when inspiration strikes…

skinny jeans, grey tee

earrings (similar) | cardigan (similar) | tee |  jeans | bag  | bracelet (similar) | shoes

Sometimes I’m inspired by a look styled by an online retailer, and realize I have most of pieces already in my closet to create something similar. In this case, inspiration came from this outfit on Net-a-Porter featuring a Valentino burgundy bag:

valentino rockstud bag
The bag is cute, but too small for my everyday needs.

Nothing extraordinary here, just a nice Polished Casual look, taken up another notch by the bag and shoes. That I can do! OK, so maybe I look a little more rumpled than the NAP model… 😉

burgundy bag, satchel bag

I’ve had a burgundy bag on my wish list since last fall, but hadn’t found The One. After purchasing and using my black Brahmin bag for a few weeks now, I’ve become a fan of the brand for the combination of good looks and practicality. This is the “Duxbury” satchel in the color Black Cherry. It’s deceptively roomy, and holds not only my wallet, phone, cosmetics bag, keys, travel-sized hand lotion, various small bits and bobs, but also a full-sized iPad! And with room to spare.

croc satchel, shoulder bag

The shoulder strap adjusts so it can either be worn crossbody or doubled for single-shoulder wear as I’ve done here.

black loafers

The more I wear these Everlane loafers, the more I love them.

I truly appreciate all of the comments and feedback on outfit posts (all posts, actually) including those that express disagreement or dislike of what I’ve presented. We all have different tastes, budgets and preferences, and I would never expect everyone to like everything I publish. Sometimes I experiment, and some experiments are more successful than others. I’ve so rarely received truly nasty or disrespectful comments, and am grateful for that, given how many people seem to feel the anonymity of the internet is a free pass on meanness. (I’ll continue to delete those very rare nasty comments, as I want this to be a positive space for all of us.)

I’d like to ask for your feedback regarding outfit posts. They seem to be popular based on traffic and amount of responses, but I’ve limited how many I feature as I wanted this blog to be about more than just my style. My intention, since I began blogging in 2007 has always been to write the blog about style, beauty, lifestyle and travel that I’d want to read, but also that others find helpful and entertaining. So I’m asking…would you like to see more outfit posts? Fewer? Is there a particular topic you’d like to see featured more often? Thanks in advance for your input!

  1. I understand exactly what you are asking…I tried to pull back on outfit posts and I went for awhile doing one a week. I was asked to go back to more than one…though I am uncomfortable with it, it seems that is what the readers want! So bring on more…I love to see your style and would love to see more. And the purse it gorgeous!

  2. I love the outfit posts, so yes, more please. My favorite was an all light colored outfit. It looked so good on you I wondered why you don’t wear light colors more often.

  3. I’m new, so I feel that I can’t comment on the frequency of past outfit posts.
I have enjoyed this post. I’m not very imaginative and it helps to see what looks nice on other ‘real’ women.
You should do what you feel is right for you, otherwise it will feel like a burden
Keep up the great work! xx

  4. First and foremost, thank you for all your outfit posts, you have no idea how helpful you have been in assisting me to find my style! I’ve learned so much from your blog and it’s all been good. I’m getting ready for a river cruise in mid to late October and your 15 Piece Travel piece has been a life saver! You have a classic style and present extremely well, in my opinion and I’m sure others feel the same about the blog. I’m a young 67 and still in good health and shape and yet I don’t want to dress like I’m trying to be a teeny bopper, so keep the outfit posts coming. Have a marvelous day!

  5. Please keep the outfit posts coming. You might get style ideas from sites you look at, but I get mine from you!

  6. Love this casual chic look, Sue. Net-a-porter is great isn’t it? I use that site for inspiration a lot. I love your outfit posts, seeing how items look in real life is my favourite. But continue to do what inspires you to write…travel, outfits, whatever strikes YOUR fancy.

  7. Your blog is one of my favorites. Please keep the outfit posts coming. Your packing tutorials and travel posts are great.
    Sarah

  8. Love the outfit posts. My style is similar to yours, but needed to be pulled together. Since I’ve started following, the compliments just keep coming. And I knew you would become a Brahmin convert. Once you have one, more will follow. They’re just the best. And made in the USA! I do also enjoy your commentaries on various subjects. So , for me, the mix of posts you’re doing now is great!

  9. Although this is my first comment, I have been following you the past year. You inspire me to take a good look at what I have and utilize those invested classic pieces. Your look today is classic, casual, yet polished. I have a Brahmin tote from 10 years or so ago and like the combination of leather that is black and brown. Brown is my base, although black follows second. Can’t get away from black its just how I coordinate the right colors to compliment my skin tone. Love the longer cardigans, especially it elongates a short waist. Keep it coming, I’m visual so outfit posts keep me thinking and I get the “Aha” moment in my own closet!

  10. please don’t change anything. i am a regular reader of your blog and i enjoy the mix of topics, travel advice and outfits.

i agree that it is a great feeling to see an attractive outfit in a magazine or online and to think, “why, i have those pieces and can easily duplicate that look!”

  11. I love your outfit posts, especially since you are not afraid to highlight the same garment in different ways. I also love your opinions on the utility and versatility of items. The “Duxbury” bag not only fits your ” various small bits and bobs, but also a full-sized iPad! And with room to spare.” Without these personal musings, I could be looking at any mass market website.
The travel writing and planning and packing are wonderful as well. I enjoy reading about your process almost as much as I enjoy doing it myself!

  12. J’aime the outfit posts, but also the travel posts, and the moments that you mention work, family and budgeting. It is nice to read that the glamorous woman in the photos works within the same constraints as me.

  13. I don’t post often but check in everyday. Your blog is perfect just the way it is. A little bit of everything, fashion, beauty, food, travel, family and of course the animals. What more could we ask for? Even though our style is different I appreciate all your effort and the sharing of how to wear new things and keep trendy for our age. Don’t let a few people make you second guess what a well rounded page you manage to generate almost every day. Great job!

