I asked, you answered: results of my 2022 reader survey

at work on the blog: goals and direction in 2022

At the beginning of the year, we often set personal goals or directions, and I like to do the same for the blog. More than anything, I want it to be relevant and helpful to you, which is why your input is so valuable.

I’d like thank everyone who took the time to respond to the survey, and for your honest and open answers. Your feedback really helps me to understand what topics and types of content are of most value to you. I thought you might be interested to see how your fellow readers responded, so here are some of the results.

Topics of interest

une femme d'un certain age reader survey results: topics of interest

It’s pretty clear that you’re here mostly for Style. 😉 Almost 78% of you chose Style tips, while Outfit posts were a close second with 68%. Travel wardrobes came in third with 61%, and Color & Style analysis with 43%.

Beauty, Lifestyle and Health & wellness were topics of least interest, so while I will occasionally include these topics, they’ll be a smaller percentage of content.

Style priorities & challenges

Your answers to Style priorities were pretty evenly divided between: Recycle, remix (56%), Detoxing, simplifying (50%), Adjusting for lifestyle changes (49%), Beefing up basics (49%), Adding accent pieces (45%). So I’ll do my best to provide a balance between these.

une femme d'un certain age reader survey results: purchase priorities

When it comes to purchasing decisions, quality was the top factor at 73%. How often will I wear it came in second at 63%, which tells me that most of you are interested in investing in pieces that you’ll use long-term. That you LOVE it is important to 52% of you. Price was in the #4 spot at 50%.

While fewer of you prioritized Sustainability & ethical manufacturing, I’ll continue to keep my eye open for brands with these attributes, and share them when I find them. But I’ll also continue to emphasize quality and wearability.

une femme d'un certain age reader survey results: style challenges

Half of you (50%) said restyling pieces in your wardrobe was one of your biggest style challenges. So I’ll continue to emphasize that going forward.

Finding clothing that fits was #2 at 40%. I hear ya! 😆 While everyone’s body is unique, I’ll do my best to address some common fit challenges & solutions.

38% of you selected “figuring out what colors and silhouettes are best for me.” I’ll be addressing this too in coming months!

Under “other,” several of you shared that looking current or modern was an area of importance. Adjusting to a more casual lifestyle while still looking sharp was also something a few of you mentioned. Dressing for a changing shape as we age was also a common challenge.

Spending

Your answers here reinforce that quality is important to you, and that you’re not here looking for fast fashion. While I always want to encourage you to buy the best quality you can afford, I understand that many of you are on limited budgets. So I’ll continue to try to share alternatives in a range of prices. And I’ll give a heads-up when quality pieces go on sale.

Favorite (popular) brands mostly widely distributed, with J.Crew, Talbot’s, Nordstrom (in-house), Eileen Fisher topping the picks. Several of you mentioned Athleta, Everlane, and some higher-end brands like Max Mara. Some of you live in other parts of the world and have access to different brands than we do here in the US.

Travel plans

une femme d'un certain age reader survey results: 2022 travel plans

It looks like more of you will be traveling than not, with most of you planning to travel within your country. I’ll begin adding updated travel wardrobe ideas in the next few weeks. But in the meantime, be sure to check out my Travel Wardrobe Resource hub. You can filter articles by season and trip length to find which ideas are most helpful for your travel plans.

Thank you again for your time and feedback! I’m feeling very energized and excited about 2022, and look forward to continuing this style journey with you.

  1. Thanks, Sue, for offering the opportunity for us to provide feedback on what we’re most interested in for the future. And I wanted to mention how much I appreciate how you have organized your travel wardrobe resources… I’ve been happily perusing these posts as I anticipate a trip to France in late summer!

    1. Watch the temperatures carefully before you leave. It was predicted to be in the 80’s during my trip to SW France last September, but I forgot how hot 80° in full sun can feel. The entire trip, I regretted the moment that I had held the perfect light cotton shirt in my hands and then decided not to pack it. I should have added 10° to the temperatures to account for sun. If I had been preparing myself for 90°, I would have packed the shirt (and worn it thankfully every day.)

  2. Dear Susan, I am thrilled to read the results of your survey. My key interests are covered. Regarding travel, I will live vicariously through yours. We miss planning and enjoying our overseas trips, and we will resume when we feel that there is less of a personal risk for us. Meanwhile, I will enjoy your wardrobe planning, your shopping the European brands, and your recaps of what worked best. There is always much to learn.

    1. My thoughts exactly, Deborah!
Thanks, Susan, for taking the time and interest in your readers to conduct and analyze the survey results.
      Elizabeth

  3. I love your blog and the on,y thing that surprised me was the lower rating for your travel recaps. I love those but in full agreement about health, skin care, makeup. Just not too much interest there. I come here for style because you shine in that category. You’re one of the most inspiring bloggers and can’t wait to see outfits for this year.

