getting ahead of myself…

Eileen Fisher wool cardigan

I’d hoped to have an outfit featuring a vest this week, but the one I’d ordered ran larger than expected, so I’ve returned it for a smaller size, and will feature it soon. Instead (channeling the Seinfeld Soup Nazi), “Cardigan For You!”

OK, so in all honesty, it’s still been too warm to wear this lightweight wool cardigan. But I did want to show it to you because I have a feeling this color (“Passion Flower”) will sell out. It’s a very wearable russet red, an interesting take on the Marsala that was Pantone’s color of the year. The cut is one that Eileen Fisher has offered in the past and that has been one of my favorites. It has much more shape and structure than the boxy styles that have been predominant in recent seasons and curves in nicely at the waist. I think it’s a very polished looking piece. Just for fun, I styled it with a little bit of a 70’s vibe (earth tones, skinny scarf and bootcut jeans). The scarf is a few years old, originally from Ann Taylor. The jeans, shoes and bag are all from last year.

I find this color skews warm or cool depending on what it’s paired with, and is soft enough that it doesn’t look harsh when worn with black (as I find many reds do). Once the weather finally cools down, this cardigan will be in frequent rotation!

  1. Lovely! The color on you looks great. Question: Do you iron your jeans or have them fry cleaned? They always look so nice on you, like they have been pressed.

    1. Jill, thank you. No, I don’t press my jeans (just wash cold, dry low heat), but this pair has particularly soft fabric so keeps a smooth look. And I hang them with the fold along the front crease, that helps a bit.

  2. Oh, that looks fab, Sue. I love that russet red. And so fresh with the white tee. Yum. And a side order of the Soup Nazi along with it. Thanks for my morning sigh (russet and white) and my morning chuckle (George & Elaine).

  3. Beautiful look, Sue. Does the sweater have a shawl collar? It doesn’t appear to in your photos, but it definitely does on the Nordstrom page. I prefer clean lines, as shawl collars don’t flatter me. In your photos, the sweater looks to have clean lines with some tapering.

    1. Hi ibirish, thanks! The collar doesn’t fold over, if that’s what you mean. It’s a little higher in the back, but lies flat in front.

  4. I love this color and the shape. I’ve been buying some of the Eileen Fisher things you feature because they look so fantastic on you (been following your blog since last winter, you have a similar style, age, and look as me and your outfit styling is really helpful to me). I got the blue asymmetrical hem sweater you posted Feb. 13. But somehow EF looks oddly billowy on me, while they look so streamlined and drapey on you! Still, I might try this sweater. Some day, if you are comfortable doing so, could you share your stats — height, weight, measurements so I can compare how mine differ and see where I might be going wrong copying some of your choices. If not, no problem, that’s way personal. I do like seeing how you put pieces together and your outfits are a great inspiration to this reader!

    1. Hi Laurrie, thank you. I’m so glad you’ve found it helpful. I’m 5’1″ and my weight fluctuates by a few pounds but generally around 117-118. I find EF tops run larger than their bottoms, and sometimes find that sizing down helps.

  5. This cardigan looks so much nicer on you than on the model at Nordstrom ! I think it is the way you styled it : white tee (instead of the black one on the model), leopard scarf (the brown colors make the color of the cardigan look warmer too), and with the collar up instead of folded. One question : how does the back of this cardigan look on you ? On the model, it looks almost like a peplum. I think that will not look good in a larger size …

    1. Hi Agnes, thank you! I find that there is a slight peplum shape in the back, but as it doesn’t have pleats or gathers serves to emphasize the waistline rather than add bulk at the hips.

      1. I really appreciate that you take the time to answer all our questions ! I’m looking forward to see the Nic & Zoe vest on you. It is on sale at Bloomingdales, and with the Friends & Family discount, the price is really interesting. I’m just not sure about the quality … And it is cotton, so not very warm I guess ? One more question from me : I’m eying a Shinola watch (I like American stuff, just like you like all that’s French). Do you have any experience with these watches ? I also wonder why I seldom see you wear Vince (I love Vince), I think it is your style ?

        1. Agnes, it’s a heavier cotton knit, so would provide some warmth. The fabric is soft and it seems to be well-constructed.

I have not tried Shinola watches, so can’t speak to the quality on those. They are cute, though, and I find the name clever.

    1. Josephine, thanks very much! I used to think I couldn’t wear this color, but it was a revelation. Sometimes the EF boutiques don’t carry as many of the colored pieces. You might check Fenwicks; noticed they had an EF section.

  6. Wow, that is a great look. I usually avoid anything but a clear, deep red but that russet tone is gorgeous, especially with the white tee. I love uncluttered looks like this. And the leopard scarf — perfect!

  7. I am just about to embark on a three week holiday; (partly hiking in the north of England and partly hanging out in Italian cities), and spending too much time worrying about packing two completely different sets of clothes and foot wear. However, since I have been following your inspiring and lovely blog for the past week, my sofa now has a 15 piece wardrobe at one end and the standard hiking clothes at the other, minus a few things due to razor sharp editing!
I was not keen on leopard prints..until I saw how you add them to your outfits…hmmm…maybe my next purchase?
Thank you for the time and obvious pleasure you put into your site.
Your packing help is invaluable and the daily blogs fantastic!

    1. Hi Kathryn, have a wonderful time on your trip! Thanks, and I’m glad you enjoy the blog and find the travel wardrobes helpful.

  8. You look fabulous. I like the cardigan but I know from previous experience that I need knits/jackets that I can close. I walk everywhere and they tend to flap making them annoying to wear.

    1. Hi Maryann, thanks, and when I’m traveling prefer the same. This one could be closed with a belt or brooch as there’s enough overlap in the front.

  9. You weren’t kidding about the sweater selling out fast! I had it in my cart on Friday but didn’t place the order and sold out in my size Monday morning! Good choice;)

  10. When I saw you in this sweater, I thought “She must live near the beach. But then again, it’s hot there too. When will the heat end? Your outfit makes me want to push all my hot season clothes to side and begin wearing fall. No such luck.

  11. You’re looking autumnally lovely! Pretty combination, of course.I love the black, brown and golds in acccessories with the three main pieces. It seems that I’m seeing this color (and variations of it) and dark blues, and a little green besides black, so I’ve added a piece or two in all of them. Mostly layering pieces … it will be in the 50s here tomorrow AM at 8 when I pop over to my doctor’s office ( bronchitis, ewww) for the first time this year. Time to dig in the closet!
