With this season’s clothing styles leaning in an oversized and more unstructured direction, it makes sense that outerwear would do the same. Blanket coats, ponchos, cocoon coats and wrap coats are the outerwear silhouettes that work with these softer looks. But “softer” doesn’t have to mean sloppy, voluminous or limp. There are ways to incorporate some structure and I think wrap coats especially are a way to keep a look elegant, yet still harmonious with this season’s style ease.
From a practical standpoint, wrap coats make sense too: they’ll adjust to whatever you’re wearing underneath, whether a silk dress or chunky sweater. Before those winter winds begin to blow, wear open for a nonchalant look. Fold the collars up or down as needed.
You can keep it neutral, (camel is always a classic) or add some verve and drama with colorblocking or vivid color (love this bottle green!).

I’d love the white one for a special occasion. I wonder now that Nordstrom has stores in Canada if they ship here for free as well. To my dismay last year I found that unless companies have a warehouse in Canada, the charges for shipping across the border make on-line shopping not an option for me.
I’ve never had much luck with this style. I am hourglassy/plus, and though I’m tall, this style still looks like a bathrobe on me.
I think these look like good dress-up coats. They’re pretty timeless so it would be easy to add one and then keep it for years.
In my normal life I’m commuting on public transit with a backpack or messenger bag and a purse. I can’t imagine trying to keep all that in place while depending on a tie belt to keep the coat closed.
My take-away is that I like the shawl collar. On that could be pulled up like a muffler or hood would be great. It just needs to be on a coat that buttons or zips closed. If I see one in a washable nylon that doesn’t look too much like a marshmallow I’m clicking “buy.”
Wrap coats look nice in pictures but don’t work for me here in New York. It’s just too cold to worry about keeping a coat closed while I’m walking down the street carrying at least one bag. I need buttons and a silhouette that comes up high enough on my neck that the front will not gape open.
I would love to see a post on stylish coats that are knee length, go up to size 16, are wool and or cashmere,under $600.00 & not boring black…am I dreaming of the impossible?
