warm weather workday

Eileen Fisher tencel pants, white jacket

Dressing for the office in warmer weather is always a bit of a challenge. Granted, our office on the casual side, but if I have meetings on the agenda I try to include some structured elements like a jacket and closed-toe shoe. (Within those parameters though, I’ll allow for some rumples and comfort.) Lightweight jackets like this one are lifesavers during summer months.

bag | bracelets | pants | shoes (similar)

This jacket is from Eileen Fisher, from last year. I kept hoping they’d include more linen jackets in this year’s spring/summer collections, preferably in an off-white or bone, but alas ’twas not to be. The tunic top and bag were Nordstrom Anniversary Sale scores. The tencel pants are from this season. They are so comfortable, have a nice drape and are also machine washable!

Do you have a formula for summer office wear? Any items you wish you could find again, perhaps in a different color or cut?

  1. So glad to see you featuring Ann Lightfoot’s jewelry. Former classmate, talented designer and lovely person!

And your NAS bag choice was lovely.

  2. I am really struggling with what to wear in the office during the summer. The idea of summer skirts or dresses is nice, but it’s generally too cold because of air conditioning. Typically I stick to a lighter pant and jacket. I also keep a scarf in my bag because I never know what the quality of air will be like in some meeting rooms.

  3. With summer sales in full force, could you give an update on how much you liked and wore the Eileen Fisher sneaker sole sandals that you bought for your Las Vegas trip? I just bought a pair and am not sure about comfort. Interested in your opinion. Many thanks.

    1. Hi Chris, the sneaker sandals have really become my “go to” shoes for weekends. They are comfortable all day long. The strap across the toes was initially a little stiff but softened right up after a couple hours of wear. Next summer when we visit Europe these will definitely be going with me!

  4. Your look is superb, Sue. The “surplus”/olive pant with the black and white pieces is the perfect combo for an outfit that can transition across seasons. I tried on the limestone pant in XS, definitely needs hemming. Did you need to hem them, and did you keep the side slits?

    1. Hi Beryl, thanks so much! I’m not sure which are the “limestone” pants you’re referring to?

      1. Nordstrom’s had the pant you are wearing in the limestone color (beige), but not the surplus (olive green). I tried on the XS regular because they do not carry this pant in petite, and the fit is OK, but I’d sure prefer a petite. The conundrum is how to hem the pant. Any suggestions? Were you able to locate a petite? Thanks, Sue!

        1. Got it. I’m not an expert on alterations, so will suggest taking them to a tailor who should be able to give you options. Mine are Petites in the Surplus, and the length was just right.

  5. My office feels like a freezer so I always have a blazer or cardigan on hand. I wear a lot of sleeveless tops that’s helpful when I am heading out to lunch. Love this neutral look, I have been on a look out for a good white blazer that doesn’t look like a lab coat.

Would love to see you Thursday for TBT Fashion link up.

  6. Here in Dallas, where today is supposed to be 103 degrees, hot weather office dressing is a real struggle. I admit, today I am attired WAY too casually. I appreciate the suggestions here.

  7. My formula for summer office wear, and for office wear in general, was to pursue a career path that allows me to have my main office at home and to minimize the number of meetings (in my case, hearings) I have in the summer. Before that, I chose office space in a building that had openable windows (for breezes) and an adjustable heating/air conditioning unit in every room. When I do have to preside at a hearing in the hot summer months, I wear a light dress or skirt (much cooler than pants), a light jacket when necessary and never, ever wear panty hose. And if I don’t know the room at which the hearing is to be held, I take a fan! (Very necessary today and tomorrow, with temperatures reaching 100°in formerly-temperate Portland!)

  8. You did very well for the office. Lovely ensemble. I don’t have many problems with office dressing. There is enough in my closet and there are no firm rules.
When I was in Vancouver I bought two Eileen Fisher items because of your recommendations. I love quality silk stuff. Indeed quite expensive, but if they last, as you say, they are worth it.