  14. A WORD OF WARNING. for years I carried loads of stuff around in my shoulder and cross body bags. When I developed severe pain in my shoulder and neck the physiotherapist I consulted did not have far to look for the cause! She advised me, among other things, to use a back pack for everyday use. We do need to consider the strain we put on our bodies by carrying weighty bags. I am now free of pain – except when I look at my lovely handbags, now rarely used.
Love your blog. Your phrase ‘Polished Casual’ just sums up what I aim for

    1. Hi Ruth, thank you and that’s a great point to remember! I usually try to keep what I carry in the bag to a minimum and the weight down, but last week when I had to shuttle back and forth between “campuses” for meetings it was so convenient to be able to get everything into one bag. For walking between offices and my car it was no problem.

  15. I rarely post but read daily. Love your blog the way it is, with a bit of everything. I really enjoy your outfit and travel wardrobing posts the most though. Keep them coming!

  16. Love your blog as it is now. I appreciate the time and thought you put into your posts and will be very happy to read the mix that suits you to produce- but I do love the outfit posts especially!

  17. I like your outfit posts; they give me ideas for my own wardrobe. It appears you work in a pretty casual environment. My workplace has gone more casual (jeans are now not only acceptable but daily wear for many of my co-workers) and I want to look stylish and with-it, not like I’m in a time warp.

  18. This is my first comment also, though I have followed your blog since 2007. In fact, yours is my favorite fashion blog; number one on my blogroll and I check every morning to see if you’ve put up a new post. Yours is a really great blog to read with that first cup of coffee! What I’m getting to is I love all the types of posts you share with readers, so you’re doing it right, at least for readers like me. Also, I LOVE the outfit posts. Your outfit posts were what first drew me from the start to keep following your blog. The appeal is a combination of your style, which I admire, and that I can borrow from you more than any other blogger/icon on the planet. Seriously, I have found more great clothing through you than anyone. I’m not sure why. We’re not the same size. I’m taller than you, among other things. Yet what works on you works on me, nine times out of ten. Win! I think it’s because seeing clothes on you allows me to envision how the items might look on me, and mostly they do, at least the ones I gravitate toward. Just saying your outfit posts help others find their own style. You have a great eye for putting looks together.

You’re also a wonderful writer. The travel posts, not just the packing capsules (though I am using a recent one as inspiration for my upcoming cruise wardrobe), are such joys to read. I hope you plan to continue traveling all over the world and sharing with us!

  19. I really like the outfit posts and you have gotten me to purchase a few nice pieces from Eileen Fisher. I especially like your travel packing ideas.
I wish you would change things up a bit more with scarves or jewelry. Your outfit today is nice buy not incredibly creative or inspiring. I think you have to start pushing yourself a little more if you want to be our muse. Still work the neutrals but bring in a small zinger piece.
I too found Brahmin last year, bought three pieces at the outlet in West Palm Beach and one Nordstrom purchase. Really like them.

  20. J’aime beaucoup les “outfit posts”. So please, yes, more – and perhaps a few on how you go about selecting new items for your wardrobe and keeping it cohesive? Of course, love the other posts, too. Thanks for all your work on the blog and our behalves.

  21. I found you a couple of years ago and yours is the only blog I check on regularly. It is a clear and concise blog, classic in taste with loads of pictures. I love it all. The travel advice is spot on. I love the makeup you try and the fact that you share what works and what doesn’t. It might be fun now and then to get a few friends with different shapes (I’m a pear and I will fly out to you for this!!) and style them. That’s a lot of effort but might be a fun exercise once in a blue moon.
Keep it up. I look forward to every new post!!

  22. I, too, love your outfit posts. Yours is really the only one that I’ve kept reading over the years. Also, I am inspired by you because you also have a child with special needs. You demonstrate that we can be stylish even when dealing with issues most people don’t have to face.

    1. Sorry, late to reply back. I am sorry to have brought this up. I noticed that you addressed it in the next blog post. I was asking or sharing any details that you yourself haven’t divulged. But it made me sad, that you didn’t see my point on how I was inspired by you and felt a connection. I won’t ever say anything again. I am sorry!

      1. Hi Paula, please don’t feel that you said anything inappropriate or that you need to feel bad for! I’ve had several people ask in recent months about my family situation, and I have mentioned it too, so just wanted to clarify.

        1. You are so gracious. Thank you for replying…..yesterday was one of those days…..I shouldn’t post anywhere on those kinds of days…..if you know what I mean! Today is a better day. I love your blog and would love to have tea with you one day! Hugs!

  23. You have a great blog, which I enjoy very much. I dress basically in the same style. I do not have a lot expensive clothes but I use what you wear as inspiration and try to do the same with my own wardrobe. I think you offer a nice mix, not too much or too little of each subject.

    Keep up the great work.

  24. I have so enjoyed your blog. You don’t need to add any “zinger” pieces. You have a quiet, elegant and timeless way of dressing that seems to evade most people today. I have been inspired by your style. I also love your travel posts and feel your blog has a good balance. I am headed to Hong Kong and China in September and your posts have been most helpful. Thank you for this beautiful and graceful blog.

  25. This outfit is marvellous. The proportions are perfect. The details hit all the right notes. Love the flat shoes. My favourite look by far.

  26. I don’t comment very often, but I read your blog without fail every day. Your content is perfect – a little bit of everything. I do love the outfit posts, but I also love your travel posts, shopping finds, etc. You are such an inspiration. Thanks for everything you do!

  27. Thanks for your wonderful blog, which I never miss. Since all of my travel is domestic I don’t gain much from the travel posts, but I would not deny them to others, not to mention that is your passion. Like so many others, I love the outfit posts. It’s like having a friend with similar/compatible taste who cares about fashion as much as I do. I don’t have that in real life!

