Hermès Scarves – Back From the Brink of Fashion Oblivion?

Despite its seemingly ignominious status among les Parisiennes, the Hermès scarf gets the fashionista treatment in this month’s Elle magazine, as “16 Style Tastemakers” [?!?] bring their own spin to the classic accessory.

  1. Personal style, LOL! The styling other than those we’ve worn for years (belts, on bag, around neck, etc) are just silly: a carré tied to the wrist? And the Hermesman cape?

  2. Duchesse – agreed, it’s so affected, and I’m sure would never be worn that way outside of a photo shoot.

Belle – she posted yesterday about eyewear. I love the look of the halter top too, but alas am too busty to manage it myself.

LPC – yes, and anything classic worn by the young is assumed to be ironic.

Vix – I’ll probably stick to the more traditional wearings, but interesting pics!

  3. This was fun! I’m wearing mine anyway just ’cause I like . . . But it’s interesting to see that Hermès might be marketing the status back into these scarves. Wonder how that’ll play in Paris? Do I hear a Gallic sniff of disdain?

  4. If I had a beautiful, a collecter´s Hermes scarf, I would have it framed and use it in my home decoration obsession.

  5. This was very interesting! Thanks. I’ve often wondered if anyone wears these anymore.

I hope one doesn’t have to wear pony-hair boots like the fourth model to carry it off.

  6. I still have a hard time wearing a scarf as a belt. It always seems to add bulk. But I’ve seen other do it with great pizazz

  7. For all scarf fans, a history of the Hermes scarf has been recently published in the UK by Thames & Hudson – out in the US next year: author Nadine Coleno.

  8. Returned to read what everyone thought; I’m wearing the carré that’s the homage to the Ernest Shackleton Antarctic Expedition, with seals, penguins and icebergs in grays, taupe, black and an orange border. Who else would make a scarf of an Antarctic expedition?

And my verification word is “rhare”, rheally.

  9. Uh, I’ll do these just as soon as I get my skin-tight leather pants and platform shooties out.

    Which would be never.

That Shackleton scarf sounds WONDERFUL. Love companies that aren’t afraid to be interesting instead of just decorative.
