summer black & white

how to wear black in summer

I happened to be wearing this last week when I read a fabulous post from Patti at Not Dead Yet Style about holding out for those items that make you swoon. And I had to smile, because I felt so good in this outfit. It hit my Style Sweet Spot with comfort, movement and the “zing” that black and white always gives me. (Coco Chanel was on to something…)

Yes, a sweater in summer. It’s linen, and handles going from warm, slightly humid conditions outside to sometimes over-enthusiastic air conditioning inside. I will concede though that unlike most women my age, I run cold. When everyone else is fanning themselves, I’m reaching for a sweater. The tank underneath is linen too, so everything breathes and adjusts to temperature fluctuations. Another thing I love about linen is that it has a weight and swingy-ness that cotton just doesn’t have. Those are the pants that I wore pretty much non-stop during our visit to Hong Kong last year, made from a tencel fabric that I love for both the movement and lightness. (Tencel is made from wood pulp, so yes it breathes too.)

love these French Kande necklaces…wait until you see her Fall collection…
Eileen Fisher block heel sandals
these sandals allow for air flow to keep feet cool, but provide enough visual weight to balance the rest of the outfit.

Do you wear black in summer? Do you find it difficult to maintain your style in the heat?

  1. I do wear black in the summertime–and live in Dallas where it is very hot. I enjoy my Eileen Fisher jersey dresses. They are sleeveless (!) and I like that too. I’m not one of those older women who is obsessed with her upper arms being perfect. I’d rather be comfortable. I also have an EF jersey dress in midnight blue and another in marine blue and still another which is gray. Like you, I think Eileen Fisher has some great basics.

  2. Fabulous swoon-worthy look, Sue, and thanks for the mention. I love a light sweater even in Florida summers, for the frigid indoors.

  3. I love this look, too. I like Black in summer as well as linen!!
Linen Black pants with white cotton tank and linen white tunic ,with coral necklace.
Black simple dress with see through white cardigan.!
Yes,here is very hot,but I like white and Black. But,my favourite in summer is white 🙂

  4. Yes, most of the time, year-round, black and white is my most “feel-right” look. Cut Loose is another of my favorite brands, and I just got a black, cotton/linen, midi, asymmetrical hem skirt that is my go-to summer basic – cooler than leggings, more comfortable (and flattering!) than shorts. Of course, here in Seattle, it’s SUPPOSED to be cool-ish in the summers, but not this year! 🙂

  5. It’s a beautiful look and in spite of trying to add more color to my summer wardrobe, I still favor the greys, blacks and whites.

  6. I do wear black in summer, usually a slightly faded, charcoal-y version. And I do like those EF pants and your shorter haircut. Hope you had a fantastic 4th July weekend!

  7. Fabulous look. I wear black year round although I do have trouble sometimes finding things I like for summer.

  8. Black is stylish all year round, especially when matched with gorgeous earrings like those

  9. Yes, I will wear black in the summer but actually I try not to. I just like the change of pace (and wardrobe) in using other colors. I find I’m wearing a lot of indigo these days, which is new for me. I do wear bright jewelry, either necklace or bracelets almost every day. Of course, in this intense heat and humidity, I try to stay with linen and yes, I go sleeveless..as another commenter noted. Too bad about the arms! but I want to be comfortable!!

  10. Love this look. Black year round for me, too. In summer I try to bring in colour with accessories. EF makes great basics – I’ve got a lightweight linen knit cardi from past seasons, which is invaluable. Great over linen or silk tanks. Folds up to nothing so perfect for travel. I bought a white, zip front paneled short cardi/jacket from NZ brand Euphoria earlier in the year – it has revolutionised my summer wardrobe. Usually avoid white, but it is so fresh and perfect combined with black.

  11. Great inspiration and style. I do wear black in the Summer, but I also adore some color. We live in Texas and our Summers are just dreadfully hot. I have actually gone to wearing dresses more and more, I find them to be so flattering, comfortable and cooler than slacks. I enjoy a great dress with a smashing pair of sandals and tanned legs-either with the sun or a self tanner.

  12. Love this. Black and white is my staple wardrobe. I live in the Middle East and always have a jacket or wear a sleeve even though 50 degrees outside. The air conditioning and cultural awareness necessitates this look.

  13. I must admit I don’t care for black on myself most of the time. Colour is more “me”.

I do find that summer has me pairing down my complicated over accessorized style into something more basic.

    I love your double necklaces.

    bisous

  14. This is such a chic look. I do think that the less complicated the look in the summer, the better. I too run cold and my husband is always teasing me because I run around the house with a cardigan or hoodie on!

  15. I like the look very much. Alas, Eileen Fisher is much too expensive for me and, as a freckled, auburn-haired Celt, I don’t look good in black and white. This makes shopping for basics more of a challenge as I look for flattering garments in navy, brown, ivory, tan and green–but I do keep your posts in mind as I shop. You have a knack for pulling together stylish, timeless, flattering outfits, and I love your posts about travel wardrobes.

  16. I wear black any season, but I find that certain mossy greens are also a great “neutral” in the summer as they go with all the greenery … up north that is. I know that alas it is mostly yellow and brown in Southern California this year, and you’d have to go up to Seattle or Vancouver for an expanse of green.

  17. I love this look on you! The graphic punch of black and white is stunnig with your hair. The accessories are terrific. Edgy with fun. Thanks for sharing with us on #stylefocus.
Black in summer? Yes. Black is always a staple in my wardrobe.

  18. Perfect casual summer look. And yes, I wear black (mostly with white) all the time in the summer. In fact as I’m typing this I’m wearing black dress shorts. A woman can never go wrong while styling with black, right?

  19. I avoid wearing black pants in the summertime, because if you’re wearing them while driving on a sunny day, it’s easy to have the tops of your thighs sunburned. When I lived in Colorado, I kept a large white napkin in the car, to cover my legs if I word dark pants.