  28. I think you’ve found a nice balance, though I very much enjoy the fashion posts. Then again, I also really enjoy the beauty, travel, packing and the rare posts about balancing your work, home and blogging life. Well done! And thank you!

  29. I love how you showed the inspiration picture, then put your own twist on it. Keep these coming. I’m in my 60s but still want to be current. I do like the once rolled cuff on the model’s jeans. I’ve been doing that with my chinos and it looks fresh with sandals, loafers or oxfords.

  30. I’ve been looking for plain loafers like that for ages (and actually returned two pair that didn’t fit right, alas), so thank you so much for linking to those! If I may ask – how true is the fit (particularly re: wide/narrow), in your experience?

  31. This is the one fashion blog that makes me smile. Keep it just the way it is, unless of course you want to post more outfits! I love seeing how you incorporate the same pieces into different outfits, both for work and for play. It’s the only blog I use to make purchase decisions, and you never fail me. Thanks!

  32. I really enjoy your blog the way it is. I enjoy your outfit posts and your posts on travel, fashion, etc. I like that your outfits look fashionable and also comfortable. Your style represents who you are and what you like.

  33. I look at your posts everyday. I always feel a bit distressed when readers criticize your outfits, because I don’t see your posts as asking for advice but as demonstrating how women of a certain age can dress authentically, comfortably, and with flair. You invariably meet this standard, so I love to see the outfit posts — and if you can bear the exposure, I hope you will continue.

  34. Just one more voice saying I like the mix — but I loved your blog from the moment I found it, 7 or more years ago. Lately, I find, just generally, and probably because I’m at a transition stage, that the retail aspect of many Style blogs is not as appealing as it once was, but I like a smart What I Wore post with some “real person” thinking mixed in. Really love your extended thought pieces, but I don’t know how you manage to pull these together with all that you do. Big hugs to you and a huge thank you for all the years of blogging pleasure!

  35. A question: I’m crazy about the Everlane loafers and have bought and returned 3 pairs because they felt stiff. Do they soften and stretch with wear?

    1. Hi Leslie, YES, they do stretch out a little bit and soften up. They’re one of the few pairs of shoes I have that I find comfortable to wear without hosiery.

  36. I have echo exactly what Frances says. I like your thought pieces very much, and it’s also always a pleasure to see your face and your outfits:). BTW, I still think that last layered outfit was one of the best ever, so, just goes to show, different tastes abound. As of course you well know already.

  37. Hi Susan,
I love all the topics you cover. Outfit posts are my favorite and posts about beauty products are my least favorite. Your are articulate, intelligent and humorous. I don’t comment often, but have come to depend on you for guidance and advice. Thanks to you, I’m a big fan of Eileen Fisher and will probably buy a Brahmin bag shortly.

Regarding outfit posts, more would be welcomed. I appreciate anything you can offer. Things I especially like about your style include its consistency, simplicity (today’s outfit for example), and the way you show us how to use an item in multiple ways. Because we look somewhat alike, I can often copy your outfits with great success,

Thank you for everything you do.

  38. I should comment, it occurs to me, so I will! I enjoy your outfit posts even though I am more than a half foot taller than you; I should email you with the things you have introduced that I cannot now live without! So, belated thanks. I don’t read beauty product posts as I have used the same things forever and ever, amen, and knock wood, still presentable. I do love your travel posts, too, both the packing ones and the actual destination ones.

  39. From the recent survey I did I also found that outfit posts were popular. My theory is that we, as more mature bloggers, are acting as role models. The style magazines in general feature much younger women, especially in the ads and when they do use older models they are often celebrities with lots of photoshopping whereas we are real women with whom our readers can identify. I think we are offering a valuable service although I do find it a bit of a challenge as I don’t have a very extensive wardrobe.

  40. Your blog is my first stop every morning. (It used to be the NYT, now they’re #2.) I enjoy the mix, especially the inspiring outfit posts. I marvel at how you consistently turn out inspiring, thoughtful pieces given everything on your plate. Please keep doing what makes you happy.

  41. I’m one of your undying fans. I love your outfit posts–I never would have thought of the design elements that you have (movement mostly) and find that I’m being educated while enjoying your creativity. Hmmm. I don’t know that I said that correctly. I love that you show us where you got the pieces you’ve selected and why you selected them. The outfits (or pieces of the ensemble) may not be quite suitable or affordable for me but that doesn’t affect my appreciation of what you are presenting!
And I totally agree with Josephine: we don’t get older models and websites (other than the wonderful REAL women who blog for us!) that provide this service. And I agree with Jojo: your blog is the first thing I look for in the morning. Thank you so much for what you do!!

  42. Outfit posts are definitely a staple of this type of blog, but how many can you put together that are distinct?

My mailbox has been full of catalogs lately and I do my best to rescue them before my husband declares them all junk and recycles them, not because I intend to replace my entire wardrobe with what they offer, but because they often have good ideas about what to put together.

Various magazines that are being dramatic showcase things in ways that aren’t representative of the way I’m going to dress. To some extent I can tune out cobalt-blue eyebrows, but I find that catalogs, who’re trying to sell me things I might actually buy, do a better job of putting together outfits in realistic ways.

  43. The ensembles you post are very helpful for me, a post-fifty-something pastor who embraces classic, simple, and well-made clothing. Also, I’ve been able to find some pieces I liked with all the helpful links. Keep it up! I enjoy the blog very much, and learn a lot from you.

  44. You don’t need to change a thing.
I love your blog just the way it is and that _includes_ the affiliate links – I’ve discovered a lot of new (to me) things because of them.

  45. I love your blog–and the lifestyle aspect–and find your outfit posts to be very helpful. They’re not just about the look; they’re also about what’s practical and functional, which I appreciate. I enjoy reading about outfits as they fit into your life, also. Especially appreciated are the posts about the things we all deal with but find solutions elusive: dressing for seasonal transitions, dressing casually and still looking put together, elegant and comfortable dressing. Love all of it, and please keep it coming!