  4. Susan, thank you for sharing the results of your survey. Thanks, too, for the posts and photos of
Items you purchased during your European trip. Based on a post I ordered two Falconeri vests and I love them! They’re perfect in every way☺️

  5. I am in agreement here so far, Iove reading of your travels and what you saw as well as what you wear while there and travelling.I was glad to see that there are many others who are as interested in the colour/style journey you have been on and the chats with Annie and the Red Leopard ladies. Remember, you can’t please all of us all the time, but you have been doing a splendid job so far. Thanks for all your hard work. Oh, and we love to see Gigi.

  6. Interesting. Actually, what you have done most of the times on your blog is what still attracts women. It is very good of you to do this survey. It gives you guidelines to “keep your customer satisfied”.
    Greetje

  7. I also really enjoyed your chats with Red Leopard and how they determine colors and style. I hope you do more chats with them.

Also I enjoy your travel stories. If I can’t travel I can enjoy it thru you.

    1. I too have enjoyed the video chats about style and fashion. I’m looking forward to seeing more. Please continue with your travel stories, Susan. I miss travelling SO much! There are many places I’d like to visit in U.S. and I’m anxiously waiting for this pandemic to get under control. For now, I will travel around British Columbia especially closer to home on Vancouver Island.

  8. Hi Susan,
When you do a pots under the health and wellness category, May I request a post about skin health and resilience. As we become older our skin this and becomes more fragile. A post with perhaps dermatology input about how to keep our skin healthy and strong would be most appreciated. Thank you for considering this! Good information is so hard to come by.
    Annie

  9. I think the reason your travel recaps received a lower rating was: we were only allowed three options and we’d run out by that point. Personally I love your travel posts and everything else about your blog.

  10. Hi Susan,
I was glad to see my survey answers put me right in with the majority, so I’m looking forward as always to more great style tips. Some of my most loved (and most worn) wardrobe pieces were purchased after seeing them featured here in your blog. I wanted to mention how much I also enjoy seeing posts that show little vignettes of your home and decor, and of course your sweet little dog. Another one of my favorite features was when you shared your home landscape project. It all makes for a more personal experience.
    Brenda 🙂

    1. I couldn’t have said this better, exactly my thoughts! I too have purchased items, mostly whimsical prints you have worn, and learned about new brands (Biden, Amour Vert, etc). Thank you for a relevant blog.

  11. Thank you for sharing the results of the survey. I am totally in agreement with the majority of the feedback. As I approach 70, I want fashion to be important to me. Although not highly rated, I am certainly glad you cover skin care occasionally. I am now a devotee of BIossance and Nuxe because of your recommendations! Looking forward to gleaning much knowledge from you in 2022!

  12. I agree with No Fear of Fashion/Greetje’s post, that the survey aligns with what you typically do on the blog. I always look forward to reading your blog!

  13. Like many others, I’m mainly here for the travel. As a packing geek, I love to see your wardrobe picks and then look forward to the recap afterwards. I’ll admit, I second-guess your initial choices and then eagerly await your recap to find out whether my instincts were right. I do the same thing with my own trips. It’s hard to get it exactly right.

  14. I enjoy your make up and fitness posts. I like it when you mention what’s working for you in those two areas. I enjoy reading about your travels & what you saw and where. I like when you share your new purchases for outfits, too. Thank you for such an enjoyable blog to read.

  15. Thank you for the survey. As I’ve gotten older I’ve become more conscious of the details of my clothes. I enjoy reading and learning from blogs and videos that help you assess your wardrobe. Especially how to dress your body shape, proportions, style personality, color and applying the rule of thirds. Because I’m a minimal classic dresser-this style seems to be under represented in the over 50 crowd.- I enjoy styling tips for adding color to a wardrobe but respecting the minimal aesthetic. Thanks to you and your color analysis journey I’ve revisited my winter palette to see how I could add color but still remain true to my style. The best tip I found was to make a color palette and stick to it for a while and then reassess. Everything else goes into a holding place to be revisited later. So for fall, winter and probably through spring I started with 4 base colors for deep winter (black, navy, gray and white). Then added three color families: blues, greens and burgundy/berries.-from the darkest part of the winter palette. They’re less scary. Pairing a color to a base color helps add color but still has a minimalist vibe. It also makes it easier to shop. I needed to replace some sweaters so I went to the filters of some shops put in only the colors I wanted and there they were. I found a dark green sweater, a dark berry sweater and a sapphire colored sweater within a few minutes.

  16. I’m late in responding but wanted to thank you for your thoughtful survey and compiling our responses. All very helpful. I like everything you post and look forward to your wise guidance and recommendations. And, more Gigi, please.
