Équipement du ski

New skis, how do I love thee?  Let me count the ways…

I mentioned in yesterday’s post that my first day out on the mountain had gone really well, despite adverse weather. Above is the reason why.

I’ve been skiing almost annually for 18 years now, and year after year had rented skis upon arrival (I did purchase my own boots after my second ski trip). After years of rental rates steadily increasing, it was starting to seem like a better idea to buy a pair, as we plan to continue to ski.  I asked for a recommendation, and was told that for the type of skiing I do, I might like the newish “rocker” technology, and so tried a “demo” pair of the above skis.

Mon Dieu!!! The first few turns were a revelation. Turning itself was almost effortless, the skis felt much better balanced and provided greater control, and I was skiing better on my first day than I usually do toward the end of the week. I can’t begin to describe what these have done for my confidence, even on the steeper runs. I was sold after the first hour, but le monsieur wanted me to give them a full two days’ try. The more I skied, the better I liked them. So as of this morning, une femme has her very own pair of skis.

We didn’t go out today, as the HIGH temperature was -2F/-18C. After skiing in 2F weather yesterday, we’d had enough of the extreme cold. It’s not bad once you’re moving, but sitting on the lift can be brutal. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be warmer (high teens F) so I plan to get out there and tear up the mountain for our last two ski days.

  1. Sounds like you’re having a wonderful time in spite of the cold. Tomorrow should be close to perfect, especially with your new skis! Enjoy the rest of your week.

  2. Good to have your own skis, especially the newer style. And good that you’re staying in today, it’s just too cold. Time for the retail reconnaissance you mentioned a few days ago.

  3. You are so brave… I never, ever, ever was brave enough to ski. Of course, I did try water skiing (in the South of France), but it was a bit warmer… and I was certainly much younger!

But your équipement is very cool! (And surely that will help the skiing itself, non?)

    Hope it’s fun!

  4. Isn’t it amazing how skis changed to the better? It is so much more fun and almost effortless! … only as long as no rowdies are on the slope. In Austria every month people die on the slope because of the enormous speed. People used to ski slower with the old equipment. How are you going to transport the skis home? Did you fly to the ressort or come by car?

  5. Good for you, investing in equipment that increases your skiing pleasure.

I’ve always loved nordic skiing myself, and these days, I like snowshoeing. I tried downhill skiing one time, but couldn’t get the hang of getting onto the lift chair while on skis. Perhaps if the skis themselves were easier to control…

  6. Well done! And you have experienced cold weather too.
It is interesting to read that you are enjoying skiing. It might sound odd coming from a Scandinavian, but I have never liked skiing or winter sports of any kind. I admire those who do: )

  7. I love hearing about your ski adventures. Although it’s just one trip per year, it’s quite the trip. You absolutely deserve your own pair of skis, and very cool ones at that. (Maybe this will get you up to Big Bear or Mammoth from time to time??)

  8. Thanks everyone! The skiing on Thursday and Friday was just a delight. Because we only go for one week each year, I’d hesitated before now to invest in a pair of skis. But on the other hand, because we only go for one week each year, I want to make the most of it, and these skis really allow me to do that. I was able to handle the more difficult (for me) runs with ease, and ski longer without tiring. My enjoyment factor was up about 300%. I’m already looking forward to next year!
