (tho I suppose I could repurpose them tied to a purse handle), some faded red, white and blue ones that look like 60s stewardess costumes. There are gauzy hand painted silks that must be from the 70s. Pierre Cardin and Adrienne Vittadini– anyone remember them? Some of these old Echo scarves look like Hermes, such beautiful prints! I’m not one for saving things, but scarves take up zero room. This is one shoebox full of treasures from my mother and grandmother. I wish you reminded me before I invested in that expensive St. John floral scarf ( ; Though I have already worn it a dozen times!

  9. Just pulled out my scarves. Haven’t worn them for some time. Any chance of you refreshing us on how to tie them?

  10. Oh, I talked about camellias in my post too! But not for such a lovely sentimental reason as you have. They are such a lovely, old fashioned flower. And are currently now just beginning their season here in Melbourne, as we head into Autumn. I love scarves – have a rather embarrassingly large collection of them – and agree they are a marvellous way to introduce a little flower power without appearing too frou-frou.

  11. Your website is frankly so gorgeous that I forgot what I was going to say! My goodness. Ah, flowers! Yes, love them in life but not on me…unless I happen to be in SE Asia somewhere then a frangipani behind the ear? No problem… heehee 😉
