The Third Piece

jeans, leopard shoes
(Cue the zither music…)

Never underestimate the power of a good Third Piece (jacket, sweater, vest, scarf). They’re the alchemists in your wardrobe that turn basic separates into Outfits™. Recent finds such as my knit jacket with leather sleeves and this cardigan from Eileen Fisher are making my mornings much easier. With a little bit of structure and shaping, this long cardigan is perfect for casual-but-pulled-together looks, but also dresses up a bit in a pinch (which makes it a contender for the travel wardrobe).

Also, don’t underestimate the power of the right accessories. These shoes definitely punch above their weight.

  1. This is an absolutely adorable outfit and I WANT it!! The shoes really give it that cute-sexy flair and the jeans and white cardi keep it casual. Brava.

  2. Ah, you cue in the *best* music and videos, Une Femme. Love this topper and I can see it easily going across the pond. Fab shoes too, bien sur.

  3. It looks like a cozy third piece too.
My eye wandered to the pretty blooms in your garden and I cannot help but notice the sunshine.
It looks like a great day to be wearing that outfit. I really must try on a pair of those NYD jeans. I see them in lots of shops in all styles and colours and never really saw them looking as goog on as they do on you.
    Have a super day Susan!

  4. I know that you are a petite person and your cardigan is very flattering. Sometimes, the longer open cardigans can swallow you up. Not this version! Lovely.

  5. I love your look! The leopards give such a chic accent! Your cardigan is a lovely and useful piece, I’ve only recently gone back to wearing a longer line this year, it feels right again.

  6. This is a great look on you, I especially like the sweater. I am on the hunt for a white blazer but maybe I should consider a sweater like yours instead. XO, Jill

  7. Great look!! If I had the money, I would purchase the EF topper right now! I love it….you may be my inspiration to attempt my version of this soon. It works for so many reasons…with or with the music!! 🙂

  8. I really like that cardigan. I had one very similar in shape to it from Ann Taylor Loft, but alas, it experienced a dryer mishap over the weekend and would now fit a 10 year old.

  9. Aren’t those Eileen Fisher cardigans the best? Ever since I splurged on my first one six or so years ago, I have become a devoted fan. And that first one??? Still in service and looking great. I like the leopard print pumps on you.

  10. The shoes are absolutely “you” and love them. The very lovely sweater would stay at home when I pack, though- white is too vulnerable for travel unless I have lodging that includes washing machine. Well, even then for me- I’m prone to spills and attracting the dirt of public places.

  11. Love your blog and have learned a great deal from it, especially your more philosophical posts. Clothing posts are interesting although a little harder to connect to as I don’t wear much black. I love the tee you’re wearing here, wish it and other EF pieces came in more colours…I can’t really consider shades of black/grey as “multiple colors” 🙂

  12. You look wonderful. I noticed the sweater in the photos of your anniversary weekend and thought then that it was great on you.

  13. I love this outfit on your, you look fanatastic! I have recently dropped a size in clothes, which has meant that Ihave had to go shopping for new pants in particular. I live i Aus, so winter is just around the corner, nothing fitted. I have just purchased 1 dark denim and 1 black pair if NYDjeans. I’ve never tried them before, they are very comfortable on.
Now you have given me food for thought with those shoes too:)

  14. I like the idea of the white cardigan. I used to always have a white sweater in the summer. Could you wash it in a handbasin? I often do that. I take some Forever New with me when I travel. Your wonderful shoes could go with everything.

  15. Thanks, everyone!

I’ll be making some final cut decisions in the next few days on the travel wardrobe. I’m still weighing the desire to bring some lighter colored pieces with the practicality of same.

  16. I hadn’t heard of the ‘Third Piece’ before, but now that I think of it, I live by them. The cardigan has a great shape and the shoes finish off your outfit with pizzaz.

  17. Perfect shoes, especially to go with the background music, I can just see them dancing to the tune. You most definitely know how to add the ‘third’ piece. I love this cardigan, what a great versatile piece it will be.

  18. BEAUTIFUL sweater … so much structure for a cardigan!

There’s an app for my Kindle Fire that plays “Old Time Radio” dramas. One is the Third Man series with Orson Wells as a resurrected Harry Lime. Knew the film, but I’d never heard of the weekly radio adventure. I often listen to them in the car when I’m to-and-froing. Lots of Anton Karas music, all playing with the original theme. Fun!
