Red Shoes of Luck and Happiness

Les chaussures sans douleurs

These shoes (above) are the pair I’m wearing in Wednesday’s post. A pair of red pumps was one of those wardrobe items I can’t ever remember not wanting, but never quite ran across the right pair. Comfort is non-negotiable for me; I will no longer tolerate painful or even mildly uncomfortable shoes. But I also wanted a pair with verve. I mean, if you’re going for red pumps you want a bit of that Sohpia Loren attitude!

A few weeks ago I stopped into Cole Haan to look at the brogues, but these little flirts had other plans for me. They were seductive to look at, yes, but then I tried them on and wow! Super comfortable. The heel isn’t tremendously high to begin with, but the platform reduces the pitch of the shoe a bit further. (They look higher than they feel.) The sole is quite padded and cushioned, being made with Nike Air® technology. The interior is leather-lined too. There was no resisting their charms. I think we’ll be very happy together.

Yes, they’re pricey. Not Manolo pricey, but nothing to sneeze at. While I find that Cole Haan products generally deliver excellent value for the money, there are similar options available at a lower price. Here’s one example:

Fitzwell from Zappos
(Red on sale!)

I haven’t tried these myself, but have a pair of Fitzwell leopard pumps that are exceptionally comfortable.

Do you have any Ruby Slippers in your shoe wardrobe?  What do you wear them with?

More options below, in a variety of colors if red isn’t your thing…

  1. Fabulous! Cole Haan makes wonderful pumps – thanks for the link to this one, ’cause there are some great color choices in addition to lucky red.

  2. Red shoes have made me happy as long as I can remember; I bought my first pair (butter-soft red kid Capezio flats) in high school. The red footwear in my closet currently: red Wellington boots (Valentine gift from my husband;) skinny-strapped high-heeled Italian sandals–super comfortable, would be great for salsa dancing if I did that; and beautiful red suede t-strap heels by Adrienne Vittadini, also remarkably comfortable.

  4. Red is definitely my thing when it comes to footwear. I generally wear dark coloured jeans, boots and jackets but I have four pairs of red shoes. My paws are the only part of me that I’m comfortable flashing colour on. I don’t have any with sequins – but I’m not ruling it out. I will check out your shoes when I’m on your side of the pond in a few weeks.

  5. I’ve been keeping an eye out for red pumps for a while — had a pair a few years ago, but the ouch factor meant they landed on my daughter’s feet instead. I’ll try to find a pair of the Cole Haans to try on — they look perfect!

  6. The shoes are gorgeous…I have a pair of red pumps…and I think you have inspired me to wear them more often! I do not know why I don’t…thanks!

  7. My very first heels were red with black lacing along the side – but (sigh) my heels days are over, I’m afraid. I can only stand them for about an hour, even low ones.

  8. No red shoes, but I did buy a small red cross body bag for a little pizzaz. I use it when I don’t need to carry my whole life with me. I did want the red Acne pistol boots, but they sold out quickly, and I was lingering.

  9. I love my red Kenneth Cole Reaction pumps, and I wear them with everything from skirts and dresses to jeans. Their casual design elements of the pair I have make them more versatile for me, and you’re right, comfort is primary!

  10. I loved these shoes in your last post! but, then I just love shoes. Alas, all of my heels have been put away for hopefully another day.
    Have a great weekend!

  11. I used to have some lovely red pumps with peek-a-boo toes (in my younger days). I just never wear pumps anymore, but I have some red sandals. Come to think of it, some bright colored shoes for winter would not go amiss. Maybe it’s time to shop!

  12. No red shoes because that’s an area I don’t want to draw attention to but I carry a red purse every day. I bought it after leaving my black purse behind on a plane – the red is much easier to spot!

  13. I´m happy you found a pair of pumps you like. Comfort is a must for me too.
Red shoes? No, I don´t think I´ve ever had a pair and don´t think, that I ever will.
    Ok on others though.

  14. I love red shoes. As an introvert, I love being a little “out there” with what I wear and these would be marvelous.

  15. Red pumps look great on you. I bought a pair of red shoes a few years back – wedges with a peep toe – and I wore them exactly once. I shy away from red which must say something about my personality but I am not sure what. Chicken? Reluctant to take risks? Or maybe I just don’t really like red that much.

I like that you make comfort your first priority. I don’t know how some women wear these nutty heels! Their feet must look horrible from all the blisters and callouses and whatnot.

  16. Red pumps. What’s not to love about this?

And oh how I still find Sophia to be one of the most luscious, sexy, womanly screen icons around. (Why did the media universe cease to consider this sort of female form anything other than glorious?)

  17. Love the red pumps, and you look great in them. Unfortunately I am not comfortable enough in my own skin to pull it off, although I wish I could, love those shoes!

  18. Oh yes, I have ruby slippers, and not only that, they are Hush Puppies brand, ultra comfortable with a mid-high heel – my faves! I wear them with EVERYTHING. I love these red shoes you bought. May you wear them with a kick in your step, you saucy woman!