  46. Ditto Lisa, Frances and the rest of the gang. Don’t need to fix what ain’t broke. More travel capsules consisting of sink-washables and comfortable walking shoes would be appreciated, but rest assured, we all think you’re pretty great ;))

  47. Your travel posts are my favorite (I think that is how I found you). While I appreciate the outfit posts, I do wonder at your relationship with Eileen Fisher as you point to the brand in most posts. If these posts are being sponsored in some way I think that should be disclosed. As someone who used to wear a lot of EF, I think the brand has really lost its way from a style and quality perspective in the last few years, so currently the outfit posts are less interesting to me. Maybe more brand variety?

    1. Hi daphnenash, thanks for your comment. Just wanted to clarify that I do not have any kind of relationship or arrangement with Eileen Fisher. I do not receive any clothing or compensation from them. I will always disclose clearly if I received an item for review or to be included in an outfit post, or if a post has been sponsored. I’m a fan of the brand, but that’s as far as it goes. 🙂 And yes, I’ll be working trying to mix it up a bit more in the future.

  48. I’ve been following you for a while (first time commenting, though) and although I love the outfit posts I really enjoy all of the other info you post as well. I traveled to Ireland for two weeks this past summer and I can’t tell you how many times I went back and referenced your travel posts (and ended up buying a fabulous Lipault carry-on, thanks to you!) Make-up tips are appreciated, too — I’m loving my brand new Lancome Miracle Cushion foundation which I ran out to buy right after you posted it!

  49. I don’t really care for loads of outfit posts , but everyone else obviously loves them so what do I know ? The high price of Eileen F in the UK might be part of my reaction too . What I do like is your ability to take a little criticism – on the rare occasion when that happens . You don’t react in a snarky , defensive way but remain courteous & pleasant . not sure I would !

  50. I just want to echo that I love your outfit posts, but I love all the other posts too! Thanks for having a great blog that we can look forward to!

  51. I don’t comment either but love your blog and all the comments. Outfits and travel and ditto to all the other comments as to why.
I wear a lot of Eileen Fisher too so love the mix up with other things you show. Keep it up! I look forward to this blog daily,
I am using you travel carry on posts for a trip to Paris. I don’t carry on usually and take far to much, so am excited to us
you as inspiration! More on travel cute shoes!

  52. Yes, I like the outfit posts. It helps to have a visual of how things work together. The only request I’d make is more Lars!

  53. I enjoy all of your posts – ESPECIALLY make-up/skincare ones AND outfit posts. As a sixty something and longtime clothes lover I sometimes become jaded regarding outfit choice. Your outfit posts inspire me! Thanks for a lovely blog.

  54. Love your blog as is. The combination of think pieces, outfit posts and travel/packing posts have been inspirational and helpful. Though my budget may constrain me from indulging at some of the price points you feature, style, as you’ve put it so well in past posts, is less in the label than the approach. Ironically, in a blog that features retail affiliates, your cohesive sense of how a wardrobe should function has helped me more in culling pieces from my wardrobe than acquiring new ones, but your spot on sense of proportions and subtle approach to color inform my thinking moving forward. Great stuff.

  55. I too check your posts daily because I just love the mix of topics. I live in New Zealand but its amazing how your styling ideas translate across the hemispheres and into opposite seasons. And as another ‘petite’ sized person, I find the outfits really helpful for ideas on how to wear clothes in different ways and combinations. On your blog you really demonstrate how as we age we can still look fashionable- and comfortable!

  56. I like the mix, like the majority of the ladies. I like to read your reflections and about your attitudes. We share the similar style,so it’s always interesting to see what’s new and combinations you put together. As you write very interesting,it’s pleasure to read
    Dottoressa

  57. Since I, too, live in Southern California, I find your outfit posts useful, especially the links to the items you provide. However, I think I like the travel posts more since you go to such beautiful places and take such nice pictures. The packing posts associated with the travel posts are very helpful to me.

  58. I really enjoy your blog and like the mix of topics. The posts on travel wardrobe planning, both before and post-trip evaluation, have been helpful and I’ve benefitted from them. I also enjoy reviews of beauty products and tips on application like the tutorial on eyeshadow for “hooded eyes.” All around a delightful blog and I just want to say “thanks”.

  59. I adore your outfit posts. Like you, I’m not a huge fan of doing them more than once a week on my blog, but those are always the most popular posts. I suppose we have to do what our readers want! Your readers seem to enjoy topics other than just your outfit posts, so I’d say keep doing what you’re doing, because you seem to have the right mix. xxx

  60. Your outfit posts are my very favorites, so I’d love to see more of them, if you find the time to do them. Although my wardrobe budget is unfortunately smaller than yours, your outfit posts are still very useful to me. The way you combine and style items is always so elegant and polished, yet still very relatable and ‘real’.

I also appreciate that you mention your son now and then — there are so many of us with similar circumstances and family members.

Thank you so much for this wonderful blog! It is a real treat to read.

  61. This is my first time posting. I love your outfits and would welcome more. I also enjoy the references to other style bloggers and seeing what they wear. You’ve even inspired me to buy Eileen Fisher for the first time in years !

  62. I have been following your blog for a few months now and I think this may be my first comment. I love the outfit posts! Just as you are inspired, you are, in turn, inspiring. Sometimes it is one small thing that sets off a spark of “hey! I have all that stuff in my closet but never thought to put it together that way” and that is really appreciated.

I also love the packing advice. Style and packing is actually what sent me your way, when I found out I would be going on a Mediterranean cruise in Oct/Nov for my 30th wedding anniversary. Excitement was quickly shoved aside by “but I have nothing to wear!” panic, joined by a fervent desire not to pay for checked luggage! So I googled (of course) “fashion over 50” and found many great and helpful blogs. Of which, yours is my favorite.

It doesn’t hurt that I recently found out that you’re short, like me! I never would have guessed from the photos and the way you style your outfits.

