An elevated everyday look with cargo pants (yes, really!)

If you’re looking to take a break from your jeans, but classic trousers feel too staid and businesslike, you might want to consider a pair of (refined) cargo pants…

Polished casual outfit with striped cargo pants

Here’s a polished casual outfit idea for you Winters. I thought these striped cargo pants were a more refined take on the look. And they could easily be dressed up or down.

I’ve seen “cargo pants” and “utility pants” used interchangeably by some brands and retailers. Usually, cargo pants will have pockets on the outside of the leg, at about thigh or knee level. For a sleeker look, stick to those styles with relatively flat side pockets. Or no pockets. Here are a few more stylish and refined cargo (and utility) pants:

  1. Hi Susan- I was watching your video from London about being a gamine and all the different types of gamine. Then the phone rang and I lost it. Where can I find that video?
    Thanks in advance!

  2. I love the shoes – I’m currently trying to determine if I’m a silver, gold or pewter colored shoes type any gal. My budget precludes buying all 3 colors. Any suggestions on how to narrow it down?

    1. Hi Anna, if you aren’t sure of your seasonal color palette, I’d suggest looking at the neutral wardrobe items you wear most often. If they are cool in tone (black, blue, navy, gray, burgundy, white) I’d go with silver/pewter. If you wear more warm tones (brown, taupe, olive, rust, camel, ivory) then I’d suggest gold.

  3. Hi Susan, Thank you for posting outfits for those of us who are winter color. Also, I just discovered your “Style Hub” today. What fun! It makes it so easy to search for ideas and information without having to search through past posts. Thank you for the great job that you do with your blog.

  4. I am totally smitten! Love this outfit particularly the pants. If the rise weren’t so high, id be all over them. great idea, Susan!!

  5. Hi Susan, I love this beautiful shade of pink with the black and silver in the other items. It’s still so warm down here in La Mesa that the most I’m able to layer is a light cardigan over a blouse or tee. Left the house with a scarf on today and had to take it off before I’d even pulled out of the garage. Anyway, that’s my biggest challenge, I like to layer but the weather isn’t cooperating lately. Thanks for featuring this lovely winter palette, it inspires me in what to be watching for in my best silhouettes.

  6. This is a nice outfit. I particularly love the color of the sweater. Apart from the maker labelling them as such, what makes this a cargo pant, do you think? Does having a pocket of any sort now qualify? To me, it renders the term kind of meaningless. YMMV.

  7. For some reason cargo pants are not my favourite. Probably because I don’t want to wear high heels with them and then they tend to be too casual for me. The Anthropologie cargo pants you listed do appeal to me, but with that sweater AND the boots.
