In The Ballpark…

Work Outing At Baseball Game

It’s that time of year again, and this afternoon I’ll be attending a work function at baseball game with my boss’ boss and the executive team. These types of work events always seem to flummox me when it comes to attire. (I rarely am called upon to attend any business social functions outside the office.) The guys just wear their usual chinos-button-shirt-and-loafers Business Casual uniform; my own BC ensembles don’t feel right for a baseball stadium. I came up with a version of this ensemble a couple of years ago, and will probably go with it again today.

Do you have to attend outside functions as part of your job that require different attire than what you’d normally wear to work? How do you plan for it?

  1. This is always so tricky. The “tall” women always seemed to do this more easily! (But a great pair of skinny pants and a versatile top with a jacket – and a change of shoes (heels or not) tucked in a bag usually works!)

    Hope you have fun!

  2. Great choice but I would probably rethink the sneakers and go with a low strappy sandal or a kitten slingback. Nuts4dogs

  3. I always plan for the effect I want to make with my company first, take the weather conditions into account and scale my choices to the venue.
    This outfit looks terrific !!

But for me…I would need a small brimmed Fedora to prevent squinting and protect my face from the sun.
There’s something jaunty about the new smallish Fedoras that add pIzazz and a touch of contemporary fun. It would also be terrific with the shoes you chose.
    Have fun!

  4. You’ve nailed the look here.
I’d also add a bright red patterned scarf.

We have staff parties where we dress up and professional development days where casual attire is acceptable so no real challenging dressing events in my line of work.
    Enjoy the game!

  5. At the minimum, doesn’t one have to wear the home team’s colors??? Are you watching Cliff Lee vs. Clayton Kershaw? I’m asssuming you’re in Chavez Ravine and rooting for the Dodgers with that ensemble on.

FWIW, that would be WAY too much clothing if you were attending the game here in Philly, where the heat index is 105. I’d go with a pair of white linen slacks and a red tee with red sandals, but then again I’m a Phils fan. 😉

  6. I am sort of retired, but go to Houston Astros games once a year with my husband. He hosts clients in the skybox, which is air-conditioned! Lucky, since it’s always miserably hot here. I wear a casual skirt or lightweight pants with a cute top. A jacket would be overkill. Even at football games, we don’t wear jackets!

I remember going to an office picnic several years ago, in Spring. Most people wore jeans or shorts with t-shirts or polo shirts; but I clearly remember the French/Algerian project secretary, Faye (it was an international project). She showed up in a summery dress and a straw hat. I was so impressed! She did look a bit out of place, but trés chic!

  7. Are you all excited to attend the baseball game?
Your clothes seem to be; ).
The Lonchamp bag is a good choice. I wish your hotdog is a soya hotdog, tastes ok, imo.

  8. This is a tough one…in Texas if you wear that jacket to a baseball game you will be soaked in sweat. I really have no idea what I would wear if it was a work function…maybe a denim skirt with a nice top…I will have to think on this one.

  9. I’m invited to a lot of work/social events and because I do not attend, I’m not a “big wig.” I agree with Pam, the jacket wouldn’t fly in the American midwest either, but I don’t know what the solution is.

  10. Yes, in California, I’d wear something very similar to what you show you here. If it was a hot day, which in San Francisco is rare, I’d probably wear a black skirt and sandals and a tee.

  11. On days like this I would love to be in your shoes. No ballparks around here, no such events. I envy the opportunity, especially the hotdog. mjamm!