    Thanks for all you do!

  63. As others have said, please keep doing what you’re doing. Your wonderful blog is #1 for me! Thank you so much.

  64. It is so helpful for me to see the outfits on a “real” person instead of the models. For those of us on the short side, it can really impact the drape and scale of clothes. I loved your jeans post, and would like a post about shoes to wear with jeans. Skinny, flare, boyfriend, straight; cuffed; if so, how big should the cuff be and how high? And which shoes/boots/booties go with each jean type? How do we style the bootie and cuffed jean without making our legs look too short?

  65. Like Briar I too live in New Zealand so brand is unimportant to me especially with a poor exchange rate for online purchases. Inspiration is what I look for and, with impending retirement, travel wardrobe pieces are key. Scarves in temperate months work for me to pull an outfit together with statement necklaces during hotter summer time. I identify with your style and have recently had a good wardrobe rationalisation as a result. Enjoying your blog.

  66. I love the mix of your posts! Don’t think you need to change a thing. The travel packing lists have been my go to posts when putting together a travel wardrobe.
You write beautifully. Thank you for blogging.

  67. Well, I don’t think I’m going to be much help to you. I love everything you do. So outfits, beauty, comments, travel, I love the mix. So keep on doing what you’re doing. Somehow you mix it up very well and I always look forward to what you will be writing about each day. So well done. You’re keeping alot of people entertained.

  68. Here’s another vote for not changing a thing. I enjoy your outfit posts, but I also appreciate the variety of posts on your blog. Travel, makeup and skin care, more general thoughts about what constitutes style — all of it. You are a completely opposite physical type to me, so honestly, I would likely stop reading the blog, or read it a lot less often, if it was all about what looks good on you. Though I do love your outfits on you!

  69. Your blog and the Vivienne Files have changed the way I think about my wardrobe. I love seeing your outfits as you are real. Thank you.

  70. I really like the mix, actually. The only thing I’d probably rather see less of is specific cosmetics, unless they’re really and truly mind-blowing. I LOVE outfit posts (yes, I just screamed that), and tune in daily. I also really enjoy seeing the travel packing posts, because they inspire me. Someday, I’m going to just straight-up copy one of them, piece by piece, and forget about it!

  71. I enjoy everything about your blog. I’m still mystified at how you manage to get it all done, work, blogging, childcare, and look so put together.

  72. I am another one who enjoys all the kinds of posts you do. I do get inspiration from your outfit ones, but also all the others–including the rare recipe ones! If my budget allowed me to buy more Eileen Fisher garments, I’d probably be copying you more directly and quite frequently, lol. But those shoes! I’ve been in love with those Everlane loafers for a long time now, and am trying to discipline myself to save for them.

    Thanks for everything you do!

  73. Add me to the list of those enjoying your blog in every permutation. It’s a pleasure to read your intelligent, thoughtful, & useful commentaries. You’ve given me resources that have eased the cumbersome process of wardrobe planning & acquistion which is not my forte.
I would love to see outfits that have lower price points as an option especially on the more trendy styles but it’s not required as I will continue to follow your blog. Merci bien pour tous vos efforts!

  74. I enjoy it all. I found your blog when I searched for packing ideas for a trip to Paris. Even though I ended up not going then, I’ve been a loyal follower ever since. Your thoughtful take on fit and fabric is very helpful and you give your personal touches that make us feel like we are part of an intimate fashion circle (and it feels real). I enjoy all of it, including when you try a new makeup or lipstick and give us your honest opinion and review, and especially when you discover an original like French Kande! I concur with another poster who said, “I don’t know how you do it all.” I don’t! And thank you for doing it. (btw, I just typed French Kande to be sure I got the spelling right and a link to HSN appeared. Is she selling there now? I always thought of her as an upscale boutique find. If so, good for her for the — expansion.)

p.s. I love seeing you in light colors, too. 😉

  75. Hello: One of the things that helps me get up in the morning and head “back to the battle” at my job is trying my best to look stylish and polished. To that end, your blog is a great source of inspiration and meditation. I love to see what you keep “featuring” A certain shoe or bag you really like, a cut you didn’t think you could wear but find you can. I also enjoy the makeup and skin care advice. I am not much of a traveler but enjoyed those posts too. Keep up the great work. I think you fill a need. I find it remarkable and sad that over all sorts of blogs there are individuals who just want to be mean. Just delete as you do. The trolls–never fashionable nor smart–seem to happen to everyone who blogs. Mary F.

  76. I love all the posts. In fact, my new favorite brisket recipe is the yours! I hope you keep up the diversity of posts.

  77. Please continue with your outfits, accessories posts (and also travel -related posts)!! I have gotten so many ideas from you.

  78. if it has been mentioned, forgive me. I loved the inspirational post and your translation of it. I very much enjoyed dissecting the differences between the two outfits

  79. I love your outfit posts–they are my favorites among your topics, although I enjoy all of your posts. I live in So. Calif., work in a casual environment and absolutely adore your style, plus I have a similarl figure, so I get a lot of inspiration from your looks.

I do get a bit depressed because so many of your clothes are Eileen Fisher, which is out of my budget even on sale…but I can usually find a similar item for less. I also really enjoy your makeup/skincare posts as it is hard to find this type of information for us women over 50.

  80. Ooooh, how much I hate it when you introduce wonderful items like the shoes (oh, these shoes! I so want them!) and they don’t get shipped or internationally! I can’t even pay them with a NZ credit card….Biggest sigh on earth from small NZ!

  81. I enjoy all of your posts and appreciate the variety. I’ve never been to Paris, for example, and love the travel photos (although I admit to being particularly interested in the street fashion shots!). I laughed today because I had saved that NAP outfit as inspiration myself…except I’m not a 6′ 110 model…it was nice to see how well it worked on a fit, petite woman. I’m curious, though…don’t you have a long black EF cardigan? If so, why didn’t you wear it with your inspired outfit?

