Working It Out

Still paying homage to WendyB

Even with le monsieur snapping the photo, we still can’t seem to get our camera’s auto focus to work in conjunction with the flash…

Yesterday was the maiden voyage for the ensemble above.  It was definitely an experiment, but I’m pleased with the outcome and feel it hits the Style Sweet Spot.  It’s serious enough for work, but playful enough for me.

Jacket and skirt: Eileen Fisher here and here.
Tee: Talbots.  (Doesn’t seem to be available online any more.) Grey and peach still available and on sale here.
Tights: Spanx
Boots: “One Step” brand, purchased in Paris in 2008.
Earrings: Vintage from Beladora2 gold fleur-de-lis. (Lots more fabulous gold earrings here.)

The necklaces are Talbots and Ralph Lauren (both years old) but I ultimately removed them and wore this bracelet instead.  If it hadn’t been raining, I might have added a small silk square scarf.

Yes, the hair is shorter.  Jean Seberg short.  Actually we went a little too short over the ears, but it will grow.  I love the rest of the cut, and my daily styling time is down to about 30 seconds.

  1. Love the outfit! I have been pining for that skirt forever. I have tried it on multiple times, but alas I have a big butt that sticks out in the back and I am not sure that it looks good on me. I would hate to spend that much on something that really didn’t look good. Wish you lived here to give me a true opinion. Those ladie in the store just want to sell. I love Eileen Fisher. Thanks again for your wonderful blog.

  2. Great outfit! So love the black stockings and the booties. (Oh for longer legs so I could pull that off!)

And love, love, love Eileen Fisher. (When she goes on sale at Bloomies, I flit through the petites department and snap her up!)

  3. Fantastic outfit. The booties and the shorter haircut just make it. I think the shorter do really works for you!

  4. I love your new look! Your short hair is tres chic and the 30 seconds it takes to style it has got to be a relief from the bob. I love Eileen Fisher since they have been cutting the styles to fit and flatter.

  5. Perfect – so cute and fun looking – whole look including hair seems just right for you. You’re an inspiration for me to get busy with my wardrobe.

  6. You look utterly fantastic–love the cut on you, and your legs look a mile long. Incidentally, I’m growing out a pixie after 5 years and am wallowing in the mullet stage.

  7. Very nice!

    I love the hair cut.

I thought about ordering that jacket.

I did order the skirt, but like Julianne wonder if it will look good given the butt situation. We’ll see.

This photo convinces me that you’re pretty slim.

  8. Rita – thanks so much! Those boots are favorites of mine (quite comfortable actually).

Julianne – thank you. I have a big butt. The skirt hugs the curves. But I think it flatters. I channel my inner Joan Holloway and go for it. Or, wear a longer jacket as I’ve done here. 😉

    pavlova – mille mercis!

Duchesse – thank you! Kept the color the same, as I think this color is working well for me.

    Sal – awww, thanks!!

Big Little Wolf – thank you. I’m quite short actually. The black tights with black boots lengthen the legs, I think. I’m an EF convert. The pieces are so practical, and many are quite flattering.

cbroome – I’m honored to have prompted a delurk. Thank you so much!

Toby Wollin – thanks, I agree. Love this marinière trend!

    Luxe Bytes – thanks!

materfamilias – thanks so much! The great thing about this skirt is that you can adjust the length as desired.

Jane W – thanks very much! Yes, the growing out is a bear.

    coffeeaddict – mille mercis!

  9. SarahN – thanks so much!

Jana – thank you! This outfit just felt so “right.”

hostess – thank you. I feel most “myself” in a pixie cut.

laurieann – thanks very much. I love having short hair again.

Susan Tiner – Thank you! I think you’ll like the skirt. The jacket is great too. Both are very flattering on.

Style Odyssey – thanks! Seeing your pic the other day inspired me to try this top with a skirt. Glad it’s still available in stores; it’s such a great top.

    Golla – merci beaucoup!

WendyB – thanks! My hair guy is going to be all “I told you so!!”

Miss Cavendish – thanks so much!

Kathy – thank you! The short cut looks great on you too. I sure love the ease of it. I was very anti-EF for a long time, but lately she’s been doing great pieces with a very Parisian vibe.

metscan – thank you so much!

    Miss Janey – thank you!

