We all know that a cool pair of sunglasses will instantly up your style quotient. But did you know that wearing sunglasses regularly provides some health benefits too?

UV radiation isn’t just damaging to your skin, but can damage your eyes and accelerate problems associated with aging such as cataracts and macular degeneration, not to mention sunburn of the eye (have experienced this…no fun!). And 10% of skin cancers are found on the eyelid. Wearing a pair of sunglasses with UV blocking lenses whenever you’re in the sun goes a long way toward protecting your eyes themselves and the delicate skin around your eyes.

Sunglasses have become a habit for me whenever I’m outside or driving during the daytime. If you need prescription lenses like I do, you’ll find that most quality sunglasses will accommodate them.

I’m definitely going to check out Nordstrom when it’s time to get my next pair of sunglasses. I was really impressed with their selection and I like that they provide very specific measurements for each frame style, which makes getting a good fit just that much easier. Shipping and returns are free, so I can try a few different styles and colors risk-free.

Do you wear sunglasses regularly? What styles do you prefer?

  1. I was 56 before I got my first pair of prescription sunglasses, and I’ve been wearing glasses since I was eight years old. They are simply one of the greatest inventions ever! I wear them every single day, summer and winter, while outdoors. Why did I wait so long?? Mine are large tortoiseshell frames with grey lenses.

  2. For over twenty years I wore classic Ray Ban’s with prescription lens, the first pair in black (a la “Risky Business”), and the second in tortoise shell. Sadly, I recently lost my beloved RB’s, but that’s left me with an opportunity to purchase a new pair of sunglasses. I’ve been eyeing Oliver Goldsmith’s classic “Manhattan” style, made famous by Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. I love the feminine style, and just hope they look good on me once I try them on!

  3. I wear prescription sunglasses every day and have for forty years or more. I could not live without them! I have never tried using the frames of regular sunglasses. What an idea!

  4. I am more of a Jackie O style sunglasses type, black dark, but mine a bit more trim, not so large and not round or 70’s round square look, and try to get close to the face. I actually fit children sizes, but they for obvious reasons don’t look good. So I have a hard time finding glasses that fit period. I wear contacts so I can avoid the prescription ones.
I bought similar in dark grey now that I have my silver stripe showing in my hair. I stick to cheap pairs, cause I am forever banging my head into things or falling off my head when I look up to people. (short chic here)
    Yep I am a klutz.

  5. My eyes are very sensitive to light so…sunglasses every day, sometimes even when it is cloudy! I’ve been wearing Ray Ban “Erika” sunglasses for a couple of years but just bought a pair of Persols like the ones worn by Lea Sedoux in Spectre and I LOVE them. The Ray Bans are plastic and lighter while the Persols have glass lenses and have a little more weight – I wear the Ray Bans for my morning walks and then switch to the Persols for work/errands.

I have to admit that I am CHEAP and will search for the best price on the internet for my sunglasses once I decide on a model – I love Nordstrom but hate to pay full price!

  6. Good to know that Nordy’s has a good selection! I love the fashion forward pair–can’t remember the designer (Chanel??) but they are WAY too expensive for me. I have two pair of Ray Ban Wayfarers that I love. Nice to have a change though…..

  7. Some of those sunglasses are worth buying for the name alone. Heh. I love wandering through Nordstrom and trying on their sunglasses. I have a collection of sunglasses but never enough in that department.

  8. I’ve experienced headaches and eyestrain after wearing sunglasses with improperly shaped lenses. So I’m now fussy about the fit and function of sunglasses. I’ve had just about every sort: converted prescription glasses to sunglasses; the tinted clipon for my prescription glasses and Ray Bans.

My best sunglasses to date are from Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC). The product line has different frames and interchangeable lenses. I wear the tinted lenses for daylight. For windy night-time walking I wear the clear lenses.

One of my colleagues has many pairs of sunglasses and she’s always losing them. My theory is that she forgets which pair she is wearing and then overlooks sunglasses left on tables in restaurants, or on the counters in the shops. This theory is the reason I won’t have more than two pairs of sunglasses.

  9. I have worn sunglasses Every.Single.Day for many, many years. Since I wear them so often, I can justify splurging on a new pair every year or two. I have a few pairs of Ray Bans, plus a few others I rotate in, but my current (for the past two years!) favorite is the Ray Ban Clubmaster in the silvery brushed aluminum frame. I saw a picture of them somewhere online, & had to hunt them down till I found them. I’ve gotten so many compliments on them! Keep thinking I should give them a rest and switch to one of my other pairs, but I like them so much I just keep wearing them!

  10. I never, ever go out without sunglasses. Keep an extra pair in the car. As I age my eyes have become more sensitive to light: can’t believe I used to go without them! But I definitely do not like the thick or heavy plastic on the bridge;I find it feels heavy and irritates me after about 30 minutes. So the “classic” with thin metal bridge and frame is my choice.

  11. I’m a big fan of Oakley sunglasses. I have two sets of sunglasses frames that I can pop my prescription lenses into, depending on my mood. And Oakley has some pretty nice tints and anti-reflective coating choices available for their lenses. The sunglasses weren’t cheap, but I wear them every day, and they have held up nicely for the last 5 years. And if I want to read outdoors, then I just swap in my non-prescription tinted lenses, easy peasy.