  82. I say YES to more outfit posts. I really do enjoy them especially since I also wear EF clothing quite a bit. I also love your travel posts, especially the posts which center on how to put together a travel wardrobe. You do a great job blogging–your insights together with your fun personality are both so enjoyable for your readers.

  83. I enjoy the outfit posts, especially the travel ones, as I, too, try to have an every day wardrobe that is also suitable for travel. However, I am retired, and I no longer need office wear, or work appropriate clothing, and I wish there were more posts that reflected other parts of your life: what to wear while running Saturday errands, going on a family outing. My biggest style puzzles are for things like weddings and the other occasional but rare events in my life.

I am a long time reader, and I have a great admiration for your achievement of what seems to be a pretty good work/ life/ famiily balance, while meeting the needs of a special needs child. While respecting any desire for privacy in this area, I have enjoyed your rare posts about this area a lot, and wish their were more of them.

  84. Inspiration? We’ve seen this same look from you dozens of times now but this may be the most boring iteration yet. Yet you won’t publish this “pensee” because it isn’t like the 99 fawning replies above. (Have you added some kind of generic sycophantic comment generator lately?).

It’s a functional enough look, I suppose. Covers one’s nakedness. The effect is exceedingly dour, though, and the witch shoes don’t help. I believe the clerks at Gringott’s wear similar garb.

    1. Hi Judith, I’m never sure what your goal is with comments like these. Obviously if you’ve written with the belief that they’re insulting enough to be deleted, your intention isn’t to contribute to the conversation in a constructive way. Perhaps delivering a few good zingers gets your day off on the right foot. If so, I’ll give you that and you can move along now to your next target, as what I’m doing here seems to hold no appeal for you. Bonne journée.

      1. I also find this outfit a bit plain. I much preferred the one with the Eileen Fisher buffalo checked tunic. But the thing is, that whatever you wear, you always look fantastic ! Just because you’re such a beautiful woman, with a lovely smile. Maybe that’s what’s bothering Judith ? Just my 2 cents.

      2. In real life, I am a crabby, judgmental, super-critical, sarcastic, negative person. I try to leave only nice comments on blogs. I think ( hope) it’s making me a better person. If that’s being sycophantic–well, thanks for the opportunity.

      3. One reason I appreciate this outfit so much is precisely because it IS rather subdued. It’s exactly the type of outfit that can be worn multiple times and always look fresh and polished, yet isn’t so memorable that others find themselves thinking of the last time they saw it.

Un femme, I appreciate your gracious reply to the sour commenter above. How we live our days is how we live our life, and keeping to the high road is a good place to be for life’s travels.

      4. Daily, devoted reader, seldom comment. You are my muse. I like to dress up in my casual world (i.e. no yoga pants!) and your outfits give me direction. I just look in my closet, and repeat…it makes dressing for a day of “who knows what” easy. I will always look chic with flair! Especially whilst traveling. You’re a class act, Pseu. I wish we were friends! Oh, wait, we are!! Keep on, keeping on! And don’t let the jerks get you down!!

    2. Gee Judith, did you get out of the wrong side of the bed? Of course not everyone will love Susan’s outfit choices, but why make such a rude and hurtful comment?

    3. Wow, Judith. I’m tempted to pay attention to your comment about “witch shoes” as, based on the charming tone of your comment, I’d have to guess you’re an expert on them.

      1. Well, for heaven’s sake — I have NO idea why my above comment came through identifying ME as Judith — I’m Janet. I was annoyed & hit the wrong keys, obviously. Now *I* feel like a fool!!

  85. Thank you!!!
After checking the local weather (my homepage-hehehe), your site is the first I go to everyday. I enjoy all your posts and I think your blog has a wonderful balance of outfit posts, travel, beauty and lifestyle. You are inspiring and you have introduced to me several options that I probably would not have discovered on my own. Suz

  86. So sorry you had to receive that awful response above…why does the net unleash some people’s rudeness? Anyway, I’m a daily reader and love your writing style. Your travel posts have given me so much information and inspiration, they’re great. The outfit posts are fine, I get some ideas, it’s just that living in Canada I can’t access many of the specific items you show. Yes, online is a possibility and I’ve done that, just get tired of paying to return items. I do miss your think pieces which seem to have dropped of a bit but understand that they may be more challenging in some ways and I know you have constraints on your time and energy – as do we all 🙂 I think the most important thing is that you be happy with the blog, it’s yours to create and play with, we’re lucky to be along for the ride.

  87. I very much enjoy your fashion posts and have a suggestion. I am in the market for a dress for a black tie wedding in November in NY. I am a size 8, slightly pear shaped, age 60. The fashions seem to be either suitable for women under 40 or very dowdy. Your suggestions are most welcome!!

    1. Elle, I’ve had good luck a few times with “rent the runway”…a formal/evening-wear rental service…You could easily find a dress in an 8…and it’s fun to shop on line. They also have a brick and mortar store in NYC and Vegas.

I’m wear a size 14 38DD – yes, a hard fit off the rack…just last week I wore a Carmen Marc Valvo dress (dive into blooms dress) to a wedding. I looked FABULOUS and felt great! Best of all – the dress had pockets and was fun to dance in!! It cost $35.00 to rent for the weekend. Total…that’s what dry-cleaning specialty dresses cost here in the DC area! It comes with a prepaid return envelope. You pop it in the UPS drop box…done! No alterations, no dry-cleaning, buyers remorse! I’m not affiliated w/ RTR…just a fan! I’ve also rented a Badgley Mischka dress (5th Ave show stopper) which was spectacular! By the time your “of a certain age”, I feel you kind of know what looks good on your body. Good luck

      1. Thea, what a great suggestion! We had a similar store here in LA for many years, and I actually rented my wedding gown from them.

        1. Thank you,both!
I took a look & at the least, the reviews with photos on the site are helpful to see how the dresses look & fit on real women, whether we choose to rent or search the web to buy from that manufacturer.

