Jackets: les manteaux "Walking"

Une femme loves the look of a walking coat, and at this time of year, seriously envies those of you who live in climates where temperatures will permit the wearing of these before January. Here are a few I’ve found that are a step or two above ordinary.

I’m liking this ruched collar trend. It adds an interesting detail, draws attention up to the face, and works best when the rest of the jacket details are kept simple and complementary. The pewter adds both interest and neutrality, while being subtle enough to be worn once the metallic trend has waned. Nic & Zoe, $196.
Classiques Entier walking coat, $398. If you’re looking for a pop of color, this coat obliges. Though this is not a hue une femme wears well, I appreciate that they kept the styling simple, allowing the color to carry the day.
Houndstooth made snazzy. Ralph Lauren, $399.
Again, not one of une femme’s colors, but the bright blue on this hooded peacoat would look amazing against a backdrop of autumn leaves. 525 America, $198.

This one combines bright color and collar detail, but wisely keeps everything else minimal. Fleurette, $775.

  1. I love all of these — I’ve somehow ended up with three of four new coats of this weight and length (didn’t know they were called walking coats) in the last year — black and navy, I’m pretty predictable. I really appreciate how polished a smart coat can make me look, especially with a great scarf and bag. I guess I should be pleased to live in a cooler, rainier climate than you — lucky me;-)

  2. deja, j’adore les ‘walking’ ils sont très ‘in’ cette saison chez nous.Le ruché est en effet très joli et apporte beaucoup de style à ce beau ‘walking’.

  3. I love not only the look of a walking coat, but the very idea. It speaks to a different age, one where people would leisurely take a constitutional in the nighttime air. And a gentleman would always have his walking stick.

  4. wendyb – I think the model is pretending to be The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.

materfamilias – yes, that’s what I love about a good jacket or coat. It really can pull everything together.

metscan – I like that one best as well, but unless I find something that really knocks my socks off, the cost-per-wearing for me would be too high.

LBR – around November, one of my trees will have some nice autumn leaves. You can wear the blue coat and come pose in front of it.

Orane – moi aussi, j’aime beaucoup le ruche.

Thomas – yes! it’s the romanticism of long walks through crisp autumn afternoon or evening air that draws me to this style. I love the image of a gentleman with a walking stick. And dogs, he must have dogs.

  5. My mother called these “fingertip length”. A graceful, versatile length and here in Toronto you have to cover your hips in winter or you suffer. (Of course the teens wear the waist-length puffers.)

  6. I love the blue. I seem to be attracted to this colour lately. I only wish we had the autumnal leaves in L.A. to walk around in. Think I am going to take a trip to Chicago this fall just so I can wear a coat.
