Room With A View

(Empty) pool view from our room at the Venetian. All photos taken with iPhone. I packed the point-and-click camera but was too lazy to pull it out.

We’re meeting an old and dear friend for brunch in a couple of hours, then heading home. I’ve never been a “Vegas person.” But le monsieur is, or was, more back in the days of cheap lobster buffets, $5 blackjack tables and such. No high rollers here. I’ve learned to enjoy bits of it. But every couple of years we succumb to the low season deals and come over for two days of total unreality. There is a lot of Over The Top Pretty:

More pretty holiday decorating at the Wynn
The conservatory at the Bellagio always does some spectacular seasonal displays with flowers and plants.

I still say it looks like a gigantic blow dryer. (Actually a bar/restaurant inside.)  City Center Mall.

More City Center Mall, tubes filled with water, whirlpools and colored lights.

I snapped this one for Style Crone, fantastical hat store in the Venetian shops.

I usually enjoy Las Vegas for about the first 24 hours or so. I can allow myself to be immersed in the other-worldliness of some of it, the great shopping (even the “mall stores” here seem to be better stocked with colors and sizes than at home), and and we often have some really great meals. But soon, the excess, the ersatz, the carbon footprint the size of Siberia starts to wear on me, and then I’m ready to go home. Le monsieur and I have also come to recognize that we just can’t eat and drink the way we used to, so a lot of what people come to Las Vegas for is lost on us.

Our idea of Wretched Excess

À bientot! Hope your weekend was/is a good one.

  1. We used to go to Vegas relatively often because it was about as far as I was comfortable going when my children were tiny. But I have found that the “sensory overload” of Vegas is not restful for me. I need more quiet and peace to refresh. I suppose Vegas’ excess would appeal at certain times, but for now I really just need more rest! LOL

  2. What a fun getaway! I can relate to not being able to eat and drink as much as you used to.

I have mixed feelings about Vegas. I grew up there from the age of 5 until 17. The city has changed so much since then, it hardly looks like the place I was raised.

When I visit every three or four years, I feel a combination of nostalgia – bordering on sadness – for what Vegas once was and no longer is and excitement for what it is today. There is always something new and flashy to see and experience in Vegas and that’s what keeps me and my husband going back.

The last time I was there, the City Centre was about to open. It’s looks like a metropolis from the outside and from your photos, I can see that it’s quite modern.

I also haven’t seen the inside of Wynn Hotel. Next time we go, we want to stay there. The Venetian is one of my favorite hotel/casinos. It’s really a beautiful place. Good choice. Did you indulge in a gondola ride?

  3. Getting away and having fun is so healthy. I think every married couple needs to do this once a year.
    Those bears look adorable!
Window shopping on vacation is something I enjoy even if I do not buy anything, it’s just fun to look.
Our weekend is packed with shopping, domestics and we are hosting a family dinner….which I must get started on now!

  4. If you enjoyed the trip for 24 hours, it was a worthy trip.
A small brake from all you´ve had the last few months, the Holidays coming next!
Btw, the polar bear on his back, feet up, is cute :)!

  5. Disneyland for grown ups? I’d love to go, even though I can only tolerate small doses (like you).

Didn’t you buy Chanel shoes on your last visit?

  6. How fun – my family and I once escaped to Vegas for a Christmas holiday several years ago – the city was entering it’s “family-friendly vacation” era and even with all the deals we’d arranged it cost a small fortune to keep everyone in our group entertained! Every ten years or so I’ve visited with family or friends since the early 60s and am always amazed at the changes and growth each visit – just when you think it can’t get more sparkly the city trumps itself. Reno and South Lake Tahoe are getting that way too, regretfully. Yes, 24-hours is about all I can take there anymore, but that 24-hours is packed with excess in everything which can be an interesting change of pace. Great pictures –

  7. You missed the LeSportSac Outlet! That’s something that as far as I can tell, is unique to Vegas.

I like to go there because it’s 1) a popular spot for IT conventions so husband gets a free ride, and 2)a good departure spot for the awesome sights of the Southwest. I’ve got my sights set on the Tillerman bridge next.

  8. IT DOES LOOK LIKE A BIG BLOW DRYER!! I like the bears..they are so cute! I think getting out is so important…but I am like you, I tire easily of Las Vegas. Once I watched a man lose all of his money and a plane ticket at a table…it made me feel so sad. But for a little while all the glitz is fun to take in.

  9. Thank you for thinking of me! Love the hats; it makes me think I should travel to Las Vegas just to check them out. I haven’t been there since the 60’s, so I’m sure it’s very different. Your photos are very festive!

  10. I get exhausted just thinking of Las Vegas. Unfortunately, my husband enjoys it for about 24 hours, so we have gone a few times. The polar bears are so cute though.

  11. Aha, so that’s where you went! Vegas not my destination of choice either but a son speculates about a wedding there, and if it puts me on the road to a grandchild, I’ll go anywhere.
