weekend update: lunch, links, hair and more

two susans
this photo doesn’t capture it, but Susan has the most bright and stunning blue eyes!

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Susan of the blog Fifty Not Frumpy. She was here to do a photo shoot for Covered Perfectly, and I was able to get away from the office for a couple of hours to meet her for lunch. It was such fun; we marveled at how the blogging world has provided so much opportunity for connection and getting to know like-minded women. (Susan was lucky weather-wise: her visit was nicely timed in between two heat waves, the second of which will hopefully break soon.)

Madewell

I’ve really been crushing on Madewell lately. They’re owned by J.Crew, but are the more “laid back” sister of the two. It doesn’t look like much on the hanger, but the sweater shown above is a lovely lightweight and swingy merino that’s a perfect transitional season piece (nice for cool weather travel too). Available in several colors (love the “vintage forest”) and it’s on sale!

I also like this mixed tartan scarf, and embroidered tie-neck blouse, which gives a nod to bohemian style without evoking patchouli and finger cymbals.

I missed getting my submission in, but Adrienne and Jill had their monthly “How I Wear My…” gathering earlier in the week, and this month’s theme was Tassels. See all of the contributors at The Rich Life On A Budget and Everything Just So. This would have been my submission to the party.

I wear this tassel necklace at least once a week. (Other necklace here.)

Imogen explains why white is her new black.

Melanie of Bag and a Beret is one of my favorite bloggers, not only for her artistry but also for her wry and irreverent sense of humor.

Tomorrow Brian my Hair Genius™ is paying a visit for a much-needed touch up. I still like my hair color but am taking notes for that day when I’m ready to let my natural color take over. Judith (Style Crone) and Alyson (That’s Not My Age) describe their strategies for transitioning to silver.

  1. Yes, that’s a great photo of you with Susan. And merino wool, I just love that fabric. I found a men’s old cycling jersey of merino wool and it is truly a favourite piece.
Finally, thank you so much for the shout-out here and on Facebook. I hope your weekend is Most Joyful Spendid too. Hahaha. Many happy karmic returns to you!

  2. How wonderful that you were able to meet Susan. Blogger meetups are the very best! And Melanie is one of my favorites too.

Thank you so much for the mention. Your hair looks stunning in these photos. Going from red to silver has been more fun than I ever expected, but I wasn’t ready to make the change until my 70’s. Doesn’t Alyson look fabulous!

  3. Thanks for the Madewell sweater suggestion – I ordered one already! We’re enjoying our first cooler weather in Texas this weekend so I’m really in the mood for fall clothes. Of course, by the time this arrives, it’s predicted to be near 100 degrees again, but at least I’ll have it to look forward to!

    1. Just received the Madewell sweater today and wanted to say how pleased I am with both the quality and the color. The lightweight merino will be perfect for the mild fall weather we have in Texas, and I can easily layer it once it finally cools off. Thanks again for the recommendation!

  4. I enjoyed our time together so very much! You have the sweet gentle nature that I cherish in my closest friends. Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to have lunch with me. I hope we can get together again soon.

  5. Interesting posts about going gray. The salon that my stylist is a part posts a lot of good looking hair color. The other day I noticed that some young women are going gray, usually with a colorful ombre accent. It got me to thinking, why not just go gray by coloring the rest of your hair gray? Obviously it won’t look quite the same on a 55+ face as it does on the 20-something instagram head, but it seems like something to consider.