  88. Judith’s comment above made my skin crawl, and I’m sure you must have felt even worse when you saw it. Your response was perfect. From mean girls in junior high school to serial killers, the world contains many mentally ill people. Fortunately they are a tiny minority. I hope all the positive responses you’ve received keep the exception from spoiling your day.

    1. Hi Cathy, thanks for the support. I’ve learned not to give negative people that kind of power over me. One thing I will ask though is that we all refrain from speculating (at least here) on anyone’s mental health. 🙂 Thanks again!

  89. I love this blog and read it daily, and have found some great pieces (notably some EF crepe pants that were great for travel) via your recommendations. I enjoy the outfit photos, the travel posts, the wonderful camaraderie of your community, and the beauty posts (though I usually find the price points of the makeup higher than I can afford). I would love to see some posts on your fitness and/or self-care routine (such as massage, facials, Pilates, yoga, hiking, etc.). What re-energizes you? How do you keep yourself in shape for the marathon of daily life at 50+?

  90. I’d like to be perfectly candid and say that I’m glad you brought this subject up. Just a few days ago I noticed a nagging thought in the dim recesses of my mind along the lines of “This blog is starting to lean a little too heavily toward consuming for my current mindset.” Of course I’m speaking for myself only, because I’m far less interested in acquiring things — especially clothes and accessories — than I was even a year ago. LIke Materfamilias, my interests are changing and while I enjoy your outfit posts (and applaud your choices) I especially enjoy your thought pieces. And I second those above who would support getting to know you better personally through whatever personal experiences you’d be comfortable sharing. xo

  91. I love your travel entries the most. Such great ideas on clothing, packing, etc. I wish you posted more about those trips!!

  92. I love your outfit posts. Right now I have two style related issues I’m wondering about. First, what is the best look for a curvy 50 plus woman and leggings. Should they we worn? Paired with what? Are straight legged pants a better option and which brands do you recommend? Second, did you recommend the over the knee boots that seem to be so current this season? With a flat heel and soft material like suede, I could imagine such boots being warm and comfortable but when would a certain age wear them?with a skirt? Is putting them over pants a bit too much. Thanks for the blog!

  93. I always enjoy your outfit posts. Our styles are so different but that’s what I appreciate is how you make neutral colors look so chic! Sorry to hear that you are receiving negative comments which I guess comes with the territory of having a blog. You have the right attitude of not letting it affect you!

Would love to see you Thursday for TBT Fashion link up.

  94. Hi Susan, love that deep cherry bag, exactly the size that I find the most useful! Looks like everyone wants you to continue your outfit posts, although I always find your pack-to-travel posts really interesting. In fact when I packed to go away this summer, I found myself thinking “now what would Susan include for this trip?!”. love to you

  95. I truly enjoy your posts, especially the outfits with accessories & shoes. I also love your travel entries and helpful packing advice. I’ve passed your site along to several of my girlfriends. Thanks for posting!

  96. I don’t know how I missed this post yesterday…I have been a follower since you began blogging!
Although I am retired, I still enjoy your outfit posts, often look up a particular item (and sometimes buy it!) and am always interested in the brief glimpses into your life. I love the travel wardrobe posts…do a few of them myself…and love the skincare/makeup tips…my moisturizer and eyebrow pencil choices are due to you!

Hang in there, Sue…those of us who blog can’t please everyone…and that goes especially for the occasional malcontent!

  97. Hi Susan. I’m a 57 year “old” mother of 4 young adults, one of whom was born with brain damage because of oxygen deprivation. I have recently retired from formal work and absolutely live your blog. I am trying to transition my wardrobe from a corporate look to that of classic casual and really enjoy your posts. I live in Cape Town in South Africa so unfortunately don’t have access to Eileen Fishers clothing range but try to access a similar look locally. Keep up the good work! Wendy

  98. Hi Femme, just let me say I start my day with “Une Femme” and enjoy every single post. I would not change a thing. I am intrigued with the concept of shopping your closet, rather than buying more clothing. I don’t really need much anymore, as I don’t work. Love cosmetics and accessories ideas. Thanks for all the love and devotion you put into the blog.

  99. Love your blog and your style focus and travel wardrobes have inspired me. You are an inspiration and I admire your time management skills! Juggling work and a busy family life with your adorable dogs takes skill.
Keep doing what you love and we will be here waiting for your next OOTD.

  100. I like your outfit posts! I read your blog in my feedly and really like seeing your combinations of neutral colours and some added “oomph” now and then. Personally my favourite posts of yours are the outfit posts, the ones with your dogs, and your “thought” pieces – the one on “chic” is a favourite. The travel packing posts are probably my least favourite but only because I don’t travel much and I am pretty comfortable packing light on the occasions where I need to. So that is just me, other people seem to enjoy them very much. Also I like the little glimpses into your personal life but I understand that privacy is important too of course. My style philosophy is similar to yours though with a different aesthetic, and I am in my late 20’s, but I have found your blog very helpful in honing my own style.

Also I love your Everlane shoes, I have been toying with getting them…bit more expensive because I am in Canada but it’s good to hear they are comfortable. They look great on you.

  101. Yours is one of the few blogs I still read. Though your style differs from mine (I prefer a little more color), you always look stylish and classic and I’m often able to use your outfits as a starting point for pulling together my own new combinations. I can’t afford many of the brands you favor, even Eileen Fisher on sale, but I can usually find similar items at a lower price point. I love makeup and appreciate your suggestions in that area.

I guess one of my favorite things about your blog is the quality of your writing, your gracious, friendly tone, and your honesty. I do appreciate reading about your son and his challenges. Our first baby was born with Down Syndrome and didn’t survive heart surgery at age 9 months. I have witnessed the ups and downs faced by other families we met when our son was living and sometimes felt guilty that we escaped those hardships. I know we missed out on many good times with him, too!

