Tuesday Miscellany: Weekend Recap and Looking Ahead…

Boat ride in Long Beach

We had a really nice long Thanksgiving weekend, how about you? We hosted Thanksgiving dinner for the local family and extended family members, and I must admit that outsourcing much of the cooking made for a stress-free evening. Jeune homme spent the weekend with us, and seemed to have a good time. On Saturday, we all went for a boat ride down in the Naples area of Long Beach. That’s jeune homme above, who was having a splendid time waving to every passing boat and kayaker.

The weather was lovely (sunny but cool) when we set out, but we could see a band of rain on the horizon. We cut our cruise a bit short, and made it back just before the rain started.

Place Vendome Paris

In one week, I’ll be waking up in Paris!!! I’ve been making plans and scouring the weather forecasts. At this point it looks as though my anticipation of very chilly conditions is going to pan out. I’ll be finalizing my travel wardrobe in the next few days and will post soon.

texture and volume for fine hair

Finally, I have to rave a bit about this product, which I’ve been using for the last couple of weeks. I have very fine, thin, straight hair and find that most products which promise to add texture and volume only weigh my hair down and flatten it out after a couple of hours. This texturizing spray from Oribé is really different. It gives my fine hair a bit of lift that lasts for hours. It makes my hair look and feel thicker without being stiff or sticky. You bet I’ll be taking the travel size along on my Paris trip! (You can save a bit by purchasing this set with both regular and travel sizes.)

  1. Susan I grew up in Long Beach in a beautiful Cape Cod style house on the ocean (along the boardwalk. I have such good memories about that peninsula area including Naples. Thanks for the photos! I’m VERY interested to see what you’ll take to wear in that cold weather and what works well for you! I did take advantage of the Nordy sale and got those Aquatalia boots and a Kate Spade purse (fingers crossed). I’m interested in the Oribe–I have the opposite of thin and straight hair but my hair does need a product that texturizes. Thanks for the tip! Have a great trip–I’ll be following along! XO Sally

  2. It’s true that the Oribe texturizer works wonders. I guess that makes it worth its price tag (though every so often I wonder if I should really be spending so much on my hair). I have read that the Garnier De-Constructed Texture Tease is a reasonable dupe but have not tested it myself. Still at 1/10th the price I suppose it’s worth the flutter!

  3. I have thick curly hair and the Oribe is great for a pickup the day after blow drying. It is expensive but it works.

  4. I feel your excitement in anticipation of your trip back to Paris!! Twice in one year. FABULOUS! I also have fine, soft hair and I’m going to try the Oribe. Thanks for the link 🙂

  5. Loved seeing the obvious happiness of your young man, remembering that long-ago visit. . . We’re heading up to Paris today by train for our last few days — will wave to you as our planes pass each other in opposite directions. I’m hoping my fake-fur vest over my wool blazer will keep me warm enough (plus gloves, plus beret, and possibly plus a cashmere scarf wrapped over all that! 😉 — it’s supposed to hit freezing tonight and stay cold while we’re there, but at least it should be sunny. . . .So excited for your trip, and looking forward to hearing about it. I’ve always wanted some time in Paris in December, and our two days will give a taste, but I know I’ll want more of the Sparkly, more of the Festive! And you always bring it! Bon voyage!

  6. So happy to see your son, and it seems like he’s doing so well. I’m heading to NY on Friday and it’s very cold there too. I use the Oribe in cold, dry times when my hair tends to go limp.

  7. I just read a magazine that also featured the Oribe dry texturizing spray. Apparently it doubles as a dry shampoo that is not as stiff or heavy as many, so it was definitely on my radar. Another product I love for my own fine hair is Tri Design’s Protein Bodifier. My salon sells it, but it’s also available online. It adds volume, without weighing down my hair at all. Highly recommend!

  8. Lovely to see jeune homme, even if only from the back! I have a teenager and he, too, has forbidden me to take any photos other than the back of his head. We actually took a paddle-bike ride in Naples Harbor this week, too! The weather was perfect for it.