  10. Love your haircut! Can we see a close-up? Your whole look works, and it shows in your smile.

  11. Whatever possessed you Pseu, to change your other blog format–I was so happy with it. You could see the topic and whether you wanted to read it, it was chronological. I loved it. Can’t you go back, pretty please.
I’d sign my name, but I forgot my google password. I read you every day.

  12. The first thing I noticed was the hair – tres chic! You look fantastic – hair, outfit, everything. And I know we’re not supposed to say these things, but you are looking incredibly slim!

  13. Couture Allure – thanks so much! I’ll try to get a pic in good light over the weekend.

Tiffany – thanks! You have a chic cut too. I think this pose is slimming, and that’s why it’s become so popular.

    SewingLibrarian – thanks very much!

    Leslie – thanks, I’m flattered.

Rubiatonta – muchas gracias! I’m really glad I bit the bullet and went for the shorter cut.

L’age Moyen – thank you very much!

Terri – thanks, this ensemble is VERY comfortable. The wall is one of my favorite features of our house. It’s a wall that divides the kitchen from the living/dining room, and is lath/plaster. Our house was built in 1941 as a “starter home” probably for workers at the nearby Hughes Aircraft facility. They just don’t build ’em like this anymore!

    C – mille mercis!

LPC – you are too kind. Thank you very much!

    Susan – thank you!

  14. Anonymous – I did change the background and some of the graphics, but the basic format is still the same. Are you viewing in a reader? When you say you can’t see the topic, are you talking about the blog title?

Sisty – thanks so much! I like wearing skirts when I can wear with tights, not as much in the summer. My legs are so pale and I abhor pantyhose. ;-p I’ll have to work on my self-consciousness there.

Anonymous – oh good, glad you can see the content you’re looking for!

  15. Wow! You look great in both this picture and the picture on Already Pretty, let me say that at the outset. But, looking at them side-by-side, it’s obvious to me that you were born to wear skirts. I learned a very valuable lesson from looking at your pics.

  16. You look FAB.. love the outfit and LOVE the new hair too – I’ve gone shorter too – something in the air maybe?!! from, Semi-Expat XX

  17. You look so great! I am wary equating looking good with looking young, so I will say that your look has all the qualities that tend to make young people look great: it’s lively, vibrant, happy, and you seem to be completely happy wearing it. Love love love the short boots, by the way. Would you try this with the leopard prints?

  18. You look fantastic. I LOVE the hair.
i love the booties with the tights. I generally can’t wear tights or pantyhose – they drive me crazy – but I’ve lately been wearing long socks or thigh-high stockings. The only problem with these is if I have to walk a long way somewhere – they slip down.

Long socks work well with long skirts, but with short skirts what else can you do other than tights?

Are Spanx tights comfortable? How are they sized?

  19. I saw the pic first and thought, “Did she go really short? It looks amazing!”

And of course you did. Love the cut and though it’s none of my beeswax I do prefer when your color is darker vs lighter, as it is here.

The outfit looks great — very chic and powerful, but with plenty of personality.

I know it can be controversial to say a shorter person looks “tall” in an outfit, as if looking tall is the holy grail etc etc. But dammit, you look lean and leggy I’m not afraid to say so!

BTW, thanks for satisfying my curiosity that you felt great in last week’s WIO ensemble….now I’m dying to know if your new looks are going to get a response at the office!

  20. Dorothea – thanks so much! I’d probably hesitate to put the leopard boots with this particular ensemble, as I’d be afraid they’d fight with the striped top. However, with a different ensemble, perhaps.

    Rosa – thank you!

    SheilaLouise -thanks so much!

Aunt Snow – thank you! I find that tights in general are much more comfortable than pantyhose. The Spanx tights run pretty true to the sizing on the back of the package. I like them because they are truly opaque and because they don’t have a stiff waistband that digs in. Donna Karan tights are also good, and less expensive.

Style Crone – thank you very much!

Vix – thanks! I like the darker color too, and feel as though it allows me to wear darker clothing without my head disappearing. I’m very OK with looking taller, thank you. 🙂 at 5’1″, I’ll take all of the illusion of height I can get. There are only a couple people at work who will notice/comment on what I’m wearing, but I did get a lot of positive feedback on the new haircut.