Please keep doing whatever you need to do to fit blogging into your busy life. I never resent a sponsored link or whatever bloggers might do to get a little return on their effort as long as it is disclosed, and you are always very up front about that.

    Keep up the good work!

  102. I LOVE your posts, and only discovered you earlier this year. I’ve found them really helpful as my body changes (ugh, and my style choices were slow to catch up) into my mid-fifties. And while I can’t afford all of the styles you list – I love seeing them….and have sprung for a couple Eileen Fisher pieces that got reduced at sale prices! Other pieces I admire, I have found a ‘similar’ style at TJMaxx. Anyway, it’s really helping me keep the polished look I had always loved. I admire that you can keep up with the blogging so consistently with all that’s on your plate! I did take time for a couple “all-nighters” to read some of your archived posts!- That was pretty interesting too! I do like the pieces that I know are older…and you wear them in different ways. It helps me think of the contents of my own closet a bit differently. The travel wardrobe bits were really fun & helpful, as well as hair cut/style, cosmetics, you name it, keep writing…I’m taking it all in- it’s been quite helpful in helping me find what works for me!

And for those that actually TAKE the time to complain (seriously?) rather than doing what normal people do when they lose interest in something and move along…..Well, I’d recommend that person get a hobby…perhaps weaving cat hair into tiaras…..fun stuff. (lord have mercy, I couldn’t resist that!).

As always – I look forward to every post you write! Cheers!!

  103. I like the mix and you really hit a home run with Brian and how to do makeup to reduce hooded eye lids. I went to see him for a private session. So often makeup artists don’t have a clue how to deal with women over 18. Actually some of the makeup looks are ridiculous for everyone. Have Brian back to do cheeks!

  104. I will follow you anywhere. You always provide great photos and commentary. You’re a beautiful writer and I love your process. Outfit posts are my favorite, but as a longterm fan, everything you do is a pleasure to me.

  105. I found this blog when I was looking for travel wardrobe know-how and those are my favorite posts of yours. You have such a detailed, organized approach and really explain each choice, which, as an infrequent traveler, I appreciate. I always dread packing for a trip and end up taking WAY too much that I never use. Until my last trip, which I packed for based on your advice. I used every piece I took and didn’t want for anything. So thank you!

I also enjoy your outfit posts and hope you won’t cut down on featuring Eileen Fisher after so many people have wondered about the “true” nature of your brand loyalty. I’m a 20-year devotée of the brand and have early pieces I am still wearing – they hold up! Eileen Fisher, Vince, Theory and J.Crew make up the majority of my wardrobe (with some Helmut Lang and Equipment thrown in for good measure) and even though I’m 5’10” I get ideas from the combos you come up with.

Not as jazzed on the shopping and sale alert posts as I’m trying to keep my consumption down.

I never read the beauty posts – I don’t use any mainstream cosmetics or skin care products as I’m concerned about the toxic ingredients – I only use organic, all-natural products.

I do find your thought pieces well written — and interesting, not least for the discussions that take place in the comments. 🙂

  106. I am retired, so I’m not so interested in your outfit posts, but can well understand why your readers like them; they are thoughtful, helpful and stylish. (If I have a personal look it’s Bag Lady 1 or Agatha Christie complete with brogues …)

What I like about your blog is your writing style which is elegant and concise. Your thought pieces are excellent – but I appreciate that they take time to write.

    Sue

  107. Please don’t let the few negative nellies ruin the fun for us all! Love seeing your outfits (especially the EF stuff). Going on my first trip to Paris in October. I need to study your packing suggestions so I bring the best options with the least luggage. 😉

  108. Oh another Brahmin bag… ohhhh so pretty. After seeing your black one, I checked out their site. Mouth watering. But again, ordering from abroad… it has not been a very pleasant experience for me.
    Greetje

    1. Hi Greetje, I think you live in the Netherlands ? I’m from Belgium, and I regularly order from abroad. Never had a bad experience. I usually order from Nordstrom, sometimes Saks, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales… they are work with Borderfree for international shipments. I’m always satisfied with the service. Nordstrom is the best, they are very helpful ! Don’t know what your unpleasant experience was ?

  109. I, too, have been searching for the perfect burgundy bag…….for several years now. I saw this post a while back, and your gorgeous Brahmin Duxbury in the Black Cherry didn’t just catch my eye, it stopped me dead in my tracks. Alas, others must love it too; it’s been sold out almost everywhere, even on the Brahmin website. Today was my lucky day; I got the last one on Amazon.com!
I love your blog and derive so much inspiration from you; thanks to you my wardrobe is simpler, more “deconstructed” and getting ready for work is now a pleasure instead of a stress-inducer.

  110. This popped up again and I’m glad to see it as I pack for my trip east. This embossed leather is so timeless. I remember playing with one of my mother’s small purses as a young girl, and it was alligator embossed leather! I loved it. Since the original post, I picked up a leather bag for a great price at TJ Maxx. The shape is similar to your Balenciaga bag in your “getting ahead of myself” post. The color may be oxblood (not my favorite color name, not like burgundy). This one is definitely leaning toward rust and it will incorporate nicely for fall. It’s a new bag color for me for sure and I am excited to use it to give my black, gray and tans an understated pop of fall color. It’s made by Tignanello, a company that has consistently been great with style, 100% leather and excellent price point. Thanks for the timely fall ideas.

  111. I think you present just the right amount of outfit posts. I really appreciate that you spend the extra time researching and including a number of shopping options for each piece.

  112. I know this is an older post, but I still felt compelled to comment because I so enjoy all of your posts. Your outfit posts help me with the basics in my wardrobe while your “thought” posts seem so on point with what I’m doing now. I’m 53, and my youngest will be 17 in week or so. Thank you for your blog. I also started blogging in 2007 so I know what it’s like to try and keep going with fresh content yet remaining true to the blog’s purpose. Thanks again.~~Dee
