Show Your Stripes

My love for all things marinière continues unabated. I even have a pinboard dedicated to this iconic style.

The fashion world too seems to be currently enthralled by the striped shirt, judging from the multitude of options available.

Saint James

The Saint James Galathée Tee remains my perennial favorite. But one needn’t be a purist. There are marinière-style shirts available right now in a wide range of styles and prices (and colors too). I think navy-stripes-on-white, while a classic combo, still looks fresh for Spring.

J.Crew

Here’s a short-sleeved, v-neck version in linen jersey from J.Crew.

Old Navy

This long-sleeve version from Old Navy hits three trends at once: dropped shoulder, stripes and black-and-white. At $10, not a huge investment either.

Land’s End

Land’s End has several options, including this classic version above, now on sale for $19.99 (size L only).

If you’re wary of horizontal stripes, try wearing underneath an open cardigan or blazer, and opt for narrow, evenly spaced stripes.

  1. I do, I’d wear all these tops (not at once)! I own the Lands End and a couple of Old Navy versions, and I do love the classic J Crew you’ve shown. These are my go-to tees for any day.

  2. The vintage photos you have posted show what a classic this t-shirt design really is. i have a similar J Crew style from about two years ago (my only J Crew clothing item ever) .

  3. Thank you! I had a great Target stripey that finally died. I just splurged on the Commes des Garcons version with the goofy heart character, but I need a short-sleeved too. I plan to wear it with, as you suggest, a navy blazer.

  4. Bonjour! I bet you had fun researching this post. To this day, the story I wrote on la Marinière last year remains a favorite of mine. Nothing like a fun, fresh-looking, yet classic marinière to cheer one up at the end of a long winter… Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

  5. Boden has some pretty good striped shirts and I have one from J. Crew from last year, colorblocked, that I love. I like to wear them with some sort of wildly patterned scarf that doesn’t really match. Thank you so much for joining us for the “How I Wear My: Everyday Bag” post today. I used both pictures and I love both bags you showed, but I am especially sweet on that Chanel tote of yours! XO, Jill

  6. I love stripes too. But I just wanted to say that I have the short-sleeve v-neck J Crew tee, and I would not recommend it. It does not wash up that well. The v-neck seam needs to be ironed each time. Lately, I am very hesitant to purchase J Crew because the quality does not match the price.

    1. The St James shirt is not made by J. Crew, they are just selling it. My family have bought them for 20+ years, quality is very good. I agree with you about JC quality being spotty, but St James isn’t their product.

  7. Nothing says “At last, spring!” like stripes and there is a scale right for every women, even those with definite busts. I find stripes more pleasing than most prints; usually tire of a print way before a stripe.

I wear mine with wide-legged cropped jeans, denim pencil skirt, black or navy matte jersey pants or grey linen wide-leg floods (Flax).

Too funny, PdesP willfeature marinières soon.

  8. Actually, my favorite look here is the Old Navy version!! If I ever drop the pounds I want to drop, then I can return to horitzontal stripes…right now, not so flattering. But I can see why you like the look!!

  9. I like a striped top, I have them in black&white and one in navy&white. I prefer the narrower stripe and I usually wear them under a jacket.

  10. I love a classic striped shirt! I have a long hemmed black/white one from H&M and a shorter blue/white with sequins from J. Crew. They’re both 3/4 sleeves, now that I think about it, so I’m justified in buying a new one with long sleeves, right? 🙂

Sometimes I think I wear mine too much, but ce n’est pas possible 🙂

  11. I associate stripes with nautical lifestyle. Stripes, dots and stars are great for children.
I´m boring, but I prefer solids or maybe something with a very surprising print.

  12. I like stripes, but I find them unflattering on me. While I am not overweight, I think they look best on flatter chested woman than myself. Don’t like to look like I am wearing a measuring tape around my largest part. :))

  13. I love wearing stripes and have several. My gray with white stripes just got a hole, but I still have cream with navy stripes and black with white stripes. I can never decide if I like the more colourful ones like red with white stripes.

  14. Thank you for posting all the great striped top options. I saw a lot of stripes in the shops in Paris. They are still current and really, never go out of style.
Thank you also for participating in my and Jill’s How I Wear My: Everyday Handbag post over at Jill’s blog. I love both the bags you featured, especially that fantastic Chanel bag!

  15. Stripes are always so fresh! Being little and busty, I can’t do horizontal stripes, but vertical? Love them!

  16. Where do I start? I guess Paris is the best place – certainly for this blog! I bought a classic navy and white striped top in Monoprix (where else!)when I was in Paris for my 65th birthday. On my actual birthday I wore a white and navy striped dress (linea), which has a red belt, and a white jacket over the top.

I also have a green and navy striped top (Banana Republic), a navy and red striped top (Sfera), a pale yellow/green/blue striped top (Aldi) and a pale yellow and white striped short-sleeved top from Lands End. At the moment I am wearing most of these with jeans, but once the weather gets warmer I will wear the short-sleeved top with cropped trousers and most if not all of the long-sleeved tops will be put away until it gets cooler.

You may have guessed from this that I am strangely attracted to stripes! As I am petite the striped tops all have narrow stripes. My husband insists on calling horizontal stripes “hoops” by the way!

  17. The only thing I like a la mariniere are moules LOL!
Honestly, I do love the look and all of your examples are gorgeous but I’m very buxom and horizontal stripes make me look boxy and thick. I happily do vertical stripes and have a new summer teal and white striped top waiting for the warmer weather.

  18. I just bought one from JCrew – strips with a little red anchor. LOVE it. I really love the elbow length sleeves, they are so flattering.

  19. I’m a bona fide fat girl and I still rejoice in my collection of Bretons, although I’m quite tall and always make sure the fit is just right. Of course it helps that I live just a few feet from the sea, so the nautical look is never really out of style. I usually deploy a trim striped top with wide cut trouser or pair of dark jeans and one of my beloved Hermes kerchief-style in my hair. Add espadrilles and a sparkly pair of vintage earrings and you’ve got my “polished casual” uniform for most of the cooler months.

  20. I too suffer from nautical stripe addiction. And I have no plans on stopping. That first photo of Jean Seberg made me cut my hair into a similar style in the early 90s during the short boyish Linda Evangelista hair craze. Problem is, I don’t have Seberg’s or Evangelista’s features, so I looked really goofy for a while.

  21. I love ’em! Horizontal stripes that is. They are great for my pear shape, especially if I can tuck the stripes in and get them off my middle–one of my widest parts. Suddenly, they are all the rage, aren’t they?
