Life Altering Experience

Max Mara at ShopStyle

Tried on this coat just for the heck of it last weekend at the MaxMara store. Mon Dieu…The cut! The fabric! The contruction! Those sleeves! I feel as though I’ve had a glimpse into another world entirely, and I may never be the same again.

(Even mon mari, who is usually mostly indifferent to clothing and fashion in general thought it looked great on. It looks amazing without the belt, too. No, I didn’t buy it, nor am I seriously considering. If I lived in a cooler climate it would be an amazing investment piece, but here in LA opportunities to wear would be minimal.)

  1. Wow! You are a woman of resolve! Presumably, though, while you’ve left the coat on the rack, you’ve taken away some pointers about what to look for in more than just coats, and at some future point will pick up another garment that gives you the same life-altering experience but doesn’t make you alter your life in order to wear it.

  2. Those Max Mara coats are wonderful. Max Mara has a “plus” line, Marina Rinaldi, in scare quotes because it starts at about a US size 12. What is the fabric, a cachmere/lambswool blend?

Even in San Francisco, that jacket would be practical, but not in LA, and you are NOT going to buy it for your impending trip to Paris. If you do, it will be sunny and warm all the time, or conversely absolutely pouring rain.

  3. thoughtsinthecity – actually it looks amazing without the belt too. I couldn’t find a picture styled that way, but if I had this jacket that’s how I’d wear it.

  4. Max Mara coats are the best and they really hold up- I’ve had several. lagatta, in Europe Marina Rinaldi starts at 10!
    (A Marina Rinaldi 21).

    They do have good sales!

  5. Wow. that one really is awesome. I love the sleeves. If it wasn’t for the belt, I’d really go looking for it! But I usually don’t look to good in belted jackets.

  6. I like the coat too, also with the belt. Weather over here cools real quickly, so I too wouldn´t be able to wear it for a very long period. In Paris though, it would just be chic. No need to pack the sweaters. And you visit Paris every year, so buying this coat would be justified 😉

  7. D.P., I was already envisioning one of your beautiful scarfs with it! Let us know if it keeps calling you late at night 🙂

  8. Good for you, realizing that for where you live, this isn’t the piece for you to invest in right now. That said, now you know you like Max Mara on you, so something in a more LA climate-friendly fabric may pop up next spring.

  9. I don´t think you have to wait until next spring, Pseu. Even way out here, where I live, the Max Mara shop gets new stuff nonstop. My black skirt suit ( many years old, still very wearable ) is MM´s. I find their prices sensible.

  10. hm, I might look out for that one here, I’m thinkin about a second coat. will keep my eyes open for sure.
