living in linen…

Hermès Kelly double tour bracelet

It’s been HOT here lately, and I’ve been living in this Eileen Fisher chambray linen shirt on weekends. It’s cool enough for running errands, dog walking, etc. outdoors (and I love being able to pop up the collar to keep the sun off the back of my neck) but is covered enough that I don’t get chilled in air-conditioned interiors. Yes, it gets a little rumpled, but that’s part of linen’s charm 😉 and I still feel more put-together than in a tee shirt.

Sandals are Everlane from last year (similar here and here), jeans NYDJ also from last year (similar) and the bracelet (several years old) is Hermès.

Next year we’ll be traveling to Europe in July, so I’m making a note to myself to remember to include a few linen shirts in my travel wardrobe planning.

  1. Paul bought me that same colour in a double-tour strap to replace the black one on my H watch. I was a bit nervous about how it would work as I wear my watch all the time, but it’s turned out to be a fabulous complement to virtually anything I wear. Not sure how that works, given that it’s — hey, bright orange! — but it does . . . Love your outfit.

  2. I wish I could “internally” pull off linen but it is just too wrinkled for me. Lovely fabric for sure. I have found EF’s cotton and linen loose knit (but not sheer) sweaters do the trick. Mine is in the pretty grapefruit color. It has the feel of a fine knit and the breathability of both cotton and linen. And no wrinkles!

  3. I’ve always liked the *idea* of linen — cool, natural, classic. But how do you wear it without looking like you slept in your clothes?

    1. Judy, if I’m wearing a woven linen piece that will wrinkle, I try to keep the other pieces in the outfit either knit, slim or smooth. I also have some linen shirts that are intentionally crinkled (twist to dry for a pleated effect) so wrinkles aren’t an issue.

  4. Sue: since you reminded me about linen (and linen is making a comback it seems) I’ve invested in linen tees, shorts, shirts and dresses. This particular shirt looks very versatile! Love the sandals although I don’t think they would work for me. I liked the Mephisto sandals you got in Paris when you were last there. Thanks for this great post!

  5. Love the colors as well. I find some linen soft and other types scratchy, so I’m very picky about it. Where are you going in Europe in July?

  6. Linen in summer: a topic dear to my heart! I am typically miserable in the heat and humidity of our summers, but after a long time searching, finally found a source for quality woven linen separates and dresses this year (Vivid Linen). Though linen has been coming back into style to some degree, prior to this I’d been mostly seeing knit tees, etc. I prefer woven linen myself, as it feels cooler and gives off a somewhat more more polished vibe. Have no affiliation with the company, just a very satisfied customer.

  7. I have a great source of linen fabrics, in a myriad of colors and weights, and a talent for sewing. So I make my linen summer wardrobe. Such an easy fabric to work with, and I actually like ironing it–with a lavender scented spray.

  8. In our new reality of much hotter summers, I am living in and loving woven linen.

Just out of curiosity, are you travelling in Europe in July because you prefer to be there in the summer? I have avoided visiting European cities in the summer for decades, after suffering through tourist crowds and city heat during my first two trips. Should I rethink my preference for May or October trips?

    1. Leslie, I’m not keen on the idea of travel in the summer either but we book our flights using frequent flyer miles and missed the window to get flights earlier in the year. We had a certificate for a companion ticket we had to use by the end of next July or lose it. I still prefer May and October, and next year we’ll be more on top of getting our trip arranged earlier so we can do May travel again. (On the plus side, we’ll be in Paris for quatorze julliet so will have the opportunity to experience that celebration in person.)
