so here’s what I did last night…

A hint…

there were libations.

garance dore

and books…

garance dore, rashida jones

Yes, that’s Garance Doré and her friend Rashida Jones. She was at Club Monaco in Beverly Hills for a book signing event. First Rashida asked her a few questions about her life and how she’d developed her career. Both women were so open and personable, it was a pleasure just listening to them converse. Garance comes across in person much the same as she does on her blog: funny, warm, down-to-earth. They opened the floor up for a few questions, and I was very amused when in response to a question about her style influences, Garance said, “I always ask myself, ‘What Would Emmanuelle Alt Do?’ ” (Not that she would copy the style, but rather that EA sticks with what she likes and works for her.) She also cited her mother who is very stylish, and remembers especially her mother’s wardrobe from the 80’s.

The event was quite well-attended, and I was glad I’d arrived a few minutes early. I sat next to a couple of young women who had driven all the way in from Palm Springs. It was a very stylish crowd too, mostly young women but there were a handful of us representing the 50+ set. Garance wore the sleeveless black top you see above, grey jeans and black stilettos. She also had on some fabulous earrings. For someone who has been bouncing all over time zones the past few weeks, she looked amazingly fresh and rested!

After the Q&A, we lined up for the book signing, and to get photos.

When they are a bit star-struck, some people get tongue-tied. Not me. My brain may freeze up, but my mouth goes into overdrive, and I’m afraid I may have gushed and babbled a bit. No matter, she took it in stride and was very gracious. (Note to self: sit up straight!)

During the talk she’d joked that it had taken her hours to apply her smoky eye makeup. I thought it looked fabulous.

  1. Wonderful! So glad you were able to get to this and share the experience. And we over-50s (um, over-60 here!) were very well presented by you, thank you very much. Lucky Garance, getting to see what she might look forward to 😉

  2. Susan how FUN!! I follow her on FB and Instagram. She is an amazing young woman–I watched her interviewing EA on YouTube as well. How do you like her book? I have to remember to sit up straight and keep my shoulders back too….You look fabulous as usual!

  3. So great to see you both! I was in Paris, in the Bon Marché a couple of weeks ago and saw her booksigning announcement. Such a pity to have missed that!

  4. Love! You look gorgeous with your new haircut, Sue. Amazing to see my two favorite bloggers and fashion mavens together. C’est magnifique!

  5. How fantastic – i love Garance’s blog – as well as yours – she is 40 so not THAT young 🙂 I hope she comes to NZ one day. I would have thought that it was crazy to say that until Mireille Guiliano came to our local bookshop 🙂

  6. Oh wow, I have missed a lot in the past two weeks on this blog…. Been really dedicating myself to the gym after working all day. We have a work party in January and I bought a dress, well two actually:( Depending on how all my hard work at the gym goes will decide on the one I wear. I bought a black one, but went out on a limb and the other is red! The red hides nothing shape wise so if the belly doesn’t tighten up it will be the black one. Hubby likes both, but I think he is shocked with the red one, as he isn’t used to seeing me full on in such color.
I am sick of not liking my photos and am determined to get a hard body hahaha, (at least by the time we go to Greece in May).
Two operations and a broken foot this past year has also done damage to my strength, so I am serious weight training right now.

Susan your hair! Oh so pixie and adorable, I liked your hair before but this is also a great style for you.
I wish I could do the pixie haircut, I feel horrible in short hair, all masculine and just not feminine at all and it doesn’t balance my shape.

The event looks so nice and chic and fun. Yep I am also jealous, you get to some fun events.
Now I am wondering who this Garance lady is? She is adorable, very “French” looking, she seems just at first glance to have that style/look I like.

I actually have a recent huge, huge fashion problem, maybe you can help. This broken foot has brought forth pain in my feet, that while before was bad if I danced all night in heels, to now daily pain. The cast removal also removed any calluses on my foot, which actually was mother natures way of accommodating for bunions, now that the cushion is gone they figured out I have that problem and low and behold flat feet! 47 years and no one ever knew this??!!

Anyway, I have over 100 shoes…Some really great ones bought this past year that I have to get rid of:( (yes this keeps me awake at night) I have a shoe habit/addiction… I will have to basically start from scratch with shoes.
Friday I get ortho soles and now have to find shoes that look sexy for going to the party but that I can dance all night. Now how the heck am I to do that? Sexy, dancing, and ortho, don’t go in the same sentence:(

Maybe you have some suggestions? My dresses are both cocktail style, straight not full. Both have lace at the top, one has a portrait collar, one has see through lace back. Now can you imagine shoes that accommodate ortho soles with either dress???
Help please? I am sure there are more of us with ortho soles that want comfort but still want to look good.

Thanks for any advice (sorry long post, catching up)

    1. Check out Barking Dog Shoes. They review all kinds of shoes and boots for various foot problems. Perhaps you can find some inspiration there.

      1. Thanks Beverly, but I am in Europe and shipping from US to here for shoes wouldn’t work. Shoes need to be tried on especially for problem feet, and if they need to be returned, customs issues and fees would not be worth it. This past two weeks I have for the first time bought clothing online for the first time in my life. I have already returned 4 dresses…… Luckily they are easy return and in my neighborhood, but dealing with international returns would be a nightmare.
I was maybe hoping Susan would put together some fashion ideas:)

      2. ok I am digging the site a bit better…. Maybe I can find companies that are here in NL. Tomorrow evening I am going to a neighborhood store, I saw that some shoes had removable soles. The thing is I don’t want for just special occasion, I want to be sure not to make my problem worse. I am seriously going to do an overhall and no more shoes that are bad for my feet. That also means at about 200 euro a pop I want some wear out of them. Yep shopping for quality in NL is very expensive. (I am not even talking some designer fancy stuff, just quality items)..
I will look at this site and if I see something I will see if they have a dealer in the area. Thanks again.

        1. Melissa,I’m sure that Une Femme and other ladies will help you with finding a couple of solutions.
You are lucky because at this moment there are a lot of shoe types compatible with ortho soles ,you just need some thinking out the box. First, there are specially made soft orthosoles, maybe half foot ones (it needs some persuasions with your specialist, but theese halfsoles go in almost every shoe. They’ll say it is not good, but from time to time half orthosoles will suit you perfectly-as for this occasion-. I can wear them with my flat shoes, too,as an exception, not a rule). My orthopedic shoemaker can even build them permanently in sandals or other shoes. Maybe you can try this
And think about ankle boots and all variations of Mary Janes type shoes.
Sorry to tell you,but after calluses surgery almost everybody has flat feet. But,you’ll find a solution 🙂

          1. Thanks for the advice, actually I am getting the half ones, as that is a standard here. I am also finding a lot of shoes the soles come out. The thing is I have to quit looking at just pretty and the sole comes out, but think sensible also….
I don’t want to ruin my feet further. This weekend the quest will be on.
By the way I looked up the lovely Garance, her site is nice. I will look up her book next.

  7. Rats! How did I miss this??? J’adore Garance! If you remember next time call me and we can go together. I’ve been following her for ages. So charming and talented. Thanks for representing the rest of us.
