covered and cool

linen 3/4 sleeve top
Eileen Fisher

I’m a big fan of gauzy tops for warm weather travel. This one in linen is on sale now…

Here’s one with long sleeves. The beauty of these tops is that they aren’t meant to look crisply pressed, so wrinkles are just part of the look. And these can be hand washed and will dry in a few hours on a hanger.

  1. I love this combination, Sue. Both the top and the joggers would be really versatile. I’d wear it without the scarf and with flat sandals… great summer travel outfit! Especially since we’re finally getting some warm weather…well…today, anyway.

  2. I have the windowpane top you show in the photo above and I really love it. Toss on over a tank and I feel covered but still airy. Has been my go-to top so far this summer. Don’t care for the addition of the scarf though – too busy with the self-tie IMO.

On a related note, how is it that Neiman’s (and most of the other big department store websites – Saks, Bloomies, Nordstrom) manage to style their EF photos to look positively awful? The same/similar item on EF’s site always looks fabulous – her photo stylists are superb! Maybe EF should exercise some quality control on what her largest retailers are doing to her clothing!

  3. I love this look, Susan, but I just had to get rid of two(gasp! so expensive!) Eileen gauzy overlayers because they were so badly snagged, to the point of snags turning into gaping holes. Both pieces were just one season old. I’m not very hard on clothes–these types of garments are just incredibly delicate. I’m always attracted to them, but I may have learned an expensive lesson at this point. This is a beauty though.

  4. I love gauzy tops. The more I feel a need to cover myself to protect the sun each year, the more I am drawn to them. They not only make sense for me, they are gorgeous, and they feel divine.

  5. And so, on this hot Saturday, I was browsing scarf organization and your blog articles on scarves showed up….somehow from there, I ended up on l’affaire cashmere and “somehow” I managed to buy a scarf…I so much enjoy reading your musings and while it has turned out to be an expensive relationship, I’m loving every minute of it! Besides EF, who are your other, let’s say 2, favorite designers?

  6. The gauzy tops are great to wear, but either hand-wash, or put them in a mesh bag and machine-wash on the delicate cycle.

  7. Do you have an Eileen Fisher Company Store near you? I visited mine today and I left with three items: the slim silk crepe pant, a long sleeveless tunic top, and a black shift dress all for $417 (which for me is a hefty bill). I will be traveling to France in late August and all of these items are going with me! I generally can’t afford “full price” EF items but I am hooked on the company store (limiting myself to 2-3 times per year). There is a sales woman there who knows me since I’ve visited the store many times over the past 3 years. I told her about your blog and she had heard of it! I can’t wait to put all of your packing advice into practice for our upcoming trip.
