Behold the Behemoth!

Our new refrigeration unit. It’s a “smart” refrigerator. I think I’m going to call it “Hal.”

  1. How did you know I need a new refrigerator? My old Sub-Zero is leaking…what is this? Tell us how you like it, please. And yes, I have loved my bottom freezer.

  2. Nancy – good to hear. This is replacing an old side-by-side, that seemed to have far less space, even though it was only slightly smaller than this one.

Rita – Hal has all kinds of computerized temperature and humidity contols and sensors, and two cooling systems, one for the fridge, one for the freezer. It’s supposed to make the unit more energy-efficient.

  3. lagatta – no offense taken. We also have a twelve-year-old son who eats like a lumberjack, plus our daytime nanny and her girls who are at the house a lot and keep some food there.

Sal – it definitely dominates the kitchen!

LPC – this is a Samsung. Can you tell this fridge was selected by a man? DH did all of the online consumer product research, then went and picked it out. We got some rebates and store discounts which brought this baby in at about 30% off retail.

  4. Sher – our old one had definitely kicked the bucket. Actually, it had been teetering on the brink on life support for a couple of years before that. Once we hit the point where we’d shelled out more in repair bills that we’d paid for the darn thing to start with, I said “enough!”

WendyB – it’s a bit malevolent looking for sure!

  5. Oh so jealous! If they were making these when I built my house….til then I’ll just bide my time and wait for the one I have to kick the bucket. LOL!

  6. In Australia they call that a French door fridge (lord knows why) and I’ve been considering one for my new kitchen – great timing! Interesting that you find it better than the side by side, which I was also thinking about.

  7. Pseu: Big boy, wow!

lagatta, I thought the same thing when I bought a modest fridge 23 years ago. Now I have a second one in the basement. Two growing sons, their friends, lots of people over and a DH who cooks, cans, etc. But one day I will go back to one.

  8. Yes, pseu and duchesse, more people than I thought!

I was hoping not to come across as an environmentalist nut (though I am) – I’m sure the two “French doors” (meaning side by side doors that open out) will actually be an energy saver as you are releasing less cold at once.

It is just that in general I’m annoyed at the lack of availability of QUALITY smaller appliances in North America. The only fridge that actually meets my needs perfectly (about 10′ sq, separate freezer) is a Danby and those are not very good quality.

I’ve lived in Europe with fridges and freezers with all the different zones and energy-saving features, and no bigger than the little Danby. They don’t come cheap though.

Hopefully this will change with more people choosing to live in small but well designed dwellings for environmental reasons (being close to transport, walkable neighbourhoods).

  9. Better than my old black Amana that came with the house. The controls were lighted, down the center. The door fell off. I called it Darth Vader.

  10. Hal needs some “flare” perhaps? Or are you sticking with the minimalist brushed SST look? Either way, Hal is wicked awesome.

  11. Well, “Hal” has begun to be festooned with the usual collection of Stewie (from Family Guy) magnets and various pictures and notes. He’s looking a bit less malevolent.
