Another colorful character

This charming fellow and his friend Wyatt Earp were on their way up the hill to entertain the kids at ski school. Yes, that’s a real animal (wolverine? long dead, bien sur) on his head.

  1. Well I’m reading this post with a sigh of relief! For fear of offending you and your American readers I did not comment on the earlier posting of photos of Alpine chariacatures, but I was rather alarmed by them. I thought it rather sad that all that beautiful AMERICAN scenery should have to be parodied as historical European and especially ‘Alpineland’.

Now I see that it is possible to dip into local culture to enjoy the season.

So, Imogen, in answer to your question, yes you should!

  2. Imogen – he’s sort of a Disney-fied mountain man. But if you want an iconic Wild West style, this is one.

gp – it’s really an interesting vibe…the “village” and most of the building exteriors are very European/Alpine in feel. But once inside, the American West rules: deer antler chandeliers, huge stone fireplaces, Native American motifs and ubiquitous taxidermy. The overall theme is very American Southwest. The menus in most restaurants feature lots of wild game. It’s an odd but pleasing marriage of styles, sort of Fantasyland for the sophisticated set.

  3. Speaking of the American West, when some Illinois friends came to visit me a couple years ago, they said when they first saw some men at the airport in Denver wearing cowboy boots & hats, they thought it was an affectation, but later realized, no, that’s how they dress here in the west, where we have real cowboys.
